Class 2A Football State Championship Breakdown

East Colorado vs West Colorado in what should be a great game!  We are down to the final two teams and both had difficult roads to get here.  This year Class 2A has been one of the most unpredictable and we finally have reached the end of a great season.  Remember with Class 2A it’s played on a neutral field at CSU-Pueblo!

#2 Sterling vs #4 Delta

Sterling moved into the State Championship beating Resurrection Christian 21 to 14.  Sterling had to beat a team they had faced earlier in the season.  Sterling was down early in the game trailing 7 to 0 after the first quarter.  Sterling answered with 14 points of their own to take a 14 to 7 lead.  Sterling would score another 7 points right after halftime to go up 21 to 7.  Sterling would give up another 7 in the third quarter, but their defense stood strong the rest of the game and Sterling would move into the state championship.  Sterling defensively held Resurrection Christian to just 54 yards rushing but did give up 160 yards passing.  Sterling did force 2 turnovers in the game both INTs and had a defensive TD by Brock Burkholder.  Sterling also had 7 sacks in the game.  Tackles wise Sterling was led by Brady Albrandt and Jaxon Mccracken.  Sterling offensively also struggled running the football racking up just 76 yards rushing.  Brock Shalla had a solid day passing for 176 yards and 2 TDs.  Sterling has not lost to a Colorado team this season and their lone loss is to a top ranked Nebraska team.  Sterling this year has relied on their defense and they have carried them far this season.  Offensively Brock Shalla has led the show and Conner Polenz and Drew Brock have pitched in on the ground.  This week Sterling defense will be facing a very good offensive team.  Sterling will focus on stopping the pass this week and will look to force some turnovers.  Offensively Sterling is facing a much-improved Delta defense.  Sterling will look to their senior leaders to step up and lead this team.

Delta moved into the state championship beating Basalt 17 to 6.  Delta beat a team twice in the same season which is not season.  Delta opened up to a quick 10 to 0 in the 1st quarter.  Delta would hold that lead until the 3rd quarter when Basalt would get 6 points on the board.  Delta defensively would hold Basalt to just those 6 points while Delta offense would add 7 more to seal the game and lock up Delta place in the State Championship.  Delta defensively played one of their best game of the season holding Basalt to just 151 yards of total offense.  Delta would force 5 turnovers in the game all 5 were INTs.  Delta also had 5 sacks in the game.  Tackles wise Delta was led by Colby Wilson and Brandon Butler.  Delta offensively had a decent day.  The rushing game racked up 118 yards and were led by Ku Moo who had 69 yards rushing.  The passing attack was led by Nolan Bynum who had 180 yards passing and 2 TDs.  Delta also had 2 turnovers and must fix those mistakes heading into next weeks game.  Delta this season has been very consistent their lone loss is to Rifle who was the #1 overall seed.  Delta has won both shootouts and defensive games.  This week Delta defense will be facing another top QB who can both pass and run the ball effectively.  Delta defense must step up this week again and force a few turnovers.  Offensively Delta must take care of the football and QB Nolan Bynum must have his best game of the season.  Delta will be facing in my opinion the best defense in Class 2A and must come to play.

This should be a very good game and I think a very defensive game.  I don’t see either team’s offense really having breakout performances.  I could see neither team breaking the 28 points mark.  Both teams have really improved defensively this season with Sterling having one of the top defenses all year and Delta defense really improving as the season has gone one.  Offensively both teams have also improved and both teams rely heavily on their QBs.  Turnovers and field position will be the difference in this game.  This was a tough prediction and I am going with Sterling in this game.  I think this will be a very close game and I think Sterling defensively has one a top defense and will help win this game.  Good Luck to both teams!
