6man League Breakdown, 8man League Breakdown

Week Two Breakdown 8-Man and 6-Man

Week Two Breakdown

Class 8-Man

In the week one match-ups we saw the number 1 team in the state fall to an unranked team and also had two other upsets. Caliche preseason ranked number one fell to unranked Kiowa 12 to 6 as they will need to rebound for week two. Akron was upset by Holyoke (1A) but that is a hard game to judge anything off because it was a 1A matchup not 8-Man. The other upset was #9 Simla losing to unranked Haxtun 46 to 20. The only other game of interest from week one was #5 Hoehne vs McClave which pitted two playoff teams against each other. Hoehne easily won though 41 to 8 to get their 2015 season off to a great start.

This week we feature a brand new number 1 in Norwood and they start off the campaign against Del Norte. Norwood should be able to dominate Del Norte in the match as Del Norte has started the campaign off 0-2 with losses to Rangeley and Springfield. Norwood is coming off a great start with a good win against Dove Creek 41 to 12 and Mancos. Against Mancos they ran very effectively and will look to continue that. Norwood won this match-up a year ago.

Another great game this week will feature #4 Hoehne vs Springfield. Hoehne is coming off a great win last week against McClave. No stats were reported but Hoehne usually relies heavily on their ground game and I am sure that was the case in there win over McClave. Springfield opened the season with a tough loss to #7 Sargent 40 to 28 and then won against Del Norte last week 46 to 0 using a very strong first half to secure the game. Springfield ran effectively against Del Norte racking up 324 rushing yards. Springfield will be hoping to gain off that momentum and upset Hoehne.

#7 Sargent travels to Wiley. Sargent after taking a bye week will be traveling this week to Wiley who also started the season 1-0. Sargents first game of the season was against then ranked Springfield. Sargent will be once again leaning on their ground game as they only threw the ball six times completing one. They did run the ball very good rushing for over 300 yards. They will need to try and balance their attack if they want to have success. Wiley opened the season with a win over Cripple Creek-Victor 50 to 6. They will look to build off that victory. Sargent won this match-up a year ago.

#10 Akron vs Fowler will be the last round of ranked games this week. Akron last week faced (1A) opponent Holyoke and lost but they were playing 11 man football instead of 8-man and will step back into the 8-Man ranks this week against Fowler. Akron had a very balanced attack against Holyoke throwing for 132 yards and rushing for 259 yards. They will be happy to be back playing 8-man where they were very good last year. Fowler started the season off against a Las Animas team that is struggling winning 46 to 8. Fowler ran the ball with ease. Rushing for 325 yards and averaging 9.8 yards per carry. They will be facing a much tougher defense this week and will need to lean on their ground game if they want to pull the upset. Akron won this match-up a year ago.

One last key game this week will have preseason ranked Simla vs a playoff team from a year ago Merino. Merino opened the season unranked and will look to jump into the pull with a win this week. Merino faced off against Hayden last week and won easily 58 to 0. They were very balanced in there attack throwing for over 198 yards and rushing for 183 yards. Simla is coming off a very tough loss to Haxtun. Simla will need their defense to be much better this week as Haxtun put up 28 first half points which basically secured them the game. Merino won this match-up a year ago and look to do the same this week.

Non-Top Ten games

Gilpin County at Pikes Peak Christian                                                      Vail Christian vs Longmont Christian

Class 6-Man

Week 1 offered a few top ten match-ups. #1 Fleming took on #8 North Park and reassured there #1 ranking winning 68 to 25 against a North Park team that upset #5 Peetz the week before. The other top ten match-up had #3 Arickaree/Woodlin facing #5 Peetz. In what was a high scoring and great match-up Arickaree/Woodlin came out ahead 58 to 50. The other game of interest from last week was #9 Walsh vs Cheraw which saw Cheraw pull the upset 64 to 32.

In week 2 there are plenty of great match-ups. Starting off with #1 Fleming facing an Idalia team who is in consideration for being ranked. Fleming started off their campaign nicely by beating a ranked in North Park. Their offensive attack was very balanced throwing for 141 yards and rushing for 205 yards.  Idalia is coming off a great win last week beating Stratton/Liberty 54 to 38. Idalia scored all but 8 points in the first half. Idalia will once again need their offense to be very effective if they want to pull the upset of #1 Fleming.

#2 Eads will be on the road this week against Hi Plains. Eads started the campaign nicely beating Manzanola pretty handily 54 to 6. They are starting there run again towards a state championship after losing in the finals last year. Hi Plains also started off great by beating Flagler 59 to 36 using a great second quarter to pull away. Hi Plains used a very balanced attack in their win throwing for over 200 yards and rushing for over 250 yards. For Hi Plains to pull the upset they must stay balanced but hope their defense can slow down the high power offense of Eads.

The lone top ten match-up features #3 Arickaree/Woodlin vs #6 Pawnee. Arickaree/Woodlin had the most entertaining match-up last week with a great win against Peetz 58 to 50. Arickaree/Woodlin held on late as Peetz scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to make it interesting. Arickaree/Woodlin relied heavily on the ground attack throwing only 10 times and completing only 5 passes for 23 yards. They did run the ball very good rushing 35 times for 320 yards for a nice 9.1 average. Pawnee started off the campaign with a nice win over Briggsdale 54 to 28. Pawnee used a monster 26 point fourth quarter to finally pull away from Briggsdale, the score was 28 to 20 entering the fourth quarter. Pawnee relied heavily on their rushing attack rushing for 318 yards on 29 carries but Pawnee was also able to keep Briggsdale honest throwing for 121 yards. This will be the best game in 6 Man this week.
