Football Class 2A Final Playoff Projections

Latest RPI Rankigns: http://chsaanow.com/rpi/football/ .  With only one game today and the latest RPI being released this morning we can put are final Playoff Projections out.  Of course the Top 16 teams get in but a seeding committee will seed the tournament.  What I am going to do is follow the seeding rules and try and seed the 2A field.

Playoffs (Straight from Chsaanow.com): The Top 16 teams in the Classification based on the final RPI rankings will be placed into the post-season bracket.  If a conference champion is not ranked in the Top 16 based on RPI rankings, they will replace the lowest ranked team that is not a conference champion in the Top 16.

Seeding Criteria (once qualifiers are determined)

  • The following criteria will be taken into consideration when seeding bracket, in no particular order: geography, RPI, common opponents, strength of schedule, and head to head competition
  • A conference champion in the Top-10 of the seeded playoff bracket will host a first round game, unless they are playing another league champion. Once seeded, the seeds of the team will not change regardless of who hosts the game.
  • A conference champion not ranked in the top 10 of the seeded playoff bracket will be placed in the bracket but will not host a first round game.
  • A conference champion not ranked in the Top 16 of the final RPI rankings will be placed in the bracket, but will not be guaranteed a top 10 seed and will not be guaranteed to host a first round game.
  • Conference opponents will not be paired against one another in the first round.
  • Geography will be consideration in the first round

Seeding Procedure

  • Conference champions that are ranked in the top 16 of the RPI rankings are placed on the board for consideration.
  • The seeding committee will determine the #1 overall seed and place that team on the bracket. The #2 team for the same conference as the #1 overall seed will then be placed on the board for consideration.  The seeding committee will then determine the #2 overall seed and place that team on the bracket.  The #2 team from the same conference s the #2 overall seed will then be placed on the board for consideration.  This process followed until all 16 teams are seeded.

First Round Matchups (Seeding Rules) (League Finish Order at the Bottom)

#1 Bayfield vs 16. Aspen

#8 Faith Christian vs #9 Basalt

#4 Platte Valley vs #13 D’Evelyn

#5 Salida vs #12 Delta

#3 La Junta vs #14 Montezuma-Cortez

#6 Rifle vs #11 Eaton

#7 Kent Denver vs #10 Berthoud

#2 Resurrection Christian vs #15 Alamosa

Note: Seeding the top 8 was pretty easy.  Bayfield and Resurrection Christian are #1 and #2 in the RPI and seeded accordingly.  I have La Junta at #3 due to Basalt not being able to be placed until Rifle is seeded.  Now the question is Salida or Platte Valley at #4.  Platte Valley played a very tough non-league schedule and Salida did not play as hard so I am going with Platte Valley because of their Non-League schedule and winning a league title.  Rifle comes in at #7 due to winning the Western Slope League.  Kent Denver is placed higher than Faith Christian due to their head to head match up with Kent Denver winning.  Now the bottom 8 of the bracket was much harder to seed.  Basalt was the obvious choice at #9 with the #3 RPI.  Things now get much more complicated.  I went Berthoud at #10 ahead of Eaton due to finishing higher in league.  Eaton would then be seeded next going to Rifle to avoid the Delta vs Rifle league match up.  I went Delta at Salida for geography purposes and Delta finishing higher in League than Aspen.  D’Evelyn makes the most sense at Platte Valley for geography purposes and higher RPI than Alamosa and Montezuma-Cortez.  I then placed Montezuma-Cortez higher than Alamosa for geography purposes and head to head win over Alamosa.  Alamosa has to be placed at #15 to avoid the league match up with Bayfield.  That leaves Aspen going to Bayfield for geography purposes.  Once again I am not on the seeding committee and I am giving my best guess to seed the playoffs then Committee could stick with RPI and just avoid league match ups which would look like this:

First Round Matchups (RPI only)

#1 Bayfield vs #16’Evelyn

#8 Kent Denver vs #9 Salida

#4 La Junta vs #13 Aspen

#5 Platte Valley vs #12 Delta

#3 Basalt vs #14 Alamosa

#6 Rifle vs #11 Berthoud

#7 Faith Christian vs #10 Eaton

#2 Resurrection Christian vs #15 Montezuma-Cortez

Note: This is RPI only ignoring all seeding rules.

First Round Matchups (Seeding Rules with RPI only)

#1 Bayfield vs #16 D’Evelyn

#8 Kent Denver vs #9 Basalt

#4 Salida vs #13 Eaton

#5 Platte Valley vs #12 Aspen

#3 La Junta vs #14 Montezuma-Cortez

#6 Rifle vs #11 Berthoud

#7 Faith Christian vs #10 Delta

#2 Resurrection Christian vs #15 Alamosa

Note: I used RPI and only this seeding rule:

  • The seeding committee will determine the #1 overall seed and place that team on the bracket. The #2 team for the same conference as the #1 overall seed will then be placed on the board for consideration.  The seeding committee will then determine the #2 overall seed and place that team on the bracket.  The #2 team from the same conference s the #2 overall seed will then be placed on the board for consideration.  This process followed until all 16 teams are seeded.
