MileHigh Prep Report Preseason Rankings 8-Man

Sedgwick County will reload this year and try to win their fifth straight state title.  The rest of 8-man will be reloading or learning from experience.

Note: I am just going to quickly give the rankings and a quick breakdown of what they are returning.  Later on, in August full league breakdown.

Class 8-Man

Rank Team Notes
#1 Sedgwick County

Defending 4 Time State Champions

A great senior Class leaves Sedgwick County as this senior class won a state title all 4 years.  The upcoming Seniors have a chance to repeat the same feat.  Sedg Co loses some key pieces to least year’s team including Layne Green.  Sedgwick County won’t be rebuilding this year as they will just reload.  Jared Ehmke will step into the QB position and look Beau Parker to carry the load as the main rusher this year.  Sedgwick County defensively will lose some senior leadership but return leading tacklers Dalton Carlson and Beau Parker.  Sedg Co also returns 7 of their 11 top tacklers as this team will be looking for the fifth straight title.
#2 Mancos HS

Made the playoffs, lost in the first round

Mancos will be losing 3 seniors from last year and will return the majority of the talent from last year’s 9-1 team.  Mancos biggest loss will be at the RB position.  Mancos though will look for Anthony Medina also Mancos returns starting QB Breccen Morelli.  Mancos also looks to return plenty of size from last year’s team.  Defensively Mancos must replace leadership as well but with leading tackler Colt Fury return plus 8 of their 11 top tacklers return Mancos looks poised to make a deeper run in the playoffs this year.
#3 Merino

Made the playoffs, lost in the Semifinals

Merino got healthy and peaked at the right time last year to make an incredible run into the semifinals before running into Sedgwick County.  Merino will be losing some key pieces with 6 seniors graduating.  Merino though has plenty of talent and size coming back to improve on last year’s season.  Merino returns QB Cade Conger and #2 rusher Trent Elliott, look for both these players to have big seasons.  Merino defensively will have some holes to fill with 3 of their top 5 tacklers leaving.  Merino though will return leading tackler Trent Elliott and 6 of their 11 top tacklers.  Merino will need to find leadership and this team could be poised for a deep run again this year.
#4 Fowler HS

Made the playoffs, lost in the first round

Fowler loses 6 seniors to graduation and a lot of them were in key leadership positions.  Fowler though will look to reload and make a deeper push in the playoffs.  Fowler returns QB Luke Bitter and #2 rusher Jackson Bates.  Fowler will need to find some offensive linemen to step up, but this offense should still be very solid.  Defensively Fowler is coming back loaded with their top 3 tacklers all returning (Proctor, Mobbley, Schiffer).  Fowler does lose 3 senior leaders but will return 8 of their 11 top tacklers.  Fowler defense will look to be a Top 3 defense this year.
#5 Caliche HS

Made the playoffs, lost in the quarterfinals

Caliche losses a big senior class of 10 this year including some key pieces on the offensive line and long-time starter Adam Zink.  Caliche though will not be rebuilding this year and should reload.  Caliche I feel has a very solid upcoming Senior and Sophomore Class.  Dylan Huss will lead the offense again this year at QB and look for Ezekiel Johnson to have a bigger role in the offense.  Defensively Caliche will have to replace their leading tackler but will return 7 of their 11 top tacklers.  Caliche will need Dylan Huss and Ezekiel Johnson to really step up and become leaders this year.
#6 Hoehne

Runners-Up

Hoehne had a great run last season getting to the State Championship and coming up short against Sedgwick County.  Hoehne is losing a good senior Class of 7 players but most were in the skill position group.  Hoehne should return a very solid core of offensive linemen.  Hoehne also returns QB Weston Hill and look for a big season from the QB.  Hoehne will also return #3 rusher Dario Orozco and he must have a big season for Hoehne this season.  Defensively Hoehne returns 6 of their 11 top tacklers but lose some key leadership losing their top 2 tacklers.  Shane Montoya and Dario Orozco must step up this year and lead this defense.
#7 Sanford HS

Missed the playoffs, went 6-3 last year

Sanford improved drastically last season going 6-3 but late losses to Dove Creek and Sargent cost them a shot at the playoffs.  Sanford loses 6 seniors from last year’s team including key pieces Dalton Gartrell and Chase Holman.  Sanford offensively will need to fill the QB position but look for RB Clay Canty to move into that spot.  Also look for RB Kelton Gartrell to have a break out season for Sanford.  Sanford also returns key pieces on the offensive line.  Defensively Sanford returns 7 of their 11 top tacklers including leading tackler Thomas Faucette.  Look for Sanford to battle for a playoff spot this year.
#8 Pikes Peak Christian

Made the playoffs, lost in the Semifinals

Pikes Peak Christian had a great year last year making a run into the Semifinals.  Pikes Peak Christian will be losing a solid senior Class of 7.  Pikes Peak Christian will be hurt most on the offensive line and will be looking for some younger players to really step up this year.  Pikes Peak Christian does return QB Jackson Thorne and both #1 and #2 rushers Hudson Grant & Sean McKinley.  Pikes Peak Christian defensively will be returning 7 of their 11 top tacklers and their leading two tacklers Andrew Harris and Hudson Grant.  Pikes Peak Christian biggest concern will be their offensive line.
#9 Sargent HS

Made the playoffs, lost in the first round

Sargent may have surprised a few people by going 7-3 and making the playoffs.  Sargent will loss a solid senior class of 8 but look for Coach Pepper to reload and push for the playoffs again.  Sargent will have some holes to fill on the offensive side of the ball.  Sargent will need to find just one replacement on the offensive line and look for Chance Padilla or Marcus Lopez to fill that spot.  Sargent also will need a new QB & RB but look for Kage Pepper and Blaine Behil to fill those spots.  Sargent has a very good upcoming Junior Class and they will have to step up.  Defensively Sargent returns 5 of their 11 top tacklers but look for Braxton Asbell to lead this unit.
#10 Holly HS

Made the playoffs, lost in the quarterfinals

Holly losses a very good senior Class including key pieces at QB, RB, and the offensive line.  Holly though is not without Talent coming back and will need certain players to step up.  The offensive line I think was hurt the most abut look for Grayden Flint and Jangellian Markez to step up and lead.  At QB Holly will replace long time starter Kobe Davis with Dakota Eaton and look for Andy Ramos to step up at the RB position.  Defensively Holly returns 5 of their 11 starters including their top 3 tacklers.  Holly will look for Grayden Flint and Diego Tamayo to lead this defense.
#11 West Grand HS

Made the playoffs, lost in the quarterfinals

West Grand also losses a very good senior Class of 7 including key pieces at QB, WR, and the offensive line.  West Grand has a big piece to replace with Luis Dominguez graduating. Look for Jacob Buller and Rene Dominguez to step up and fill the hole.  The offensive line will need to find a new leader but look for Josiah Mcdonald and Collin Warren to step up.  Defensively West Grand returns 6 of their 11 top tacklers but are losing their top 3 tacklers.  Alejandro Castanon and Marcus Sanchez must step up to lead this defensive unit this year.
#12 Dayspring Christian

Made the playoffs, lost in the first round

Dayspring Christian had their second straight 4-5 season but were able to get into the playoffs.  Dayspring Christian will have a new head coach this season and are losing 7 seniors.  Dayspring Christian loses some key pieces on the offensive line and at RB.  Dayspring Christian will be returning QB Christian Still and he must have an improved season this year and limit the amount of INT’s.  At RB look Caden Bonnell to step up and have a big year.  The offensive line will be needing one or two replacement but look for Seth Wilkinson to lead this group.  Defensively Dayspring Christian returns 7 of their 11 top tacklers including leading tackler Austin Mclean.  Dayspring Christian is hoping to improve from their 4-5 mark and this defense could lead the way.
#13 Front Range Christian

Made the playoffs, lost in the first round

Front Range Christian played their first year of 8-man and were able to get into the playoffs.  Front Range Christian lose just 2 seniors from last year’s team.  Front Range Christian should be able to make a bit more of a splash this year.  Front Range Christian returns QB Luke Hiltman who threw for 2000 yards.  Front Range Christian also returns leading rusher Josh Lang.  I really think for Front Range Christian to improve this year their offensive line must play better, and Front Range Christian must be tougher against top opponents.  Defensively Front Range Christian returns 9 of their 11 top tacklers including leading tackler Josh Lang.
#14 Vail Christian

Made the playoffs, lost in the first round

Vail Christian moved back into the 8-man ranks and were able to qualify for the playoffs and go 7-3.  Vail Christian will be hoping to improve from last year’s mark but replacing 8 seniors won’t be easy.  Vail Christian may need to find some replacements on the offensive line but look for a solid upcoming Senior Class to fill those holes.  Vail Christian also returns starting QB Jamison Lee and RB Chris Cappel.  This offense could be tough if a offensive line can come together.  Defensively Vail Christian is returning 6 of their 11 top tacklers.  Jamison Lee and Chris Cappel must have big seasons on defense as well if Vail Christian plan to get back to the playoffs.
#15 Dove Creek

Missed the playoffs, went 5-4 last year

Dove Creek losses just 2 seniors from last year’s team but they were offensive linemen.  Dove Creek also has low #’s so this could also affect how far this team goes.  Dove Creek went 5-4 last year but the big win for them was over Sanford and could help set the pace for this season.  Dove Creek must find offensive linemen to step up this year and if they do watch out for Dove Creek.  Dove Creek also returns QB Chorbin Cressler and starting RB Gauge Thompson.  Dove Creek offensively could be tough, but their offensive line is key.  Defensively Dove Creek returns 10 of their top 11 tacklers.  Leading tackler Wyatt Kennedy returns, and this could be a big year for Dove Creek
#16 Rangely HS

Made the playoffs, lost in the quarterfinals

Rangely losses a big senior class of 10 players including QB, RB, and the majority of the offensive line.  Rangely may take a bit of a step back this year but a solid returning Senior Class should be able to fill the holes.  The big position needed to be filled is at QB but look for Keihlin Myers to move into that position.  At RB look for Tytus Coombs or Anthony Lujan to lead in that position.  The offensive line will be inexperience but has the size to still be tough.  Defensively Rangely has some holes to fill losing 7 of their 11 top tackelrs.  Anthony Lujan will have to lead a young defense along with Tytus Coombs.
  Other Teams to Watch
  Simla HS

Made the playoffs, lost in the quarterfinals

Simla made big improvements last year and made the playoffs. A senior Class of 5 takes some key pieces but I think Simla could quickly move into the Top 16 this year.  Simla needs a new QB but look for RB Darias Harms to carry the load early on.  Defensively leadership is needed after losing 4 of their 5 leading tacklers.  If this defense can replace the holes this team will jump up quickly.
Calhan Calhan moved into the 8-man ranks last season and went 4-5 in their first season.  Calhan now has some holes to fill on the offensive line.  Calhan does return QB Brandon Eglinton and #2 rusher Gage Alexander.  Defensively Calhan returns 5 of their 11 top tacklers but have leadership coming back with Gage Alexander
Elbert Elbert made big improvements last season and finished the season at 6-3.  Elbert though will lose 7 seniors and will have some key holes to fill on the offensive line.  Elbert though does return QB Nathan Tornone but must find a new RB but look for Sebastian Rose to step up.  Defensively Elbert has plenty of talent returning with 7 of their 11 tacklers return including leading tackler Garrett Buchana.
Custer County Custer County went 5-4 last season and just missed the playoffs.  Custer County now has some key pieces to replace losing 8 seniors.  Custer County will need to find a new starting QB and RB but look for Cole Budds to step up at RB and Ben Penkoff.  Defensively Custer County returns 6 of their 11 top tacklers including leading tackler Cole Budds.
Norwood Norwood missed the playoffs for the first time probably since 2008.  Norwood will lose 5 seniors from last year’s team including do it all player Will Gabriel.  Norwood may be rebuilding this year but the tradition from this team could get them quickly back going.  Look for Tyler Wytulka to step up and lead this team.
Springfield Springfield just missed out on the playoffs last year and lose 6 seniors from last year’s team.  QB Beau Dukes was the big loss from last year’s team.  Springfield will be looking to find some key replacements.  Look for Luke Hutches to take over at QB and Hayden Lasley to step up at the RB position.  Defensively Springfield will need players to step u only returning 5 of their 11 top tacklers.
