Class 2A Football Preview-Week Two
We use the MileHigh Prep Report Coaches/Media Poll and go through the top matchups of Week Two. The 8 games selected seem to be the big matchups of the Second Week of the Season!
1A #3 Centauri (1-0) at #5 La Junta (2-0), Friday at 7pm
Last Week…La Junta improved to 2-0 on the season with a 42 to 0 victory over 3A Pueblo Centennial. La Junta has now posted back-to-back shutouts on the season. Defensively, La Junta has been impressive with the shutouts but face their biggest challenge to date. Las week Jordyn Herrera (7 tackles) and Samuel Tozzie (7 tackles) led the Tiger defense. Offensively, La Junta had a big day racking up 369 yards of total offense. QB Gavin Denahy had a big day passing for 203 yards, 3 TDs, and 1 INT. RB Chris Barela also had an impressive game with 108 yards rushing, 68 yards receiving and 1 TD and WR Christian Armendariz pitched in another 66 yards receiving and 1 TD.
Centauri opened their season during zero week and came away with a 31-0 victory over 2A Pagosa Springs. Centauri did not play last week and had two weeks to prepare for this game. Offensively, Centauri had a big game against Pagosa Springs racking up 350 yards of total offense. QB Grayson Hunzeker made his first career varsity start and had success passing for 163 yards and 1 TD. WR Donovan Jarvies was his top target with 5 receptions for 71 yards. RB Caden Ruggles also made his return after injury and rushed for 132 yards and 2 TDs. Defensively, Centauri held Pagosa Springs to 116 yards of total offense. No other stats were posted.
Series history… Centauri and La Junta are currently tied at 1-1, since 2004. These two teams last meet in 2009 with Centauri getting the 41 to 7 win.
#9 University (2-0) at #8 Lamar (2-0), Friday at 7pm
Last Week…Lamar improved to 2-0 on the season with a 42-20 win over Raton NM. Lamar got the offense going breaking the 40 point mark and racking up 341 yards of total offense. QB Jacob Dunning had a solid day passing for 214 yards and 4 TDs and his top target was WR Braedyn Fernandez who had 4 catches for 53 yards. RB Alex Aguilar also contributed offensively with 80 yards and 1 TD. Defensively Lamar forced 4 sacks and 1 turnover in the win. Krypten Kurtz (11 tackles) and Kilian Losa (10 tackles) led the Lamar defense.
University improved to 2-0 on the season with a 63 to 0 win over Manual. Back-to-back weeks University has broken the 50-point mark and posted their first shutout of the season. Offensively, University got things rolling with 229 yards of total offense. A few Freshman had some big carries with RB Henson Doss (54 yards and 1 TD) and RB Preston Schiller (53 yards and 2 TDs) led the Bulldog offense. Defensively, University had 3 sacks and forced a pair of fumbles in the win. Anwar Al-Rashed (3 tackles) and Amir Al-Rashed (2 tackles) led the University defense.
Series history… University and Lamar have not faced each other since 2004.
#3 Elizabeth (2-0) at Banning Lewis (2-0), Friday at 7pm
Last Week…Elizabeth improved to 2-0 on the season with a 35 to 7 win over Alamosa. Elizabeth has posted back-to-back weeks of giving up 7 points or less. Elizabeth defensively kept Alamosa off the scoreboard till late in the game. Elizabeth forced 2 sacks, 3 turnovers, 5 TFL in the win. Cash Buron (8 tackles) and Tyler Hanak led the Cardinal defense. Offensively, Elizabeth found some success racking up 313 yards of total offense. The rushing attack led the way racking up 259 yards and were led by RB Ryker Atkins (111 yards and 2 TDs) and RB Talyn Douglas (71 yards and 1 TD). QB Joaquin Aviles also contributed with 54 yards passing and 1 TD.
Banning Lewis improved to 2-0 on the season with a 30 to 14 win over Fort Lupton. Banning Lewis is off to a solid start this year but face their toughest test of the season. Offensively, QB Sam Early has led the way and last week threw for 99 yards and 2 TDs while rushing for 78 yards and 1 TD. RB Brecken Hawkins (43 yards and 1 TD) and WR Josh Pacheco (34 yards) also contributed offensively. Defensively, Banning Lewis held Fort Lupton to just 124 yards of total offense. Banning Lewis forced 9 sacks and 5 turnovers in the win. Sam Early (9 tackles) and Wade Gadberry (7 tackles) led the way for the Stallions.
Series history… Elizabeth and Banning Lewis have not faced each other since 2004.
#2 Classical Academy (2-0) at Alamosa (1-1), Saturday at 2pm
Last Week…Classical Academy moved to 2-0 on the season picking up a top 5 win over Eaton 17 to 14. All the points in the game came in the 4th Quarter with Classical Academy scoring the go-ahead TD to win the game. Offensively, Classical Academy had a solid game plan racking up 318 yards of total offense. QB Wilson Grothe continues to play well throwing for 137 yards, 1 TD, and 2 INTs. Grother top target was WR Nathaniel Thorne who had 3 catches for 46 yards. The rushing attack did lead the way with 181 yards and led by RB Josiah Musilli who had 116 yards and 1 TD. Defensively, TCA did enough to snag the win forcing 3 sacks, 8 TFL, and 3 turnovers in the game. Ryan Gowler (7 tackles) and Landon Langley (6 tackles) led the way for TCA.
Alamosa dropped their first game of the season falling to #3 Elizabeth 35 to 7. Alamosa defense kept them in the game going into halftime trailing just 14 to 0. Alamosa defense did give up over 300 yards of total offense but made key stops to limit the scoring of Elizabeth. No defensive stats were input for the game. Offensively, Alamosa did struggle at times and racked up just 163 yards of total offense. QB Evan Anderson led the way for the Moose with 101 yards passing, 1 TD, 1 INT and another 28 yards rushing. WR Elijah Salazar was the top target with 4 catches for 69 yards and 1 TD and RB Zavier Maez led the way for the rushing attack with 22 yards on 9 carries.
Series history… Classical Academy leads the series 4 to 0 over Alamosa, since 2004. They last meet in 2023 with TCA winning 21 to 20.
Strasburg (0-1) at Weld Central (0-2), Friday at 7pm
Last Week…Strasburg dropped their home & season opener to Wiggins 14 to 13 in an exciting game. Strasburg held the lead most of the game but, Wiggins came up big at the end. Strasburg has not input any stats from the game. What we do know is Wiggins racked up 207 yards of total offense. Strasburg also gave up 2 INTs and a blocked FG.
Weld Central fell to 0-2 on the season with a 24 to 9 loss to Brush on the road. Weld Central opened the season with back-to-back road games and fell in both in closely contested games. Weld Central will look to get things figured out defensively after giving up 297 yards on the ground. Weld Central will look for players like Cristiano Ontiveros (15 tackles) and Kenneth Cook (13 tackles) to step up again this week and lead the defense. Offensively, Weld Central was limited in their offensive attack racking up just 144 yards of total offense. QB Luke Witzel led the passing attack with 82 yards but had 2 INTs. WR Andrew Dinges was the top target with 4 receptions for 74 yards. The rushing attack was led by RB Braden Schellenberg who had 12 carries for 52 yards.
Series history… Weld Central leads the series over Strasburg 6-2, since 2004. The last time they meet was in 2011 with Strasburg getting the 49 to 19 win.
3A Fort Morgan (0-1) at Brush (1-1), Friday at 7pm
Last Week…Brush improved to 1-1 on the season following a 24 to 9 win over Weld Central. Brush dominated on the ground racking up 297 yards of rushing with another 67 yards through the air. RB Jolani Thomas had a career day with 23 carries for 242 yards and 2 TDs and RB Cassius Middlemist contributed with another 41 yards. QB Trent Garrett had a solid day passing going 6 of 9 for 67 yards. Defensively it was a solid game by Brush holding Weld Central to just 144 yards of total offense. Brush also forced 4 turnovers and 3 sacks. Jose Ortega (12 tackles) and Cassius Middlemist (10 tackles) led the way for the Brush defense.
Fort Morgan kicked off their season with a 33 to 13 lose to Berthoud in Week Zero. Fort Morgan had a bye and an extra week to prepare for this game. Fort Morgan will look for QB Maverick Glenn to get going this week he threw for 105 yards and 2 TDs in the opener and WR Frank Urias was the top target catching 4 passes for 50 yards. RB Dom Marquez led the rushing attack with 19 carries for 109 yards. Defensively, Quintin Aleman (11 tackles) and Jordan Perez (8 tackles) led the way for Fort Morgan.
Series history… Brush leads the series with Fort Morgan 10 to 0, since 2004. The played last year with Brush winning 54 to 15.
3A Pueblo Centennial (0-1) at Florence (0-2), Friday at 7pm
Last Week…Florence dropped to 0-2 on the season with a 41 to 13 loss to Monte Vista on the road. Florence has given up over 40 points in back-to-back games and will look to get the defense sorted out. Marcus Robinson (6 tackles) and Oliver Sebes (5 tackles) look to lead the defense this week to an improved effort. Offensively, Florence racked up 206 yards of total offense with a large chunk coming in the second half after the clock was running. RB JJ Baker led the way with 99 yards rushing and 1 rushing TD. QB Ryan Robinson also contributed with another 53 yards rushing and 1 TD and RB Marcus Robinson pitched in another 26 yards.
Pueblo Centennial opened their season with a 42 to 0 loss to La Junta last week. Offensively, Pueblo Centennial will hope to get the offense going after racking up just 163 yards in the game. RB Samuel Lucero led the offense with 48 yards and RB Easton Adamson also contributed 47 yards on 12 carries. QB Augustine Sena will look for a bigger game as well after throwing for 21 yards and 1 INT. Defensively, Pueblo Centennial will look to improve after giving up 369 yards. Brayden Villegas (10 tackles) and Nickolas Chavez (6 tackles) will look to lead the defense to a better effort this week.
Series history… These two teams have not meet since 2004.
