Class 3A Girls Basketball Sweet 16 Predictions
A few upsets in the First Round create a few Cinderella teams hoping to punch their ticket to the Great 8. I am expecting some very close game in the Sweet 16 and interested to see who moves into the next round. Good Luck to all teams!
Playoff Prediction Record: 7-1
Missed Grand Valley over Pagosa Springs
#1 Vanguard over #16 Lamar
Lamar moved into the Sweet 16 with a 37 to 23 victory over Basalt. Lamar had an 11-2 first quarter and an 11-5 4th quarter to pull away from Basalt. Lamar played tough defense in the game and proved to be the difference. Lamar now focus on League rival Vanguard and will try and pull the upset. Vanguard enters the playoffs with a 13-0 record and a first-place finish in the Tri-Peaks. Vanguard played well during league play including solid wins over St. Mary’s, Ellicott, and Lamar. Vanguard and Lamar did play each other on 2/22 with Vanguard winning 67 to 32. I expect a closer game this time around but I am still going with Vanguard over Lamar.
#8 Brush over #24 Grand Valley
Grand Valley moved into the sweet 16 pulling off the 47 to 44 upset of Pagosa Springs. Grand Valley is now on a 2 game winning streak and looking to play Cinderella and move into the Great 8. Grand Valley must refocus now for their game against Brush. Brush enters the playoffs with a 11-3 record and 3rd place finish in the Patriot League. Brush 3 losses are to Holyoke (#1 2A), Platte Valley, and Eaton. All teams are top 6 seeds and Brush played tough in all game. Brush will be looking to move into the Great 8 again like the did last season. Brush this time won’t be the underdog and is the favorite and will be looking to hold off the upset. I am going with Brush over Grand Valley.
#5 Delta over #12 Moffat County
Moffat County moved into the sweet 16 with a solid 68 to 51 victory over Manitou Springs. Moffat County had a big first half to build their lead and cruised to the 17-point win over Manitou Springs. Moffat County now look forward to a rematch with league rival Delta. Delta enters the playoffs with a 12-2 record and winners of the Western Slope League. Delta loses are to Centauri and Grand Junction Central (4A). Delta played well to close out their year beating Grand Valley and Fruita Monument (5A). Delta will hope to snag their second win over Moffat County this season. Delta beat Moffat County 58 to 41 on February 20th. I expect a closer game but Delta is my pick over Moffat County.
#4 Lutheran over #13 Resurrection Christian
Resurrection Christian moved into the Sweet 16 with the 43 to 29 victory over Peak to Peak. Resurrection Christian had a big first half outscoring Peak to Peak 20 to 10 and that proved to be the difference. Lutheran enters the playoffs with a 12-1 record and winners of the Metro League. Lutheran lone loss of the season is to 5A Chaparral by 6. Lutheran will be looking to move into the Great 8. Lutheran ended the season on a 6-game winning streak and will look to avoid the upset. I am going with Lutheran over Resurrection Christian. I think Lutheran defense is key to winning against a young Resurrection Christian team.
#2 Centauri over #15 Coal Ridge
Coal Ridge moved into the sweet 16 with a 59 to 37 win over Ellicott. Coal Ridge had a dominate second half outscoring Ellicott 39 to 16. Coal Ridge had big performances by Jackie Camunez and Taylor Wiescamp. Coal Ridge will now look for an upset of the #2 team. Centauri enters the playoffs with a 13-1 record and winners of the Intermountain League. Centauri lone loss of the season is to #1 Vanguard. Centauri ended the season on a 6-game winning streak including solid wins over Pagosa Springs and Sanford. I am going with Centauri over Coal Ridge. I think Coal Ridge must have big games from Camunez and Wiescamp but Centauri defensive pressure will be key in this game. I have Centauri pulling away in the second half.
#7 University over #10 The Academy
The Academy moved into the sweet 16 with a dominate win over Valley 67 to 32. The Academy played a dominate gam with two scorers over 20 points. The Academy will be looking for a trip to the Elite 8 something they did not do last season. University enters the playoffs with a 10-4 record and second place finish in the Patriot League. University started the season slow going 1-3 to start the season. University played well at the end of the year winning 6 straight games including solid wins over Eaton and The Academy. This is a rematch of the game played on 2/27 which same University win 65 to 52. I expect a much closer game this time around and I think this is the best matchup in the Sweet 16. I am sticking with University over The Academy. I think University is playing their best basketball and win a hard fought game over the Academy.
#6 Eaton over #11 St. Mary’s
St. Mary’s moved into the Sweet 16 following the 52 to 37 victory over Colorado Academy. St. Mary’s had a dominate 2nd and 3rd quarter to pull away and secure the victory. St. Mary’s is looking for another deep playoff run but are the underdogs this time around. Eaton enters the playoffs with a 10-2 record and 3rd place finish in the Patriot League. Eaton two losses are to Platte Valley and University. Eaton ended the season with a solid win over Brush and will hope to use that momentum to avoid the upset. I am going with Eaton over St. Mary’s. This is another great matchup in the sweet 16.
#3 Platte Valley over #19 Sterling
Sterling moved into the sweet 16 following the 3-point upset of Kent Denver 49 to 46. Sterling is another Cinderella team looking to punch their ticket to the Elite 8. Standing in their way is league rival Platte Valley and is a rematch from earlier in the year. Platte Valley enters the playoffs with a 12-1 record and winners of the tough Patriot League. Platte Valley lone loss of the season comes to Vanguard back in January. Platte Valley and Sterling meet in early February with Platte Valley winning 63 to 47. I expect another close game especially with Sterling playing much better towards the end of this season. I am going with Platte Valley over Sterling but should be a great game.
