MileHigh Prep Reports Top 10 Games of the Week (Class 2A and 1A)
We are doing something a bit different this season and looking at the top 10 games of the week. These games are picked by MileHigh Prep Report and ranking does not matter. We will separate into two classes and go from there for the first few weeks. If there are not 10 games that catch are eye, we will lower the number of games. Good Luck this season to all teams! Class 2A
#3 Eaton at #9 Severance (3A)
Last year this was a critical matchup in Class 2A this year it’s just a big game with RPI on the line. Both teams enter at 2-1 and both look to move to 3-1. I think this game turns into a defensive slug fest and both QBs will look to be difference makers in this game. Should be a fun physical football game.
#9 Elizabeth at University
This is a key RPI matchup! Elizabeth will travel to face University and should be a good game. Elizabeth is coming off a loss to The Academy and will look to bounce back against University. Elizabeth will look to limit the rushing attack this week. University is 0-2 and coming off a bye week. University is looking for that key win and an upset of Elizabeth could be it. University hopes to get their offensive attack going after just 6 points in two games.
#5 The Academy vs D’Evelyn
The Academy made big waves after upsetting Elizabeth last week and now look to solidify their spot in the top 5 with a win against D’Evelyn. The Academy was balanced in their offensive attack and defensively limited what Elizabeth did on the ground. D’Evelyn will enter this matchup coming off a solid win over Faith Christian. D’Evelyn will now look for a win over The Academy. D’Evelyn will need to play disciplined on both sides of the ball to pull the upset.
#2 Delta vs Rifle
This was a league game a season ago but now is a non-league game with plenty to prove for both teams. Delta is off to a great start this season and picked up an impressive win over 3A Palisade last week. Delta offensively did not skip a beat without QB Ty Reed, but their defense must improve stopping the run heading into this matchup. Rifle is 1-1 on the season and come off a tough loss to Glenwood Springs (3A). Rifle will be looking for the upset and stopping the run must be the priority. Offensively Rifle must also control the line of scrimmage. This game will be won in the trenches.
Alamosa at Pagosa Springs
This was also a league game a season ago but both teams have moved into different leagues but this is a very important RPI for both teams. Alamosa enters at 1-2 and come off a big loss to TCA 42-14. Alamosa must limit turnovers offensively and must find a way to get the passing attack going. Defensively Alamosa must be able to stop the run and force Pagosa Springs into a pass heavy offense. Pagosa Springs enters at 0-3 but they have improved every week. Pagosa Springs nearly upset Florence last week falling by just 3 points. Pagosa Springs must be able to limit the passing attack to find any success against Alamosa. This is a very important game for both teams and their hopes for the playoffs.
Bennett at Banning Lewis (1A) (Saturday)
A very interesting matchup here. Bennett enters this matchup at 2-0 and are coming off a bye week. Bennett is looking for that key win and it could get it here on the road at Banning Lewis. Banning Lewis enters at 2-1 coming off a tough 49-0 loss. Banning Lewis must take care of the ball better as they had 5 turnovers in the game. This game will also be won at the line of scrimmage if Banning Lewis cannot stop the run Bennett will have a big day. Look for Banning Lewis to also get their offense rolling again.
Coal Ridge at Salida
I think a very underrated matchup between two teams that are off to surprising starts. Coal Ridge is 2-1 to start the season and coming off back-to-back wins. Their rushing attack has powered them so far this season and they hope to keep it going. Salida is 1-2 but they played a top ranked Buena Vista very tough. Salida picked up their first win of the season on playoff hopeful Rye 24-14. Salida has played well on defense this season and look for their running defense to try and limit the Coal Ridge attack.
Burlington (1A) at Lamar
Another very interesting matchup. Burlington hits the road to face Lamar. Burlington moved into the win column last week defeating Goodland KS. Burlington now looks to get to .500 before moving into league play. Lamar is 1-1 currently and this could be the key win Lamar needs to push for the playoffs. Lamar had a bye last week so we will see what preparations they have made for this game. Should be a good game with playoff implications on the line.
Kent Denver at Faith Christian
An old rivalry game between two old league foes. Kent Denver makes the trip to Faith Christian and should be a good matchup. Kent Denver enters at 1-1 and come off a win over Highland last week. Kent Denver also nearly upset Platte Valley in the season opener. Look for Kent Denver to keep the offense going. Faith Christian is 1-1 as well and coming off a 40-7 loss to D’Evelyn. Faith Christian will look to adjust after the loss and look to get their offense going. This is another important RPI game.
Fort Lupton at Valley
Another intriguing matchup pits Fort Lupton vs Valley. Valley is 0-2 currently and they look to bounce back after the 1 point loss to Manitou Springs. Valley is desperate for that first win and they will face another passing offense this week. Fort Lupton is off to a surprise 2-1 start. Fort Lupton is coming off a 45-6 win over Weld Central last week. If Fort Lupton can move into league play at 3-1 they will give themselves a shot at the playoffs. This is a very important game for both teams.
Class 1A
#6 Wiggins at #8 Platte Valley (2A) (Saturday)
A great top 10 matchup kicks things off in Class 1A. Wiggins travels to face Platte Valley. Wiggins enters the matchup at 2-1 and they are coming off a big win over Rocky Ford last week. Wiggins is looking for another key win over a 2A opponent. Wiggins will look for their offense to have a big game. Platte Valley enters the matchup at 2-1 and coming off a tough 44-0 loss to Eaton. Platte Valley will look to fix the mistakes defensively and get their QB Howdy Johnson going. This should be a good matchup.
#7 Yuma vs Brush
Two very physical teams meet up in this matchup. Yuma enters at 3-0 and come off a 49-0 win over Banning Lewis. Defensively Yuma forced 5 turnovers in the game and set the ton for their offense. Yuma will face a different offensive team this week in Brush and must play physical at the line of scrimmage. Brush enters the matchup at 1-1 and come off a bye week. Brush played Fort Morgan last and won 26-14. Brush will look to dominate the line of scrimmage and limit the rushing attack of Yuma. This will be a very physical game.
#2 Buena Vista vs Gunnison
Another great game in Class 1A and a big-league game as well. Buena Vista hosts Gunnison to kick off league play. Buena Vista enters at 2-0 and come off a hard-fought win over Centauri 24-18. Buena Vista has been challenged in both of their first two games and their defense has been key to their success. Offensively look for Buena Vista to get things going. Gunnison enters the matchup at 1-2 and come off back-to-back losses to Alamosa and Monte Vista. Gunnison will look to set the tone at the line of scrimmage. Gunnison must defend Buena Vista dual threat QB. This I think could be a very underrated matchup.
Center at Rye
A very underrated matchup here. Center at Rye has playoff implications written all of it. Center enters the matchup at 2-1 and came from behind to beat Peyton last week. Center offensively has been very effective thru the air. Defensively they have made key adjustments in the second half to grab wins. Rye enters the matchup at 1-1 and they fell to Salida last week 24-14. Rye this week must be able to stop the pass. Rye also must control the line of scrimmage for their offense to get going. As mentioned, I think this game has playoff implications all over it.
Montezuma-Cortez at North Fork
A very intriguing matchup between Montezuma-Cortez and North Fork. Montezuma-Cortez is off to a solid 2-1 start with a pair of wins over NM teams. Cortez will be looking for a key win against a Colorado team. Cortez must be able to stop the run to find success this week. North Fork enters the matchup at 1-1 and come off a 28-0 win over 2A Grand Valley. North Fork was able to get the offensive attack going and played lights out defense last week. North Fork will again need their offense to get going to try and grab another win over a 2A opponent.
#10 Estes Park vs Denver Christian
Estes Park hosts Denver Christian in battle to improve heading into week 4. Estes Park is 2-0 to start the season and ranked for the first time. Estes Park has a quality win over 2A Wellington and now look to move to 3-0. Estes Park must take care of the ball but look for their passing attack to lead the way. Denver Christian enters their first season of 11 man at 1-2. Denver Christian will look for a key win before heading into league play. Denver Christian must find a way to limit the passing attack.
Denver West at Flatirons Academy
An interesting matchup between 2A Denver West and 1A Flatirons Academy. Flatirons Academy enters the matchup a 2-1 and come off a forfeit win over Jefferson. Flatirons Academy will look to grab a key win before heading into league play. Flatirons Academy must get the rushing attack going to find success. Denver West enters the matchup a 1-1 and they come off a hard-fought loss to 3A Lincoln. Denver West will look to bounce back but defensively must be able to stop the run. This is a very important RPI game for both teams.
#4 Wray at Ellicott
This is an interesting matchup to see how both teams bounce back from a loss. Wray picked up their first loss of the season falling to Scott KS 28-0. Wray will look to get their offense going after the tough loss. Ellicott will also look to bounce back after back-to-back losses. Ellicott hopes to have figured out their offensive woes and get going.
Trinidad at Peyton
A very interesting matchup here. Peyton hosts Trinidad in a battle of two 0-2 teams. Peyton is 0-2 and I am sure that surprises a few teams. Peyton lost last week to Center last week after holding a 14-point lead. Peyton will look to get back into the win column this week and look for their offense to be the difference. Trinidad is 0-2 and they hope their bye week allowed them to fix their defensive woes. Trinidad is desperate for a win before moving into league play.
Middle Park at Arvada (2A)
I think a underrated matchup here. Middle Park is 1-2 on the season and come off hard fought losses to Estes Park and Steamboat Springs. Middle Park is looking for that key win and will hope to knock off Arvada. Arvada is 1-2 and they come off a 19-13 OT loss to Englewood. Arvada is much improved this season and getting a win over Middle Park could be an important spark heading into league play.
