Class 2A Football Quarterfinal Breakdown

A great first round of games and now we move into the quarterfinals.  Good Luck to all teams!

#1 Rifle (10-0) vs #9 Basalt (8-2)

Rifle moved into the Quarterfinals with a solid 48-15 victory over Englewood.  Rifle scored 27 points in the first quarter to take a demanding 27-7 lead.  Rifle never looked back and moved into the Quarterfinals.  Defensively Rifle had a solid day holding Englewood to just 56 yards rushing.  Rifle did give up some yards passing with Englewood throwing for 245 yards.  Rifle did force two turnovers with an INT and a fumble recovery.  Rifle offensively does not have individual stats but we do know their team stats.  Rifle threw for 62 yards and a TD and ran for 337 yards and 5 TDs.  Rifle also had 0 turnovers in the game and did a good job of dominating.  This week Rifle faces Basalt who also likes to throw the ball.  Defensively Rifle must be ready again to face the passing attack.  Offensively look for Rifle ton continue to pound the ball on the ground and look for Levi Warfel to have a big performance.

Basalt moved into the Quarterfinals with a hard fought 13 to 7 upset of #8 Classical Academy.  All points in the game were scored in the first half.  Basalt and TCA both scored a touchdown in the first quarter, but Basalt was able to score the go ahead touchdown in the second quarter and play great defense to lock up the game.  Defensively Basalt played a great game.  Basalt did not give up any yards passing and in fact forced TCA to -6 yards.  Basalt held TCA to just 226 yards rushing on 44 attempts for just 5 yards a carry.  Basalt also forced two fumbles in the game.  Offensively Basalt had 193 yards of total offense.  QB Matty Gillis had 81 yards passing and 2 TDs but also had an INT.  The rushing attack was led by Cole Dombrowski and Rulbe Alvarado.  Basalt did enough offensively to win this game.  This week Basalt faces Rifle and must be ready to stop the run.  Offensively Basalt must be able to produce a bit more offense to try and pull the upset.  These two teams have faced each other before.  Rifle won the contest 21-9 and I expect another great matchup

#4 Delta vs #5 Faith Christian

Delta moved into the Quarterfinals making quick work of Pagosa Springs and winning 44 to 0.  Delta had a 17-point first quarter to jump out to the lead.  Delta then scored 14 more in the second quarter to take the demanding 31 to 0 lead into halftime.  Delta got the running clock going scoring two more times in the third quarter and finishing the game 44 to 0.  Delta defensively played outstanding against the option attack not given up any points.  Delta forced 1 turnover in the game and were led in tackles by Colby Wilson and Nathan Workman.  Offensively Delta had a big day racking up 428 yards of total offense.  The passing attack was led by QB Nolan Bynum who threw just 4 incomplete passes in rout to 174 yards and 2 TDs.  The rushing attack racked up 254 yards and were led by Ku Moo who ran for 174 yards.  Delta had a great game and now face another run heavy team in Faith Christian.  Delta must be ready to stop the run on defense and offensively must have another big day from Nolan Bynum and Ku Moo.

Faith Christian moved into the Quarterfinals finals in a defensive struggle beating Elizabeth 8 to 0.  Faith Christian was able to score on a 38 yards QB run up the middle.  The score would be the only of the game and turned into a defensive struggle.  Defensively Faith Christian held Elizabeth to just 64 yards of total offense.  Defensively this was a great game by Faith Christian, and they forced 4 turnovers in the game.  Offensively Faith Christian did struggle as well with just 154 yards of total offense.  The rushing attack was led by Erick Granados who had 125 yards rushing.  Faith Christian offensively is very one sided this year and must dominate at the line of scrimmage.  Defensively this week Faith Christian faces a balanced offensive attack.  Faith Christian will have to slow down the passing attack of Delta.  Offensively Faith Christian must dominate at the line of scrimmage or this could be a tough offensive game for Faith Christian.

#3 Resurrection Christian vs #6 Platte Valley

Resurrection Christian moved into the Quarterfinals with a solid 46-14 victory over La Junta.  Resurrection Christian had a steady attack in the game.  At halftime Resurrection Christian was leading 25 to 0.  Resurrection Christian kept the attack up scoring 14 more in the 3rd quarter and putting the game away.  Resurrection Christian defensively did a great job in the first half not allowing any points and forcing 5 turnovers in the game.  Resurrection Christian was led in tackles by AJ Goldfain and Tanner Applebee.  Offensively Resurrection Christian racked up 348 yards of total offense.  The passing attack was led by Buck Coors who threw for 122 yards and 4 TDs.  The rushing attack racked up 226 yards and was led by Cade Dunlap and Tanner Applebee.  This week Resurrection Christian faces a balanced offensive attack and must be ready defensively.  Offensively Resurrection Christian will need a big game from Buck Coors.  This will be another tough game for Resurrection Christian.

Platte Valley moved into the Quarterfinals with a solid 38 to 6 victory over Bennett.  Platte Valley scored 28 points in the first half and cruised to the 38-6 victory.  Platte Valley defensively was able to take care of business against the run.  Offensively Platte Valley had success rushing the ball.  No stats were posted for this game.  Defensively this week Platte Valley must be ready to stop Buck Coors and the rushing attack of Resurrection Christian.  Offensively look for Josh Yancy to have a big game for Platte Valley.  This should be a very good game and I bet a lower scoring game.

#2 Sterling vs #7 Lamar

Sterling cruised into the Quarterfinals with a 56-14 victory over Moffat County.  Sterling scored 50 points in the first half to get the running clock and pull their starters.  Sterling gave up 6 points in the second quarter and 8 in the fourth but overall dominated defensively.  Sterling gave up just 168 yards of total offense and limited the rushing attack of Moffat County.  Offensively did what they needed to do, and I am guessing Brock Shalla had a big day for Sterling.  No stats were posted for Sterling.  This week Sterling must be ready on defense.  They are facing the high-powered offense of Lamar.  Defensively they will need to be ready to contain Zane Rankin and force Lamar to beat them with the other weapons.  Offensively Sterling will face a tough defense as well and will need Brock Shalla to have a big game.

Lamar moved into the Quarterfinals with the hard fought 21 to 7 victory over Eaton.  Lamar was able to get their first playoff win in 24 years.  Lamar defensively had an excellent scheme and held Eaton to just 7 points.  Lamar forced 2 turnovers in the game one a fumble recovered by Blake Buxton and a INT by Blake Buxton.  Lamar was led in tackles by Gabe Estrada and Blake Buxton.  Offensively Lamar had a solid day racking up 475 yards of total offense but had 3 INTs.  The passing attack at times had success with Zane Rankin throwing for 152 yards but as mentioned he threw 3 INTs.  The rushing attack had the most success with 300 yards racked up.  Walker Kee and Jesus Reyes had big days for the rushing attack.  This week Lamar faces Sterling.  Defensively Lamar must be on top of their game and must focus on Brock Shalla.  Offensively Zane Rankin must bounce back but also look for Walker Kee and Jesus Reyes to continue to have big games.
