Week 2 Breakdown 2A and 1A
Week one had a few surprises in the Top ten and there is plenty of movement in the rankings this week. To start off week 1 we had the #1 team in the state Brush facing a very good #2 Fort Morgan (3A) and were beat easily 47 to 7. The new number one team in 2A Kent Denver blasted then #7 Gunnison 41 to 13 racking up 461 yards of offense, 141 yards passing and 320 yards rushing. This is the second straight year that Kent Denver has beat Gunnison. Another Top ten matchup featured #3 Strasburg against #5 Platte Valley. Platte Valley rebounded off their loss last week by pounding Strasburg 30 to 7. This win avenged last year loss to Strasburg. Another game of interest was Florence vs (3A) Harrison. Florence who won this match-up last year was upset by Harrison 21 to 12. Harrison used a huge first half to gain the 21 point lead and held on against a late surge from Florence. This week we have some great games and it starts off with Brush at Weld Central (3A). Brush will be looking to bounce back from a lopsided loss to Fort Morgan (3A). Weld Central is coming off a loss to D’Evelyn 56 to 20, of those 20 points 13 came in the fourth quarter after the game was secured. Brush will need to step up its run defense if it wants any chance of winning this game.
#3 Faith Christian faces off against Florence. Last year Faith Christian was upset by Florence 13 to 7. Faith Christian will be looking to avenge their loss from last year. They opened up the season with a 46 to 32 victory over Manitou Springs. Florence will be looking to bounce back from a loss to 3A Harrison. Florence must hope they can get their offensive attack going if they are looking to pull the upset of Faith Christian.
#6 Bayfield has a huge match-up this week with #5 Miyamura (5A, NM). Last year these two teams faced off with Miyamura winning the match-up. Bayfield is coming off a bye week but the previous week they handled Kirtland Central (NM) 43 to 0. Miyamura beat Montezuma-Cortez last week which is in the same league as Bayfield. Miyamura used a great rushing attack to beat Montezuma-Cortez racking up 353 yards of rushing and 167 yards of passing. This should be the best game in 2A this week.

Sterling is also coming off a loss to Mead (3A) and will be looking upset a ranked opponent. These two teams meet a year ago with Strasburg winning this match-up. These are two teams that made the playoffs last year and both are hoping to continue towards that with a win.
#9 La Junta takes on Alamosa. La Junta has quickly asserted themselves into the rankings this year. With monster wins against Sierra (54 to 8) and Raton (47 to 0) they are hoping to keep building off their momentum and take care of business against Alamosa. Against both Ignacio (week zero) and Olathe they have leaned very heavy on the run rushing for 360 against Ignacio and 257 against Olathe. They have not passed over 70 yards this year. These two teams meet last year multiple times last year and Buena Vista won them all and Hotchkiss is looking to avenge those losses.
