Class 2A Volleyball Weekly Preview-Week 9 by Tayler Rocha

We continue to use the CHSAA Seeding Index to preview the top 12 teams. This week we also look at the bubble teams who are fighting to get into regionals at the end. Good Luck to all teams this week.

#1 Wiggins

With a 14-2 overall record and a 5-1 league record, Wiggins is currently the top team in the CHSSA seeding index and are 3rd in the Lower Platte league. The Tigers continue to bounce back from their loss to Merino a couple of weeks ago, and defeated Holyoke and Briggsdale 3-2 this last week. They have five games lift on their regular season schedule, and will face Limon this week on 10/17. Stat leaders for the Tigers are Taelynn Epple with 27 blocks, Tyleigh Fehseke with 27 serving aces and 206 kills, Kennedy Kerr with 126 digs and 426 assists.

#2 Rye

The Thunderbolts are 1st on the Santa Fe league with an 11-0 league record and are 15-1 overall. The previous week of play saw Rye defeat Swink 3-2, Hoehne 3-0, and Swallows Charter Academy 3-0. They have five games left on the regular season schedule, and this week will face Fowler on 10/12, and Del Norte on 10/14. Top players from Rye are Isabella Bond with 52 total blocks, Jaklyn Newitt with 67 serving aces and 234 assists, Desiree Ruiz with 267 digs, and Jordan Holgerson with 119 kills.

#3 Sedgwick County

The Cougars are 4th in the Lower Platte with a 4-4 league record and 12-4 overall. They lost to Merino this week but were able to beat Wray 3-0. They are six games left in the regular season and will be facing Fleming on 10/12, Akron on 10/13, and Yuma on 10/17. Top players from the Cougars are Abigail Dille with 47 total blocks, Keyana Ehnes with 32 serving aces, Lainee Nein with 245 digs and 199 kills, and Ryen Carlson with 299 assists

#4 Mancos

Sitting 1st in the San Juan Bason League, Mancos has a 9-0 league record and are 15-1 overall. In the previous week of play, the Bluejays defeated Ignacio 3-1 and Ridgway in a double header both 3-0. With six games left in the season, this week they will face Norwood on 10/12, and Telluride on 10/17 to get to a five-game win streak. Top players from Mancos are Haylie Higgins with 51 total blocks, Aysia Mathews with 46 serving aces and 385 assists, and Teya Yeomans with 174 digs and 254 kills.

#5 Front Range Christian

With an overall record of 18-2, Front range Christian is sitting in 1st in the Mile High League with an 8-0 league record. This last week in play, the Falcons defeated Highland and Heritage Christian 3-0 and Gilpin County 3-2 to get to their 10 game in streak. They have three games left on the schedule and will face Rocky Mountain Lutheran on 10/23, SkyView Academy on 10/24, and Union Colony Prep on 10/26. Stat leaders for the Falcons are Skylar Anglada with 47 total blocks, Allie Howard with 41 serving aces, Hannah Keyfauver with 402 digs, Emma Bolz with 544 assists, and Eadlin Hoff with 184 kills.

#6 Vail Christian

The Saints are currently 1st in the Western Slope League with an 11-2 overall record and 9-0 in league play.  Vail Christian were the victors this previous week against Hayden and Soroco 3-0 to get to their 10 game win streak.  They still have 8 games left on the schedule and will face North Park on 10/17. Leading the Saints in stats are Hannah Leonard with 19 total blocks, Logan Nobrega with 25 serving aces and 201 assists, Jessie Allen with 185 digs, and Mary McClarrinon with 95 kills.  

#7 Plateau Valley

Plateau Valley sits currently with a 14-2 overall record and are 9-2 in league play. This leaves them in 3rd in the Western Slope League. During the previous week of play, the Cowboys defeated Soroco 3-0. They have seven games left on the regular season schedule and will face Rangely on 10/13 and De Beque on 10/18. Top performers for Plateau Valley are Meloni Miller with 18 total blocks, 62 serving aces, and 365 assists, Sierra Piland with 144 digs, and Emaline Ealey with 182 kills.

#8 Fowler

Fowler is on a three game win streak after beating Swallows Charter Academy and Walsenburg 3-0 this week to give them a 9-2 league record, a 12-4 overall record and 2nd place in the Sante Fe league. The Grizzlies have four games left in the regular season and will be facing Rye on 10/12, and Hoehne on 10/19. Stat leaders for the Grizzlies are Madison Porto with 16 total blocks, Kory Pieper with 38 serving aces, Randi Maestas with 102 digs, Syriah Alvarez with 198 assists, and Lawren Johnson with 94 kills.

#9 Meeker

The 2nd place team in the Western Slope League, Meeker is 10-1 in league play and are 11-5 overall. The cowboys were able to beat West Grand with last week 3-0 to get to their five game win streak. With three games remaining in the regular season, The Cowboys will face North Park on 10/13, and Vail Mountain on 10/17. Top players for Meeker are Reese Clatterbaugh with 42 total blocks and 40 serving aces. Taylor Garcia with 520 digs, Ellie Hossack with 247 assists, and Ainsley Selle with 149 kills.

#10 Hoehne

The Farmers are currently 8-2 in league play, 12-6 overall, and they are currently 3rd in the Santa Fe league. They defeated SCA and Walsenburg this last week, both 3-0, and will play two out of their five remaining games this week against Crowley County on 10/12 and Sangre de Cristo on 10/14. Top players for Hoehne are Kaylah Crosson with 36 total blocks, Ellegra Gutierrez with 53 serving aces and 172 digs, Phoenix SanRoman with 289  assists, and Janae Ramos with 192 kills.

Lake County

Even though the Panthers are outside of the top 10 on the CHSSA seeding index, they are in no danger of missing regionals. They currently still have a perfect record at 18-0 overall and 11-0 in league. Last week, they defeated Bennett and Bruce Randolph 3-0. Lake County has three games left for regular season against DSST Montview on 10/12, Jefferson on 10/14, and Buena Vista on 10/24. Top players for the Panthers are Jaycee Windorski with 27 total blocks and 340 kills, Kelsea Roeder with 65 aces, Isabelle Macias with 110 digs, and Maggie Roeder with 438 assists.

Strasburg

Sitting in 2nd place in the Union Pacific league, Strasburg has a  3-0 league record and are 10-5 overall. They were able to defeat Frontier Academy 3-0, and will face Deer Trail on 10/12, and Stratton on 10/12. Top players for Strasburg are Natalie Damron with 39 total blocks, 170 kills and 157 digs, and Peighton Marrero with 32 serving aces and 334 assists. They have 7 games left in the season and will be looking to get as many wins as possible for good regional seeding.

Grand Valley

Grand Valley has an overall record of 5-10 and is 4-6 in league play. They are 10th in the Western Slope league and are currently sitting as the number 34th team in the CHSSA Seeding Index, meaning they would make it to regionals as of today. The Cardinals lost this last week to Plateau Valley and De Beque 0-3 and will face North Fork on 10/17. They will need to win this game and the remaining 5 games on the schedule to ensure their place in the playoff bubble. Top players for Grand Valley are Chloe Gronewoller with 67 total blocks, Jaycee Pittman with 36 serving aces and 94 kills, Jacelyn Barragan with 265 digs, and Kaylae Medina with 145 assists.

Clear Creek

The Golddiggers are 7th in the Mile High league with a 4-5 league record and 7-7 overall. With two losses this last week to Lyons and Dayspring Christian 0-3, and a win against Bishop Machebeuf 3-1, Clear Creek is the 35th team in the CHSSA Seeding index, currently giving them a spot in regionals. However, being this close to the cut-off, Clear creek with have to win their remaining 4 games to ensure their spot. Games this week will be against Gilpin County on 10/12, and Dawson School on 10/18. Stat leaders for the Golddiggers are Kambrey Martin with 20 total blocks, Elliot Dunbar with 38 serving aces, Trinity Cade with 186 digs and 130 kills, and Kiere Ginter with 13 assists.

Golden View Classical Academy

With a 9-6 overall record, 3-2 in league play, and 3rd in the Foothills league, the Sentinels are ranked as the 36th team in the CHSSA seeding index and would the last team to make it into regionals. They suffered a loss to Windsor Charter Academy last week 0-3, and will be looking to win their last 5 games of the season to ensure their place in the playoffs. The games this week that Golden View will be playing are against Rocky Mountain Lutheran on 10/13, and Addenbrooke Classical on 10/16. Top players for the Sentinels are Reese Urbas with 36 total blocks, Ellie Smith with 37 serving aces and 67 kills, Katie Heldt with 89 digs, and Giulia Demin with 116 assists.

Peyton

As the 37th team in the CHSSA seeding Index, Peyton would be the first team to miss the playoffs if no more games where played.  With a 7-8 overall record and 2-1 in league play, the Panthers are 2nd in the Black Forest league. They won their game this last week Dolores Huerta Prep 3-0, and will need to win their next six games to have a shot at making it into the regional playoff bubble, including their game this week against Fountain Valley on 10/13. Stat leaders for Peyton are Sammie Nickell with 14 total blocks, Abbie Nickell with 26 serving aces and 337 assists, Tahjyanna McFall with 242 digs, and Savannah Kelley with 133 kills.

Las Animas

Sitting on the edge of the playoff bubble, Las Animas is the 38th team in the CHSSA Seeding Index. They are 5th in the Santa Fe League with an 8-10 overall record and a 5-6 league record. This last week of play, the Trojans saw a win against Crowley County 3-0, and a loss to Swink 0-3. They will need to win out the rest of their schedule to have a chance of getting into the playoffs, including their games this week against Holly on 10/12, Wiley on 10/13, and Rocky Ford on 10/17. Top players for the Trojans are Jadann Eck with 34 total blocks, Jesslyn Hogue with 37 serving aces, Chanel LaBarge with 76 digs and 102 assists, and Emma Netherton with 116 kills.
