Class 3A Girls Basketball First Half Thoughts and Observations

I don’t plan on posting my first rankings or first in depth look at the RPI or leagues until the week of January 7th I decided to post an article looking at the months of November and December.

Class 3A

We will start with a look at my preseason rankings.  My Top ten was #1 Colorado Springs Christian, #2 St. Mary’s, #3 Lutheran, #4 Resurrection Christian, #5 University, #6 Pagosa Springs, #7 Delta, #8 Salida, #9 Eaton, #10 Alamosa.  Out of the Top 10 Preseason teams 8 of the Top 10 are still in my latest rankings.  Salida and Alamosa are the two teams who have fallen out of the Top 10. Looking at Salida and Alamosa, Salida is 4-4 and have played a tough schedule.  Salida losses are to Del Norte, Pagosa Springs, University, and Grand Valley.  Salida did pick up a quality win over Weld Central and seem to be playing better basketball.  Alamosa is 4-3 on the year and two 1-point losses could have them with a much-improved record.  Alamosa 3 losses are to Montrose, Sanford, and Delta all three are not bad losses and all three were by less than 6 points.  Alamosa did pick up a quality win over Moffat county but that is their lone quality win on the season.  Alamosa still looks poised to make a solid run in the IML and could be a Top 3 team in the IML.  Looking at some teams in the Top 10 you must look at St. Mary’s, C.S Christian, Pagosa Springs, Lutheran, and Centauri.  The biggest observation I have for Class 3A Girls is everyone is chasing two teams.  St. Mary’s and Colorado Springs Christian are way ahead of everyone else and currently seems like a two teams race for the State Crown.  St. Mary’s who is my #1 team already has quality wins over Resurrection Christian (by 35), Pagosa Springs (by 22), University (by 19), and Lutheran (by 24).  Colorado Springs Christian who is my #2 teams already has quality wins over Lutheran (by 22) and Pagosa Springs (by 18).  Currently we await to see if anyone will challenge these two teams.  My #3 team in Class 3A is Pagosa Springs.  Pagosa Springs has two losses to St. Mary’s and C.S Christian.  Pagosa Springs though has some quality wins over Salida, Colorado Academy, Manitou Springs, Lutheran, and Eaton.  Pagosa Springs is a very good basketball team and with games against the #1 and #2 teams know how much they must improve this year.   Lutheran is my #4 team and have also played good basketball.  They have 3 losses this year to the #1, #2, and #3 teams in Class 3A.  Lutheran biggest knock is they lack a quality win.  Lutheran should be the top of the Class in the Metro league.  The final team to really talk about is Centauri.  Centauri is 8-1 on the season with their lone loss coming to 2A #1 Del Norte.  Centauri has improved as the year has gone on as well and have quality wins over Moffat County, Swink, Cedaredge, Delta, and Sanford.  Centauri is a team that will continue to improve as the year goes on and could be a threat once the postseason starts.  Offensively Centauri must improve.  Class 3A has just two undefeated teams remaining and they are St. Mary’s and C.S Christian.  Like I said they are just ahead of everyone.  At this point I will give 3 teams who impressed me before break, 3 teams who may have struggled a bit before break but could make noise after break, and then give my Top 3 teams for each league looking at results from before break.

My 3 Impressive Teams

I am picking these teams off quality wins and where in the preseason rankings they were.  I will not include St. Mary’s and C.S Christian on these lists because everyone knew these two teams were going to be very good.

Centauri (8-1), Preseason #11

Centauri lost a ton from last year’s team including a great group of seniors.  Centauri also lost their head coach from last year.  With all that said Centauri is still off to a great start and with their lone loss coming to the #1 team in 2A they are poised to make a run for an IML crown.  Centauri still has plenty to improve upon mainly their offense.

The Academy (5-1), Preseason NR

The Academy was not ranked in my Preseason Top 20 and have also played good basketball.  The Academy has quality wins over Valley, Platte Valley, Englewood, Denver Christian, and Kent Denver.  The Academy lone loss is to Eaton who is ranked ahead of them and was a 3-point game.  The Academy will be the favorite in the Frontier League.

Delta (6-1), Preseason 7

Delta was in my Preseason Top 10 but the way they started the year is what helped them make my list.  Delta came out the gates with 4 quality wins over Vanguard, Manitou Springs, Olathe, and Alamosa.  Delta did loss to Centauri but then bounced back with 18+ points wins over Hotchkiss and Cedaredge.  I think Delta win over Cedaredge could send a message to the Western Slope but don’t expect to have the Western Slope League to just fold.  Delta has proven they could be a real threat for a Great 8 berth.

3 teams Who could make some noise after Break

Salida (4-4), Preseason #8

Salida started the year a bit slow picking up back to back losses and losing 4 of their first 5 games.  Salida though played quality competition and should be ready for a run in the Tri-Peaks League.  Salida should contend for a Top 4 finish but they must continue to improve and winning 3 straight is a good start.

Alamosa (4-3), Preseason #10

Alamosa got shocked right out of the gates picking up a one point last second loss to Sanford.  Alamosa though seems to have found their rhythm.  Alamosa should be a top 3 team in the IML this year.  Alamosa has 3 teams below them that they should beat and should help this team improve their record.

Colorado Academy (4-3), Preseason #15

The biggest thing for Colorado Academy will be consistency.  Colorado Academy has played pretty consistent basketball, but can they improve heading into the league schedule.  Colorado Academy has 3 losses to 4A Littleton, Pagosa Springs, and Resurrection Christian.  They have dominated in their wins and could make some noise in a weaker Metro League.
