Girls Basketball Class 2A Top Ten Breakdown
2A Girls could be one of the most competitive classes in Colorado. Currently I would say the Top 15 teams in 2A are all solid and a group of 8 teams that could all challenge for a state title. 2A girls has been fun to watch this year as things continue to move and I am sure plenty of things will continue to change as the season goes on.
#1 Del Norte (7-0)
Del Norte is off to a very good start at 7-0. Del Norte has picked up some very good quality wins over Salida, Centauri, Sanford, and Sangre De Cristo. Del Norte has not opened their 2019 season and have had a long break since their last game on December 15th. Del Norte opens 2019 against Crested Butte and then face Center both of which are non-league game. Seeing if Del Norte can continue the hot start is key and seeing if this team can continue to grow is also very important.
#2 Wray (7-1)
Wray started the year going 5-0 before running into a very good Dundy County-Stratton team. Wray has played well against Colorado teams going 4-0 and picking up quality wins over Yuma and Holyoke. I am sure their next game has been circled on their calendar and in my opinion will be for the league crown. Wray plays Yuma on 1/11 and this is probably the biggest game in the smaller classifications. A win for Wray and they will be extremely close to locking up the #1 seed for the District tournament. Wray was able to shake the rust off with a win over Burlington 59-33. I am excited to see the outcome of the Wray vs Yuma game.
#3 Limon (7-1)
Limon is off to a very solid start at 7-1. Limon lone loss come to #1 1A Kit Carson 51-38. Limon played well against Kit Carson and will be valuable experience for Limon. Limon already opened their 2019 schedule and played two quality opponents off the bat. Limon beat Genoa-Hugo 49-25 and Denver Christian 56-46. Things do not get much easier Limon as they play Flagler/Hi Plains and then a Top 5 matchup against Holyoke on 1/12. This game has big massive implications for RPI and momentum the rest of the way. Limon will test how much they have grown this weekend.
#4 Yuma (5-2)
Yuma started their season with back to back losses but have since won 5 straight games and are finally healthy. Yuma opened 2019 with a 74-20 win over Akron and a good way to shake off the rust of break. As mentioned with Wray, Yuma has a massive game against #2 Wray. Yuma lost their last meeting by 10 but were not fully health. If I was in the area this would be a game I would be going to. Yuma would like to grab a huge league game.
#5 Holyoke (4-2)
Holyoke started their season winning their first 4 games. Holyoke picked up two quality wins in that stretch beating Highland and Haxtun. Holyoke now is on a two-game skid picking up losses to Pine Bluffs WY and Wray. Holyoke played well against Wray falling by just 4 points. Holyoke now has two more quality opponents coming to down when they host 1A #2 Haxtun and #3 Limon. Holyoke must be ready to play after a long break. Holyoke still controls their own destiny in District 2 but getting off to a good start in 2019 is key.
#6 Swink (6-1)
Swink opened their year playing in the La Junta holiday shootout and they fell in their first game to Centauri 39-35. Swink has bounced back well winning 6 straight games and have started 2019 with a win over Las Animas 66-12. Swink has two big games coming up and could really take control of their own destiny. Swink plays undefeated #10 Rye and Crowley County both in contention for the league crown. Swink must come ready to play and must be ready for both teams.
#7 Simla (6-1)
Simla picked up their first loss of the season right before break but bounced back well beating a solid Byers team 58-48. Simla now has some momentum heading into the rest of January. Simla has two big games this week against Calhan and Dolores Huerta and both games have big implications in term of District seeding. Simla is the favorite to win District 8 and two games this week could take control of their District seeding.
#8 Soroco (9-1)
Soroco is off to a solid 9-1 start and are playing really good basketball. Soroco lone loss of the year is to 4A Prairie View. Soroco opened 2019 with a solid 70-24 win over West Grand. This week Soroco has a big game against 1A #10 De Beque and has big implications for RPI. Soroco has a full slate of League games coming up and must be ready for the League battles.
#9 Meeker (6-1)
Meeker has picked up 5 straight wins since losing to rival Soroco. In their 5 game stretch they have picked up quality wins over Grand Valley, Rifle, and 1A North Park. Meeker started 2019 with a win over North Park and seem to be coming together as a team. Meeker this week plays Caprock Academy and Vail Christian. Meeker will be favored in both and should get off to a solid start in league play.
#10 Rye (9-0)
Rye joins the rankings after picking up a solid win over Holly and starting undefeated. Rye picked up their first two quality wins of the season beating Holly and Pueblo Centennial. Rye now faces their toughest game of the year when they travel to Swink. Rye can nearly lock up a #1 District seed with a win over Swink. We will learn a lot about Rye after their game with Swink tonight.
