Class 1A Baseball Regional Predictions
Some very intriguing matchups will take place in the regional rounds. I will give my predictions and just a quick insight.
Regional Predictions-1st Round
#1 Cornerstone Christian over #16 Cheyenne Wells
Cornerstone Christian is playing some of the best baseball in Class 1A. Cornerstone Christian lone loss was to 2A power Peyton and have dominated in 1A. Cheyenne Wells won’t go without a battle and will throw their ace Pelton. Pelton has allowed just 1 run this year and has an ERA of 0.00.
#9 Caliche over #8 Cotopaxi
Caliche is the defending state champions and have played well this year. Caliche relies a lot on their hitting and it will need to come up big. The big question of this game is does Cotopaxi throw Gulliford or their #2. If Cotopaxi throw Gulliford then they have a shot.
#4 Haxtun over #13 Eads
Haxtun moved from 2A to 1A this year and won their district tournament beating Caliche. Coffin, Stephens, and Gerk will need to be big for Haxtun going forward. Eads qualified via RPI. Eads lost to -Stratton/Liberty 20-19 in the district tournament. Eads will have to get solid pitching to pull the upset.
#12 Prairie over #5 Granada
One of the more interesting matchups in the first round is #5 Granada vs #12 Prairie. Granada has two solid pitchers with Freshman Coleman leading the way. McGee is also a solid pitcher for Granada and the question become who does Granada pitch first. Prairie is hoping to pull the upset and have a big upset of Otis to prove they can pull an upset. Prairie will look to Speicher and Littlefield to lead the way. Hitting will be a big key in this game.
#3 Nucla over #14 Stratton/Liberty
Nucla is playing their best baseball of the year and proved it with a 13-0 win over Dove Creek. Gabriel and Wytulka are solid #1 and #2 pitchers for Nucla but question marks after them two is a bit concerning. Nucla can hit the ball well. Stratton/Liberty had a bit of a down year this year going 5-8. A big win over Eads in the District Tournament got them into Regionals. Stratton/Liberty must find consistent pitchers to pull the upset.
#6 Springfield over #11 Longmont Christian
Springfield has a solid #1 with Dukes but finding a consistent #2/#3 will be key for Springfield. I am guessing Springfield tries to limit Dukes, but Springfield must go for the win. Longmont Christian looks to have some solid pitching as well with Saunders leading the way. Longmont Christian is hoping to pull the upset but must have solid outing from their pitchers.
#7 Dove Creek over #10 Evangelical Christian
Dove Creek vs ECA is probably the best matchup in the first round. Dove Creek comes in with solid pitching in the #1 and #2 spot but hitting seems to be their problem with their team average around .260. ECA comes in hitting around .279 which is slightly better than Dove Creek. ECA though pitching could need some consistency. ECA #1 is solid with an ERA around 3.30 but their #2 and #3 are around the 5.00 mark.
#2 Otis over #15 Elbert
Otis is a hitting machine scoring around 279 runs just 1 behind Cornerstone Christian. Otis also has a pair of pitchers with ERA around 2.00 that will hold the fort down. Otis must keep the offense rolling to make a deep run. Elbert will be looking to pull the upset. Elbert must get a solid outing from their #1 and their bats must come alive to keep pace with Otis.
Second Round Predictions (winner advance to the Final Four played at All Star Field)
#1 Cornerstone Christian over #9 Caliche
#4 Haxtun over #12 Prairie
#3 Nucla over #6 Springfield
#2 Otis over #7 Dove Creek
