Week 4 Breakdown
Last week once again we had some top ten teams get upset and the rankings were once again shaken up. #1 Kent Denver and #2 Brush held serve with nice wins over Denver West and Glenwood Springs. #3 Eaton was upset again by a very good La Junta team 33 to 14. #6 Faith Christian lost for the second straight week to unranked Alameda 38 to 22. #8 Florence was also beat by Pueblo County 14 to 0 and #8 Roaring Fork was also upset by Olathe 24 to 0. #10 Sterling did get by Wray 42 to 6. In the unranked games we had Lamar hold on against Alamosa 14 to 13, Strasburg picked up its first win of the season against Middle Park 53 to 10, and Gunnison bounced back from a tough loss last week with a good 41 to 20 win against Moffat County.
This week we have 3 teams with Bye’s in the top ten Platte Valley, La Junta, and Sterling. #1 Kent Denver has a league match up against Ridgeview Academy. Kent Denver has been very good on the ground averaging 271 yards per game while there passing game has been good enough to keep teams honest averaging 108 yards per game. So far this season Kent Denver has not scored under 40 points or allowed over 14 points. Ridgeview Academy is looking to use some momentum gained off last week’s win over Machebuf. Ridgeview used a great second quarter to pull off the victory. Kent Denver should be able to pull the victory off.
The game of the week features #2 Brush against #9 Lamar which will be played Saturday. Since there opening week loss against Fort Morgan, Brush has rebounded nicely with 2 straight wins. They have leaned heavily on the rushing attack running for 389 yards last week. Their passing attack has been none existing throwing last week 5 times gaining only 7 yards. They may need more balance this week against Lamar. Lamar held on last week against Alamosa winning 14 to 13. They have been leaning heavily as well on their rushing attack. This game will come down to which defense is more stout in the front 7.
#7 Eaton will be looking to bounce back from a loss last week to La Junta. They will face off against Manitou Springs. In their loss last week Eaton had to rely heavily on the pass. They threw for 227 yards but could only muster 95 yards on the ground. They also only scored in the first half and were shut out in the second half. They will need to get back to being more balance this week. Manitou Springs will continue their gauntlet of games. So far this year they have faced Faith Christian, Woodland Park, and Buena Vista. It does not get any easier this week or next week when they play La Junta. Eaton will be looking to once again balance their attack and should be able to get the victory.
Newly ranked #8 Alameda will face off against Denver North this week in a league matchup. Alameda last week beat Faith Christian to catapult themselves into the rankings. So far this year they have not scored under 30 points and have beat quality opponents in 3A Skyview and Faith Christian. They will look to continue their momentum. Denver North started the season off with a loss but have since won 2 straight. Their defense has been much good in the past two games allowing only 7 and 8 points. They will need that this week if they are to pull the upset of Alameda. Alameda should win this game and continue their great season.
Another newly ranked team is #10 Academy. They faceoff this week against Middle Park in a league matchup. Academy is yet to play a quality opponent with the teams they have beat with a combined record of 0-9 but next week play a playoff team from last year in Bennett. Academy used a huge 23 point second quarter to beat St. Mary’s last week. Middle Park has started the season off 1-2 and have a couple 50 point game on them losing 50 to 14 to Battle Mountain and 50-10 against Strasburg last week. They will need their defense to step up if they want to win this game. Academy should win this game setting up the big game against Bennet next week.
