SIX-MAN FOOTBALL REPORT – WEEK SEVEN

We’re down to just four weekends of regular season football in six-man and the clashes between highly-ranked teams continue to litter the schedule. This weekend will see nine of the top-10 teams in the latest release of the CHSAA rankings in action, with us getting three ranked vs ranked contests. Of the top-10, only #7 Otis is off, as the Bulldogs have a well-timed bye following last week’s loss to #1 Prairie.

FRIDAY

#1 PRAIRIE (6-0) AT WELDON VALLEY (1-5)

As noted in the open, Prairie handed Otis its first loss of the season last weekend, 61-19. The Mustangs got four rushing touchdowns from Derek Dollerschell and two passing scores from Liam Bringelson, one apiece to Case Kugler and Tatum Bailey. Wyatt Walker led the defense with 11 tackles, including a sack, and Bailey added 10 stops. Kugler recovered two fumbles, and Dollerschell had a scoop-and-score. Weldon Valley fell to 0-4 in the North with a 65-38 loss to #14 Briggsdale. Zander Braun threw for 124 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 77 yards to lead the Warrior offense. Noah Johnson ran for 105 yards and two scores, and caught two passes for 38 yards and another TD. Braun also led the defense, racking up 17 tackles, two being sacks. Luca Petrino added 10 tackles, and Seth O’Patik picked off two passes. Prairie has won eight straight against Weldon Valley, and is 13-6 in the series since 2004. Weldon Valley’s last win was in 2016.

#2 IDALIA (6-0) AT #12 BETHUNE (4-3)

Idalia came off its bye and handed #10 Flagler a 56-8 loss in East Central play. With Gabe Kechter in street clothes the Wolves got 179 yards and five touchdowns through the air from Broderick Kite. Jace Morris and Jaasiel Estrada caught two TD passes apiece, and Bode Monahan added 94 yards and a touchdown on the ground. J. Morris tallied 13 tackles and a forced fumble, and Kolby Morris returned a punt for a TD. Bethune had trouble holding onto the ball against Genoa-Hugo/Karval, losing five fumbles, but the Bobcats were able to overcome those issues and pull out a 52-46 victory. Ismael Perla ran for 143 yards and three touchdowns, and he added another TD passing. Angel Millan tacked on 82 yards, and had a TD run and a TD pass. Josh Salinas hauled in two scoring passes. Gavin Malave piled up 20 tackles and added an interception. This will be the first meeting between Idalia and Bethune since 2015.

#3 CHEYENNE WELLS (5-1) VS #9 WILEY (4-2)

Cheyenne Wells picked up a win in the South East without stepping on the field last week, as the Tigers received a forfeit from Cheraw, who was dealing with injuries. The Tigers had earned a 65-18 win over Weldon Valley the week prior with Trevin Smith running for 163 yards and four touchdowns. Marcus Bogenhagen completed three passes for 48 yards and a TD, all to Kelby Leonard. Leonard added a team-leading eight tackles. Wiley picked up a 58-6 win in divisional play at Manzanola, keeping the Panthers one game behind the co-leaders (Cheyenne Wells, Granada). This is just the third meeting between Cheyenne Wells and Wiley in six-man, with the Tigers having dominated the Panthers to the tune of 116-6 over the last two seasons.

#4 PEETZ (5-1) VS #6 FLEMING (6-1)

Peetz maintained a share of the North lead with Prairie by shutting out North Park 58-0 last week. The Bulldogs led 51-0 at the half. Corbin Bondegard scored two rushing touchdowns, and four other players had one apiece. Tanner Wood topped the defense with 10 tackles, and that unit recorded six takeaways. Conner Schumacher tallied a pick-six and a fumble recovery, and Chance Dennison returned a punt for a score. Fleming stepped out of league play to visit Deer Trail, and the Wildcats claiming a 70-14 victory. Jaron Monroe rushed for 105 yards and four touchdowns, and he had a TD pass to Treyson Kirkwood, who also tossed a touchdown pass. Dylon Monroe recorded a fumble recovery and an interception for the Wildcats on defense. Fleming and Peetz have swapped wins the last four years, with the Bulldogs taking a 28-18 victory last year. Overall, Fleming holds a 13-11 record during the MaxPreps era.

#5 GRANADA (4-1) AT #8 WALSH (4-2)

Granada sat last week out as the Bobcats were on a bye after dominating Wiley 69-18 a week earlier. Sebastian Pizarro scored five rushing touchdowns in that win, and Alejandro Perez hooked up three times with Angelo Martinez for TD passes. Martinez ended up with six catches for 187 yards. Pizarro and Martinez had a pick-six apiece, and Pizarro registered two of the team’s four fumble recoveries. Walsh won its third straight with a 47-7 victory over Kiowa in non-league action. The Eagles were up 47-0 at the half. Dallas Alley threw for just over 100 yards and two touchdowns, one apiece to Woodrow Wright and Beau Foster, and Grady Mundell added 98 yards and two rushing touchdowns. The defense got in on the fun with four interceptions, including a pick-six apiece for Alley, Gage Caddick, and Jaxson Frazee. Granada has won all six previous meetings with Walsh in six-man.

#10 FLAGLER (4-3) VS GENOA-HUGO/KARVAL (1-5)

Flagler just couldn’t get much going in the 56-8 loss to Idalia last week, as the Panthers suffered their first loss in East Central play. Keegan Isenbart made his return after missing three weeks with an injury and led the rushing attack with 76 yards and a TD. Dawson Brent recorded seven tackles to pace the defense, and Axel Lahm added six. Genoa-Hugo/Karval got 172 yards and four TD passes from Ryker Lockhart in its 52-46 loss to Bethune. Two went to Cash Stone, who also had 136 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Stone racked up 16 tackles and four fumble recoveries as well. The Pirates have won two of the last three games against Flagler since 2022, but it was the Panthers collecting a 30-25 victory last year.
