Class 2A Football Quarterfinal Prediction Breakdown
Playoff Football Time!! The real works begins now. Some great Quarterfinal matchups and this is where teams really get tested. My game of the week is #3 Classical Academy vs #6 Severance. Good Luck to all teams this weekend.
#1 Eaton over #9 Elizabeth
Eaton cruised into the Quarterfinals with a 45 to 6 win over Kent Denver. Eaton jumped out to a quick 38 to 0 lead at halftime before pushing to the Mercy rule in the 3rd quarter. Eaton defensively pitched a shutout till the 4th quarter when the starters were already out. Eaton forced 4 turnovers in the game and 2 sacks. The defense also scored a TD. Offensively Eaton had a solid game producing 267 yards of total offense. QB Walker Martin had a solid day and so did RB Ryan Dirksen. Eaton now looks to move into the Semifinals.
Elizabeth moved into the Quarterfinals with a hard fought 17-0 win over Bayfield in the first round. Elizabeth played outstanding defense and that powered them to the upset win. Elizabeth defensively was on lock down and forced Bayfield into mistakes. Elizabeth forced 6 turnovers in the game and proved to be the difference. Elizabeth offensively did have 1 turnover but had enough offense to win the game. Elizabeth now looks for another upset to advance to the Semifinals.
I am going with Eaton over Elizabeth. These two teams meet during the regular season on 9/10. Eaton won that contest 31-7. Eaton forced Elizabeth to throw the ball a lot more and that seemed to be the difference in that game. Elizabeth this time around I am guessing would like to get their offense going. Elizabeth must run the ball for more than 60 yards and must take care of the football. Eaton this time around will turn to their defense yet again and look to have the same success running the ball as they did the first time. I am going with Eaton over Elizabeth because I believe Eaton defense is the difference. I think Eaton physical defense and dominate run game are to much. I do think it will be a bit closer than the first time around.
#4 Delta over #12 University
Delta rolled into the Quarterfinals with a 45 to 14 win over Alamosa in the first round. Delta took a 21 to 7 lead into halftime. Delta then outscored Alamosa 24 to 7 in the second half to get the win. Delta defensively shut the Alamosa run game down holding them to under 50 yards rushing. Delta also had 2 interceptions and a blocked punt that kept Alamosa pinned deep on their side of the field. Offensively Delta was able to run the ball effectively rushing for 359 yards. RB Timothy Horn and RB Damien Gallegos both had big days for the Delta offense. Delta now hits the road and looks to advance into the Semifinals yet again.
University moved into the Quarterfinals with an upset win over #5 Moffat County 28 to 14. University had a great game plan and was effective and allowed them to pull the upset. Defensively University had a solid game plan and held Moffat County to just 223 yards of offense. University also forced 2 interceptions and forced Moffat County to just 4 completed passes. Offensively University was effective racking up 345 yards of total offense. University was powered by QB Greg Garza who had 298 yards of total offense. University will now look to pick up their second upset of the playoffs against another Western Slope Team.
I am going Delta over University. These teams have 1 common opponent in Moffat County. Delta beat Moffat County 17 to 14 and University beat Moffat County 28 to 14. This is going to be a battle. I believe both teams can win this game and I expect this to be less than a 10-point spread. University must have another big game from QB Greg Garza and defensively must stop the run. Delta must keep University QB in check and must also have a big day from their Freshman QB. I think this game is a defensive slug fest and I don’t expect many points. I am going with Delta over University, and I think this come down to a key stop by Delta defense.
#2 Resurrection Christian over #7 Brush
Resurrection Christian advanced into the Quarterfinals with a 56-15 win over La Junta. Resurrection Christian built an early lead in this game. Resurrection Christian took a 49 to 15 lead into halftime and got the mercy rule going with about 7 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Resurrection Christian defensively did give up some early scores but were dominate in this game holding La Junta to under 175 yards of total offense. Resurrection Christian defense also forced 4 INTs, 4 Sacks, and 5 TFL. Offensively Resurrection Christian ran wild racking up 587 yards of total offense led by the rushing attack. QB Eddie Lemos and RB Cade Dunlap both eclipsed the 100-yard mark in the game. Resurrection Christian now looks to advanced to the Semifinals against a physical Brush team.
Brush advanced into the Quarterfinals with a 43-23 win over Basalt in the first round. Brush built an early 23-3 lead heading into halftime. Basalt would be the only team to score in the 3rd quarter, but Brush was able to get things going again in the 4th quarter. Brush would outscore Basalt 20 to 13 in the 4th quarter to pull away and grab the win. Defensively Brush did give up some yards allowing over 300 yards but Brush had a bend but not break mentality holding Basalt to just 23 points. Brush also forced 2 turnovers in the game. Offensively Brush racked up 363 yards of total offense. QB Alejando Maltos-Garcia had a huge game as did RB Cesar Hinojos. Brush will now look to upset the #2 team.
I am going with Resurrection Christian over Brush. These teams have two common opponents in Severance and Sterling. Brush went 1-1 losing to Severance 20-7. Resurrection Christian went 2-0 and beat Severance 24-14. If scores indicate anything I think this will be a very close game. Brush to pull the upset must stop the run and force Resurrection Christian to throw the ball. Brush offensively must also have a big day running the ball. Resurrection Christian can find success with their rushing attack and their stout defense. I am going with Resurrection Christian over Brush because of their defense. I think they are one of the top units in 2A and proves to be the difference. I think this is a very close game and I think is less than a 14-point game.
#3 Classical Academy over #6 Severance
Classical Academy blitzed into the Quarterfinals defeating Northfield 42-6. TCA made quick work of Northfield jumping out to a 42-0 lead by halftime. TCA was able to get rest for their starters and key work for their younger kids. Defensively TCA was dominate pitching the shutout until Northfield scored on the backups. TCA forced 1 turnover, had 6.5 sacks, and had a defensive TD. Offensively TCA had a solid game putting up 295 yards of total offense. QB Sam Guilez and RB Cade Palmer were the leaders on offense. TCA now face a very tough defensive team in Severance.
Severance moved into the quarterfinals with a 35 to 7 win over Platte Valley. Severance had a huge 2nd quarter and that was the difference in the game. Severance scored 22 points in the 2nd quarter and helped build a 30-0 lead heading into halftime. Severance would only score once more but moved into the quarterfinals. Defensively Severance played outstanding holding Platte Valley scoreless until the 4th quarter. Severance forced 4 turnovers in the game, 9 sacks, and 18 TFL. Offensively Severance also had a solid game racking up 321 yards of total offense. QB Nolan Hertzke and RB Jake Shorb led the way. Severance will now look for their first ever visit into the Semifinals.
I am going with Classical Academy over Severance. These teams have no common opponents, but I do think this is going to be the best game in the Quarterfinals. Classical Academy has question marks they did not play the toughest schedule with their best win coming over Elizabeth 42-13. I do think for Severance to pull the upset it will be because of their defense. Severance defense I consider a top 3 defense in Class 2A. If Severance defense can contain the TCA offense, then it could be a very close game. TCA must also play outstanding defense. I think TCA must have a big game from RB Cade Palmer and QB Sam Guilez must take care of the ball. I am going with TCA over Severance in a close game.
