Class 2A Football Semifinal Breakdown
After a very fun and exciting week of Football we are down to the final 4 teams. All 4 teams fought hard to get here and we will see who comes out on top.
#4 Delta (10-1) vs #9 Basalt (9-2)
Delta moved into the Semifinals with a crazy shootout and a close win over Faith Christian. Delta jumped out to the early 7-0 lead but then both teams scored 21 points in the second quarter to make the score 28-21 heading into halftime. The second half would be very interesting as well with Faith Christian scoring 7 and Delta scoring 6 making the score 34-28 and making for an exciting 4th quarter. In the 4th quarter Faith Christian would drive down the field to start and punch a TD across and make the extra point to make the score 35-34. Delta then started a drive of their own and were able to get into field goal range. Special Teams player of the year from the Western Slope Ku Moo would come up clutch with a 40 yards field goal and make the score 37-35. Delta would hold off Faith Christian for the remaining time and win 37-35. Delta offensively had a great performance from QB Nolan Bynum who threw for 358 yards and 4 TDs. Ku Moo also ran the ball well rushing for 78 yards. WR Nahtan Workman and Hunter Hughes also came to play. Defensively Delta did struggle stopping Faith Christian but made the stops when it mattered. Delta now must focus on a balanced offensive attack and a defense who may be playing their best football of the season.
Basalt pulled the biggest upset so far of the playoffs shocking #1 Rifle 21-14. Rifle jumped out to the early 7-0 lead, but Basalt answered by scoring 6 in the second quarter. The third quarter saw Rifle score again, but Basalt also got a score on the board to even the game up at 14. No points would be scored in the fourth quarter and overtime would be needed. In the first OT no points where scored and a second would be needed. Basalt was able to get a TD in the second OT and win the game 21-14 to upset the #1 team in the state. Offensively Basalt was limited but a few big plays got them the points they needed. QB Matty Gillis had 63 yards passing and 1 TD and RB Rulbe Alvarado had 24 yards rushing. Basalt defensively slowed down one of the best rushing attacks and forced 3 turnovers as well. Sam Sherry, Rulbe Alvarado, and Jose Castorena had huge performances for the defense. Basalt must now focus on a balanced offensive attack and defensively will look to spark the offense more this game.
These two teams have meet before with Delta winning the first meeting 35-6. Basalt showed how tough it’s to beat a team twice in the game season and will be a tough task for Delta this week. Basalt will need their defense to anchor this team if their offense struggles again. Delta offensively must look to score but look for Delta defense to really come to play. This should be a great game and look for whichever team makes the least number of mistakes to win this game.
#2 Sterling (10-1) vs #3 Resurrection Christian (10-1)
Sterling moved into the semifinals with the 40-0 victory over Lamar. Sterling came to play scoring 25 points in the first half and jumping out to a commanding lead. The second half would stay the same and Lamar would cruise into the semifinals. Offensively we know Brock Shalla scored at least 3 TDs in the game. He is the key to the offense of Sterling having success. Defensively Sterling shutdown, a very good offensive team. Sterling limited Lamar to just 114 yards of total offense. Sterling also forced 3 turnovers in the game and really dominated from beginning to end. Sterling now shifts focus to Resurrection Christian and offensively must be prepared to face a defense that is also one of the best in 2A. Defensively Sterling will look to limit QB Buck Coors and this defense will look to show why they are one of the best.
Resurrection Christian moved into the semifinals with a tough 20-12 victory over Platte Valley. Resurrection Christian got on the board early scoring 7 points in the first quarter and limiting Platte Valley. Resurrection Christian and Platte Valley both added 6 in the second quarter, but Resurrection Christian took the 13 to 6 lead into halftime. Platte Valley would get things going with a quick score in the third quarter making the score 13-12. Resurrection Christian would then add a TD in the fourth quarter and walk away with the tough 20-12 win. Resurrection Christian defensively forced 5 turnovers in the game and 7 sacks. Resurrection Christian showed why their defense is regarded as one of the top 3 in 2A. Offensively QB Buck Coors led the team with 65 yards passing, 89 yards rushing and 1 TD. Cade Bunlap and Sawyer Shepherd would also add scores in the game. This week Resurrection Christian will face one of the best defenses and look for QB Buck Coors to try and have a big game. Defensively Resurrection Christian will focus on stopping QB Brock Shalla.
This I think will be a great game. Resurrection Christian offensively must have a big-time performance from Buck Coors and defensively must be ready to stop a balanced offensive attack. Sterling offensively will turn to QB Brock Shalla to lead the team and defensively look for Sterling to play top notch defense. These teams faced each other before but was the beginning of the season but Sterling won 21-14 in OT. I have a feeling we will see a very similar score once again.
