The other top ten game was #8 Bayfield which played Kirtland Central out of New Mexico, Bayfield won easily 43 to 0. A couple other playoff team’s played as well last week. La Junta opened up its season with a 54 to 6 win over 3A Sierra, Sterling beat 3A Elizabeth 26 to 7, and Montezuma Cortez was beat by Aspen 29 to 12. This week features 9 of the 10 top ten teams playing, with Bayfield having the lone bye. There are 5 very intriguing match-ups this week. #1 Brush (2A) plays #2 Fort Morgan (3A) this yearly match-up features two top teams in 2A and 3A. Usually Brush dominates these match-ups but this year might be a little different with Fort Morgan having an impressive run in the 3A state playoffs. Brush will be looking to start its title defense and could take a big step at that with a win over a highly ranked opponent. The second match up is #2 Kent Denver vs #7 Gunnison this is a rematch of last year in which Kent Denver was victorious. Kent Denver will be looking this year to take the next step at a championship after losing to Brush in the State Finals, Gunnison made it to the Quarterfinals before being upset and this year they look to have a deeper run. The next match up is #3 Strasburg vs #5 Platte Valley. This is a playoff rematch in which Platte Valley scored the upset with a 23 to 13 victory. This is now Platte Valley second game and will look to rebound off a loss, Strasburg is looking to continue moving forward with last year’s progress and look to take the next step to a championship. The fourth match-up is #6 Eaton as it travels to Bennett. Bennett last year was a playoff team but was knocked off in the first round, Eaton on the other hand made it to the State Semi-Finals before running into State Champion Brush. These two teams played each other last year with Eaton grabbing the victory. The fifth and final match up pits #10 Lamar (2A) vs #10 Burlington (1A), this is also a rematch from last year with Lamar beat Burlington. Both teams qualified for the state tournament last year with both teams losing in the first round both teams will be looking to make bigger runs in the playoffs this year.

Non-Top Ten Key Games

La Junta vs Raton                                                             Sterling vs Mead (3A)

Class 1A

Last week offered one top ten game and one team that made the playoffs. The ranked game was a good one featuring #3 Meeker vs #6 Rye. Rye pulled the upset winning 17 to 16 to avenge last year loss in the playoffs. The other game was between Wray and Cornerstone Christian. Wray won easily winning 48 to 14 to get their campaign started. This week all top ten teams are in play with 3 games of interest in the top ten and 3 games with non-top ten teams. The first game of interest is #1 Paonia at #7 Monte Vista. Paonia starts there path to a three peat with a tough first game against Monte Vista. Monte Vista on the other hand had a tough first round loss a year ago against Rye and look to make it farther in the playoff. Last year these two teams meet with Paonia winning, this will be the best game in 1A this week. The second game is #2 Buena Vista at Alamosa (2A). Buena Vista is coming off a tough loss in the state championship. They look to start there run to a title by facing off against a tough Alamosa team. Last year these two teams meet with Buena Vista coming out ahead. The third game is #5 Platte Canyon at Ridgeview Academy (2A). Last year these two teams played with Platte Canyon coming out ahead. Platte Canyon last year made it to the state quarterfinals before losing to eventual state champions Paonia. They look to build off the momentum gained last year and take a step farther into the playoffs. The fourth game is between two teams snubbed of playoff berth in Center and Salida. Salida last year had a great season but lacked a quality win that kept them out. They look this year to take that next step and qualify for the playoffs and make some noise in the playoffs. They start their campaign against another team who barely missed the playoffs in Center. Center looks to challenge Monte Vista and Centauri for the conference crown and a game like this could be a huge step. These two teams meet a year ago with Salida winning. The fifth game is between Limon who is usually a top ten team against a Yuma team who started showing some signs at the end of the year. Limon lost in the first round of playoffs last year to Centauri but look to rebound off that and make it farther into the playoffs. Limon beat Yuma last year to start the season and look to do the same this year.  The sixth game is between Centauri and Pagosa Springs. Centauri is another team accustomed to being in the top ten and will have to prove themselves after losing a ton of talent. Centauri last year lost in the quarterfinals to Resurrection Christian 22 to 16 and are looking to continue their dominance in their conference. Centauri won this meeting a year ago.
