6-Man Football First Round Breakdown

Playoff time is upon us.  The 6-Man field is set, and some games kick off today and other will get going tomorrow.  Getting into the State Playoffs is step one with the second step winning your first-round game.  There are some great first round matchups!

#1 Kit Carson (8-0) vs #16 Peetz (2-6) 11/1 @3pm

Kit Carson comes in as the #1 seed and they had a great regular season run.  Kit Carson finished their regular season last week and ended with an 8-0 record.  Kit Carson played against 4 playoff teams going 3-1.  Kit Carson best win of the season was a 48-14 win over #2 Stratton/Liberty but that was the first game of the year.  Defensively Kit Carson has given up 162 points this season and finish with the 3rd best defense in 6-Man.  Offensively Kit Carson scored 448 points which was 6th best in 6-Man.  Kit Carson offensively is a run first team but can attack through the air.  QB Sullivan Farmer has led Kit Carson at QB with 468 yards passing, 10 TDs, and just 2 INTs.  The running game has been led by Jason Mccombs-Farmer who has 901 yards rushing and 19 TDs.  Look for Paul Mitchek and Cordell Farmer to also pitch in with the offense.

Peetz come in as the #16 seed and got into the playoffs just ahead of a few teams.  Peetz had a bit of a rebuilding year this year but have grown a lot and this is great experience for the Juniors and down.  Peetz finished the season with a 2-6 record and play against 6 playoff teams going 0-6.  Peetz by the end of the season started hanging in games more and lost to Prairie in their final game 56-45.  Peetz defensively has given up 423 points and must be on top of their game this week.  Offensively Peetz has scored 265 which is 20th best in 6-Man.  Offensively Peetz has been led by their rushing attack but have proven they can throw the ball.  QB Cooper White has led Peetz in both passing 388 yards, 7 TDs, and 6 INTs and rushing 1219 yards rushing and 15 TDs.  He is the catalyst to Peetz winning games this season.  Look for Michael Turpin and Aiden Curtis to also step up offensively as well.

Kit Carson will be the heavy favorite in this game.  Kit Carson has played well against top competition and now look for a deep run in the playoffs.  Peetz has the tradition and have improved a ton since the beginning of the season.  I think will put up a tough fight, but I am going with Kit Carson in this game.  I think Kit Carson speed and defense will be the main factor.

#8 Flagler/Hi Plains (8-1) vs #9 Eads (5-3) 11/2 @1pm

Flagler/Hi Plains comes into the state tournament as the #8 seed.  Flagler/Hi Plains picked up their first loss of the season last week going down to Stratton/Liberty 67-21.  Flagler/HI Plains will look to quickly bounce.  Flagler/Hi plains finished the regular season with an 8-1 record and played against 4 playoff teams going 3-1.  Defensively Flagler/Hi Plains has given up 259 points on defense and is 14th best in 6-Man.  Flagler/Hi Plains offensively has scored 459 points and is 5th best in 6-Man.  Flagler/Hi Plains offensively turns to QB Zayd Banks 668 yards passing, 13 TDs, and 1 INT.  They also have a pair of RBs in Chris Hile 683 yards rushing and 14 TDs and Cody Banks 525 yards rushing and 9 TDs.  These three are huge for Flagler/Hi Plains offense to get going.

Eads comes into the playoffs with a 5-3 record and on a two-game winning streak.  Eads enters as the #9 seed and have played against 4 playoff teams going 1-3.  Defensively Eads has given up 406 points this season with is 23rd best in 6-man.  Eads defense will be a key role if they plan to pull the upset.  Offensively Eads has scored 415 points which is 7th best in 6-Man.  Offensively Eads is a run first team but QB Cade McDowell has show he can throw with 357 yards passing and 7 TDs.  Eads rushing attack is led by Damian Barnes 1760 yards rushing and 31 TDs and Angel Medina 545 yards passing and 14 TDs.  Eads will rely heavily on their rushing attack to have success in this game.

I think this will be a very good game.  These two teams look to be evenly matched.  Flagler/HI Plains will be the favorite in this game.  Flagler/Hi Plains will have to bounce back from a tough loss and must get their offense going.  Eads has continued to improve this season and will probably need a massive offensive performance to pull the upset.  I think this will be a very high scoring game and I think Flagler/Hi Plains will outscore Eads in a very good game.

#4 Fleming (9-0) vs #13 Deer Trail (7-2) 11/1 @1:30pm

Fleming comes in with a perfect record at 9-0 and the #4 seed.  Fleming has played well this season and played against 4 playoff teams going 4-0.  Defensively Fleming has been impressive giving up just 126 points which is 2nd best in 6-man.  Offensively Fleming has scored 499 points which is 3rd best in 6-Man.  Fleming offensively has been balanced in their attack.  QB Kade Comstock has 711 yards passing, 17 TDs, and 2 INTs.  The rushing attack has been led by Brandon Williams 1010 yards rushing and 20 TDs.  Charles Hobbs and Chris Goss have also played big roles for Fleming offense will also be key for a deep run for Fleming.

Deer Trail is coming off their second loss of the season losing to Cheyenne Wells last week 72-19.  Deer Trail will now have to quickly bounce back and now face another top team.  Deer Trail comes into the game with a 7-2 record and played against 2 playoff teams this year going 0-2.  Deer Trail defensively gave up 249 points which is 13th best in 6-Man.  Offensively Deer Trail has scored 372 points which is 11th best in 6-Man.  Offensively Deer Trail has been able to attack both on the ground and through the air.  QB Kolter Eldringhoff has 1488 yards passing, 26 TDs, and 6 INTs.  RB Walker Morelock leads all rushers with 1188 yards rushing and 18 TDs.  Dayne Woodis is also another huge part of the offense and these three must have success if Deer Trail plan to pull the upset.

Fleming will be the heavy favorite in this game.  Deer Trail offensively will need a huge game and must be able to score points if they plan to pull the upset.  Fleming will be tested by a balanced offensive threat, but I think their offense could have a big day.  I think Deer Trail will play tough, but I think Fleming defensively will have success stopping Deer Trails offense and I am going with Fleming in this game.

#5 Prairie (7-2) vs #12 Cotopaxi (6-3) 11/2 @2pm

Prairie comes into the playoffs as the #5 seed and winners of 4 straight games.  Prairie has a 7-2 record and played against 6 playoff teams going 4-2 in those games.  Prairie defensively has given up 285 points which is 17th best in 6-Man.  Offensively Prairie has scored 412 points which is 8th best in 6-Man.  Prairie offensively has been led by their passing attack.  QB Mitch Dollerschell has had a good season passing for 1172 yards, 25 TDs, and just 3 INTs.  The rushing attack has had success at times with RB Arek Wulf rushing for 491 yards and 7 TDs.  Garrett Lindell and Xander Speicher are two other names to look out for as well as Prairie looks to move into the Quarterfinals.

Cotopaxi comes into the playoffs as the #12 seed and coming off a tough 20-12 loss last week.  Cotopaxi is 6-3 on the season and played against 4 playoff teams going 1-3 in those games.  Cotopaxi defensively has given up 183 yards which 5th best in 6-Man.  Offensively Cotopaxi has scored 331 points which is 14th best in 6-Man.  Offensively Cotopaxi has been led by their passing attack.  Freshman QB Ty Coleman has had a good season passing for 1293 yards, 22 TDs, and just 3 INTs.  His growth and performance have been huge for Cotopaxi this season.  The rushing attack is led by Tyler Sawyer 694 yards rushing and 9 TDs.  Two other names to look out for are WR Frank Ogden 483 yards receiving and Jonah Bertolino.

These two teams just played each other, and it was down to the wire with Prairie scored 12 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to win 20-12.  This should be another big game and I think just as close.  Cotopaxi is out to prove teams from the Southwest can win playoffs games.  Prairie is hoping to make another return trip to the quarterfinals.  This should be a great game and I am going with Prairie once against due to homefield advantage and their defense.

#3 Cheyenne Wells (8-1) vs #14 Mountain Valley (5-3) 11/2 @1pm

Cheyenne Wells enters the playoffs as the #3 seed.  Cheyenne Wells finished the regular season with an 8-1 record and played against 5 playoff teams going 4-1.  Cheyenne Wells defensively has given up 198 points which is 7th best in 6-man.  Offensively Cheyenne Wells is 1 of two teams to break the 500 points mark and have scored 545 points which is tied for the best in 6-Man.  Cheyenne Wells has attacked teams both on the ground and thru the air and have 3 players who are key to this team’s success. QB Kyle Nelson has 694 yards passing, 16 TDs, and 4 INTs, RB Cade Mitchek has 820 yards rushing and 17 TDs, and RB/QB Quade Pelton has 331 yards passing, 1072 yards rushing, and 22 TDs on the season.  These three are critical to Cheyenne Wells making a deep run this season.

Mountain Valley was on the ropes entering their final game of the season and need an upset or some help to get into the playoffs.  Mountain Valley pulled the huge upset of Branson/Kim 30-29 to get into the playoffs.  Mountain Valley finished the regular season with a 5-3 record and played against 3 playoff teams going 1-2 in those games.  Mountain Valley defensively has given up 200 points this season which is 8th best in 6-Man.  Offensively Mountain Valley has scored 180 points this season but are now at full strength.  QB Salvador Vigil had a huge game last week passing for 259 yards and 3 TDs in the win.  Look for Vigil to be a critical part of the offense again this week.  RB Elijah Roberts has also been critical to the offense rushing for 881 yards and 11 TDs.  These two are the main weapons for Mountain Valley and are critical for success.

Even though this is the #3 vs #14 matchup I think this could be a much closer game.  Mountain Valley is healthy and showed they can play with anyone pulling the upset last week.  Cheyenne Wells has proven they can also play with anyone losing to #1 Kit Carson by just 8 points.  If Mountain Valley is to pull the upset, they will have to score over 40 points.  Cheyenne Wells is the favorite in this game, and I am picking them to win but Mountain Valley will be a tough test.

#6 Granada (6-3) vs #11 North Park (6-3) 11/1 @1pm

Granada enters the playoffs as the #6 seed.  Granada had a good year and showed that they did not have to rebuild after losing a good senior class.  Granada went 6-3 this year and played against 5 playoff teams going 3-2 in those games.  Granada played well against Kit Carson losing by just 16 points.  Granada defensively has given up 376 points this year which is the 22nd best defense in 6-Man.  Offensively Granada has scored 350 points which is 12th best in 6-Man.  Granada has been led by due it all QB Dominic Coleman who has 1466 yards passing, 1088 yards rushing, and 30 TDs.  He is critical to Granada having success another player to keep an eye on is RB John Hainer who has 489 yards rushing and 12 TDs.

North Park enters the playoffs as the #11 seed.  North Park also had a solid year going 6-3 and playing against 6 playoff teams going 3-3 in those games.  North Park has played tough against nearly every opponent and will be on the hunt for an upset.  Defensively North Park has given up 224 points on defense which is 10th best in 6-Man.  Offensively North Park has scored 391 points which is 10th best in 6-Man.  Offensively North Park is a run first team with RB Destry Schmidt (850 yards and 19 TDs), RB Brock Follett (844 yards and 10 TDs), and Eli Houston (630 yards and 11 TDs) racking up most of the yards.  These three are critical to North Park pulling the upset.

The #6 vs #11 seeds always seem to be where the upsets happen, and this could be the case yet again.  Dominic Coleman will be the main key for Granada to avoid the upset.  If North Park plans to pull the upset expect the main three RBs to have big games.  This should be a really good game and I am going with the North park to pull the upset of Granada.  I expect a very close game and a high scoring game with both teams breaking 35 points.

#7 Branson/Kim (7-1) vs #10 Briggsdale (6-3) 11/2 @11am

Branson/Kim enters the playoffs as the #7 seed and coming off their first loss of the season. Branson/Kim is a great story this season with a huge turn around from the previous year and really looking to make a deep run in the playoffs.  Branson/Kim went 7-1 this season and played against 4 playoff teams going 3-1.  Branson/Kim defensively has given up just 111 points which is best in 6-Man.  Offensively Branson/Kim has scored 402 points this season which 9th best in 6-Man.  Branson/Kim will be looking to bounce back from a tough loss last week.  Offensively Branson/Kim is a run first offense but QB Kelton Davis has shown he can throw and has 317 yards, 6 TDs, and 0 INTs on the season.  The rushing attack is led by Finn Warner 1163 yards rushing and 18 TDs and Teagan Keeler 683 yards and 14 TDs.  Branson/Kim will be facing a high scoring offense and I think the rushing attack will be key for Branson/Kim to move into the quarterfinals.

Briggsdale enters the playoffs as the #10 seed and some momentum after pulling the 41-39 upset of North Park to close out the season.  Briggsdale has a 6-3 record and played against 5 playoff teams going 2-3 in those games.  Briggsdale has some key momentum as they look for the upset.  Briggsdale defensively has given up 358 points which is 20th best in 6-Man.  Offensively Briggsdale has scored 473 points which is 4th best in 6-Man.  This offense can be very high scoring and will be needed for a deep run.  Briggsdale is a pass first offense with QB Tyler Blickem putting up some big numbers 1667 yards passing, 26 TDs, and 5 INTs.  The rushing attack has improved this season with RB Malik Carlson (810 yards rushing and 8 TDs) and Kaleb Brown (517 yards rushing and 11 TDs) putting up big numbers.  One last name to mention is WR Luke Lambertson and he is also key to this offense.

This is my pick for the best game of the first round.  Branson/Kim will be looking to bounce back from the tough loss and get to the quarterfinals.  The rushing attack will be key to Branson/Kim advancing and I think this offense will need at least 35 points to win this game.  Briggsdale has some momentum heading into this matchup and are hoping to pull the upset.  Briggsdale offensively must have a big game from the passing attack but the rushing attack must have success as well.  Briggsdale I think to pull the upset need over 40 points.  I am going with the upset in the game and picking Briggsdale.  This was a tough decision and I think will come down to the wire.

#2 Stratton/Liberty (8-1) vs #15 Walsh (2-6) 11/2 @4pm

Stratton/Liberty enters the playoffs as the #2 seed and the defending state champions.  Stratton/Liberty is full healthy, and it has shown with the massive win last week over Flagler/Hi Plains 67-21.  Stratton/Liberty is 8-1 on the season and played against 5 playoff teams going 4-1 against them.  Stratton/Liberty defensively has given up 226 points which is 12th best in 6-Man.  Offensively Stratton/Liberty has scored 545 points this season which is tied for the best in 6-man and only two teams broke the 500 points mark this season.  Stratton/Liberty is a run first team but also have shown this season they can throw.  QB Zeke Craig has shown improvement this season and has passed for 475 yards and 12 TDs.  The rushing attack is led by Jaret Lichty 1153 yards and 23 TDs on just 59 carries and Trevor Frank 854 yards rushing and 15 TDs.  This offense continues to improve and look for them to really get going.

Walsh enters the playoffs as the #15 seed.  They went 2-6 this season and played a tough schedule that included playing against 6 playoff teams out of 8 games.  Walsh went 0-6 in those games but played close against Eads, Flagler/Hi Plains, and Granada.  Walsh cannot be taken lightly.  Walsh defensively has given up 328 points and will look to stop the run this week. Offensively Walsh has scored 258 points which is 21st best in 6-Man.  Walsh offensively attacks in a balanced manner.  QB Brendan Hodges has 628 yards passing and 13 TDs.  The rushing attack is led by Kevin Rodriquez and Brendan Hodges.  Walsh will need to have huge performances from their key players if they plan to pull the upset.

Stratton/Liberty is the heavy favorite in this game, but Walsh will be on the hunt for the upset.  I am going with Stratton/Liberty in this game due to tradition and their offense being able to score on just about anyone.
