Class 2A Football Week 4 Top Ten Breakdown

Note: I am low on Class 2A pictures if you or know anyone who takes pictures please let me know.

A lot less movement in the 2A polls this week.  #1 La Junta was upset by Alamosa last week and falls to #5.  Sterling takes over as the #1 team with 3 top 10 victories to start the year.  Delta also moves up a spot to #2 following a big 61-0 victory over Salida.  Alamosa moves from #9 to #3 following the upset.  Eaton joins the rankings this week with Elizabeth falling out after their loss to Platte Valley.

#1 Sterling (3-0)

Sterling takes over as the #1 team after three top 10 victories over Resurrection Christian, Eaton, and Classical Academy last week.  Prior to last weeks game Sterling had scored just 20 points on offense but last week everything clicked for Sterling as they beat Classical Academy 48-21.  Sterling had 359 yards of total offense and were balanced in their attack throwing for 135 yards and rushing for 224 yards.  Defensively it was the most points allowed but they held TCA to 0 yards passing and held Cade Palmer to 96 yards rushing.  This week Sterling makes the trip to Nebraska where they will face Scottsbluff who is ranked the #7 team in Nebraska and the #2 team in their Class.  This will be a good test for Sterling.

#2 Delta (2-0)

Delta has opened their 2019 season with back to back shutouts.  This week Delta blanked Salida 61-0 and have now outscored opponents 103 to 0.  Delta offensively had their way last week passing for 167 yards and rushing for 311 yards.  QB Nolan Bynum went 6 of 8 for 167 yards and 3 TDs.  The rushing attack was led by Timothy Horn who had 104 yards rushing and 1 TD on just 11 attempts.  Defensively Delta stopped a Salida team who scored 55 points in their first two games to 0.  Delta will now hit the road for the first time this season to face Montezuma-Cortez.  Montezuma-Cortez is 0-2 on the season and scored their first points of the 2019 season last week.  Montezuma-Cortez is rebuilding after losing a great senior class last season.  Expect Delta to continue their dominance on defense again.

#3 Alamosa

Alamosa continues their hot start with the upset of #1 La Junta 22-6.  Alamosa has passed two straight tough testes and have quickly shot up the polls.  Alamosa was able to get their offense going against a tough La Junta defense racking up 285 yards of total offense.  QB Brendon Madril had a solid day passing for 98 yards and the rushing attack was led by RB Luke Smith who ran for 90 yards.  Alamosa offensively passed a huge test but must continue to improve.  Defensively Alamosa had a big day holding La Junta to just 6 points.  Donovan Ramirez had a big day for Alamosa forcing an INT and had a fumble recovery as well as 8 tackles.  Alamosa seems to have things going in the right direction.  This week Alamosa host 3A Mitchell who is 0-2 on the season.  Even though Mitchell has lost both games this could still be a tough test for Alamosa.  I do expect Alamosa to continue their hot start.

#4 Platte Valley

Platte Valley picked up their first loss of the 2019 season two week ago.  Platte Valley though did a great job of bouncing back and picked up a huge 30 to 7 win over previously ranked Elizabeth.  Platte Valley did a good job of rebounding after a loss.  Offensively Platte Valley racked up 315 yards of total offense.  The passing attack had 119 yards passing with the rushing attack picking up 196 yards.  Platte Valley is still working on a few things offensively, but their defense got back on track holding Elizabeth to just 7 points.  Platte Valley this week will face rival and #9 ranked Eaton.  This will be a great test for Platte Valley defense, and we will see how they do stopping the run.  Offensively this will also test Platte Valley as this will be the best defense, they have faced in 2A this year.

#5 La Junta

La Junta picked up their first loss of the season falling to Alamosa 22-6.  La Junta will now be looking to quickly bounce back this week.  La Junta did a good job slowing down this Alamosa offense, but they will work on shoring up the holes that Alamosa exposed.  Offensively La Junta will look to find the answer.  La Junta has not scored over 20 points in a game yet but have also played two defenses that are playing well.  La Junta this week will face Kent Denver on the road.  This will be the second road game for La Junta in this early season.  Kent Denver is currently 1-1 on the season and played good defense holding Faith Christian to just 20 points in the loss.  I think this will be a good opportunity for this La Junta defense to really dominate and they must stop the run to have success.  Offensively look for La Junta to fix some problems and I see La Junta rebounding against Kent Denver.

#6 Rifle

Rifle continued to dominate picking up their second victory of the season over Eagle Valley 31-3.  Rifle offensively played really well.  Rifle did not attempt a pass this game.  The rushing attack for Rifle racked up 307 yards on 27 carries for 11.4 yards per carry.  Levi Warfel rushed for 161 yards and Kenny Tlaxcala rushe for 94 yards.  Rifle rushing attack is the real deal and have proven it so far.  Rifle defensively continues to play well giving up just 3 points to 3A Eagle Valley.  Rifle this week hosts 3A Pueblo County.  Pueblo County is 1-1 on the season after they picked up their first win over Canon City last week.  This game will be decided by whoever controls the line of scrimmage.  Both teams want to run the ball and expect a good matchup for Rifle in this game.

#7 Resurrection Christian

Resurrection Christian had a bye last week.  The previous week Resurrection Christian upset #2 Faith Christian and used the bye week to prepare for #10 Classical Academy.  Against Faith Christian, Resurrection Christian got their rushing attack going rushing for 199 yards.  The passing attack still struggled passing for just 40 yards.  Buck Coors and Tanner Applebee both stepped up last week to lead the offense and will be needed against a very good Classical Academy defense.  Defensively Resurrection Christian will have to stop the run this week.  If Resurrection Christian struggles stopping the run then it could be a long day for this defense.  Resurrection Christian offense could be forced this week to really step up if needed.

#8 Faith Christian

Faith Christian rebounded from their first loss of the season with a 20-0 victory over rival Kent Denver.  Defensively Faith Christian played outstanding holding Kent Denver to just 79 yards of total offense.  Offensively Faith Christian had a solid day from their rushing attack racking up 231 yards rushing but the passing attack struggled picking up just 9 yards.  I do expect QB Isiah Kroll to step up this week.  RB Edoardo Castaneda led all rushers with 160 yards and 1 TD.  Faith Christian will hit the road this week to take on Manitou Springs.  Manitou Springs is 1-1 on the season and will be looking to also bounce back from their first loss.  Manitou Springs will hope their defense can really step up this week and help their offense which has had some success.  Defensively this will be a good test for Faith Christian.  Offensively Faith Christian should have a solid day and expect QB Isiah Kroll to have a big day.

#9 Eaton

Eaton moved back into the win column and the rankings following a 37-9 victory over D’Evelyn.  Eaton had a big day from QB Scott Grable who threw for 144 yards and 1 TD and ran for another 79 yards.  Eaton offensively really picked it up this game.  Defensively Eaton did struggle stopping the pass giving up 354 yards but were able to keep D’Evelyn out of the endzone.  This week Eaton travels to take on rival and #4 Ranked Platte Valley.  Eaton offensively will be tested and must have a big day yet again from QB Scott Grable.  Defensively Eaton must stop the rushing attack of Platte Valley and force them to throw the ball.  This should be a great game between Eaton and Platte Valley.

#10 Classical Academy

Classical Academy picked up their first loss of the season last week losing to Sterling 48-21.  Defensively TCA gave up 359 yard of total offense and must improve this week.  TCA offensively did not complete a pass, but their rushing attack had success rushing for 273 yards.  Turnovers were also a problem for TCA with 4 total turnovers in the game.  TCA this week hosts #7 Resurrection Christian.  Defensively TCA must stop the run to have any success and for Resurrection Christian to throw the ball.  Offensively this will be another huge test for this offense.  This will be back to back weeks facing a Top defense and we will see how TCA improves heading into this match up.
