Class 2A League Breakdown Week 5

Class 2A League Breakdown

Colorado League

So far this year in the Colorado league things have not been exactly as planned. Faith Christian started the season as the #4 ranked team. Then in weeks 2 and 3 they dropped games to unranked teams in Florence (1-3) and Alameda who is really the surprise team so far this year. Alameda has started the season 4-0 (2-0) and are hoping to challenge Kent Denver for the league crown. Alameda this week faces a Machebuf team that is also having a good season so far. They have started off 3-1 with wins against teams that are struggling but will be looking for a key victory this season. Alameda offense has been on fire they have yet to score under 38 points this year. This game should be won by Alameda. Another game of interest is Faith Christian at Ridgeview Academy. So far this season Faith Christian has yet to live up to preseason expectations. They did have a good game last week against Manual winning 48 to 7.   They will need to keep that going if they want to make a run for a playoff spot. Ridgeview Academy is coming off a 40 to 0 loss to Kent Denver and will be looking to rebound. Faith Christian should keep things rolling this week and grab the win.

Frontier

Like in the Colorado league there has been some slight disappointment for one teams that was highly ranked in the preseason, Strasburg started the season as the #3 team in the state. They started the season by dropping games against Platte Valley and Sterling who are both ranked teams. The difference between Strasburg and Faith Christian is that Strasburg has not dropped a league game which is very beneficial to them. The Frontier league also has a surprise team as well in Academy who has started the season 4-0. Academy has yet to play a team with a winning record which is the big knock on them. The combined record of the teams that have beat is 2-14. They struggled a little last week against Middle Park winning 33 to 27. The first test for Academy will be this week against Bennett 2-2. Bennett made the playoff last year and are hoping to achieve the same thing this year. Bennett has relied heavily on the run rushing for 253 ypg so far this season. I don’t think Academy will have an answer for Bennett rushing attack and Bennett will pull off the upset. Strasburg vs Pinnacle is another game with some interest. Pinnacle is 1-3 (1-1) in conference and is looking to move up in the league. Strasburg is looking to get their mark above .500 and they should very easily.

Patriot

Once again the Patriot league is the best league in Class 2A. They have 5 teams with winning record and 4 teams are ranked. This league will more than likely get 4 teams into the playoffs so of the 5 teams with winning record right now one will be left out. The game of the week in 2A is #5 Platte Valley at #7 Eaton. Platte Valley will be the favorite in the game due to their ranking. Platte Valley had a rough start to their season dropping their opener but have since rebounded nicely winning three straight and not scoring under 30 points. The turnaround should be contributed to their defense allowing only 7 points once and 6 points twice. Last week they beat a very good 3A team in Lutheran and are hoping to use that momentum in this week’s game. Eaton Started off the season hot winning two straight games before running into a very good La Junta team. They did rebound nicely last week winning 31-21 against Manitou Springs. Eaton has relied heavily on their rushing attack running for over 300 yards in 3 games so far this year, the one exception was in the loss to La Junta where they ran for only 95 yards. Eaton also proved they can pass but would rather run the ball. This should be a good game they do have one common opponent and both teams beat Bennet by over 30 points. Another good game will be #2 Brush against unranked Valley 3-1. Valley has started this year really good with nice wins against Fort Lupton (3A) and Wray (1A). Their one loss was to a undefeated Berthoud in 3A. Valley for the past few years has not been in the mix for a league crown and this year looks to be different. They have been very good at running the ball rushing for 279.3 ypg. They will need that plus some more balance to beat a very good Brush team. Brush started the season with a by getting hammered by a very good Fort Morgan team but since then their offense has woken up and have three straight victories two against 3A teams and one against a ranked opponent. The one thing that Brush has struggled with is defense allowing over 19 points in every game so far. Valley will be looking for that signature victory on the season and that could be against Brush.

Tri-Peaks

It seems like every league this season has had a surprise team. La Junta is the Tri-Peaks surprise team this year. To start the season Lamar and Florence were the teams ranked but currently neither are ranked one has a losing record and La Junta is undefeated and has a key win against #7 Eaton. This week they still don’t have an easy matchup. Manitou Springs has yet to win a game but has played a brutal schedule facing; Faith Christian, Woodland Park, Buena Vista, and Eaton their combined record is 12-4. Any team facing that tough of competition will start playing better. La Junta should still be able to grab the victory but it won’t be a cake walk. The key game in league this week is Trinidad at Florence. Both teams at some point were ranked in either my poll or in Chsaanow.com poll. Florence has had a roll coaster of a season. They started off by losing to Harrison which dropped them out of the polls then upsetting then ranked #2 Faith Christian which re-ranked them then followed that victory with two straight losses. The important thing for Florence is they have played 3 3A schools and only 1 2A school. The problem it seems this year with Florence has been offense and not scoring enough points to compete. Trinidad was ranked after their week 2 win over Raton in Chsaanow.com poll. In week 3 though they were defeated easily by Rye (1A) who is ranked. This dropped them out of that poll but they rebounded nicely last week beating Alamosa 27 to 17. Trinidad relies heavily on their rushing attack and if it falters so does Trinidad. In their wins they ran for over 300 yards and in their one loss they ran for 36 yards. So the key for the game will be simple who stops the run will win this game.

Western Slope-North

I don’t know where to begin with this league. At one point Roaring Fork was ranked because of their key victory over Meeker (1A) and another victory over Grand Valley. They then dropped two straight against Olathe and Gunnison. This week they face off against an Aspen team that has struggled this season as well. Both teams are 2-2 and looking for a leg up in the conference race. Another team who has gotten consideration for being ranked was Moffat County. They started the season with a nice victory over Steamboat Springs then lost to Rifle who is a very good 3A team then followed up that with a victory against Ridgeview Academy and then last week got pummeled by Gunnison 41 to 20. This league is completely up for grabs like it was last it year and really will come down to which team can play consistently.

Western Slope-South

The Western Slope-South has some nice depth this year very similar to last year. Bayfield right now is the main leader with a monster victory over Paonia last week 35-0. That win ended Paonia 26 game winning streak. Bayfield has no time to celebrate though they are facing a very good Olathe team (3-1). So far this season Bayfield has relied on the run but can keep opponents honest with a good passing attack. Both Bayfield’s offense and defense have been amazing this season. So far they have 2 shutouts and their offense has scored over 30 points in all three games. Olathe started the season with a pair of close games beating Hotchkiss 29 to 27 in Double OT and then the following week losing to ranked Cedaredge 14 to 12. The next two weeks Olathe slammed Roaring Fork and Coal Ridge. This game will be a true measuring stick for Olathe. Bayfield has a very good team and will be tough to beat I see Bayfield winning this one as well. The other key game will be Gunnison at Montezuma-Cortez. Gunnison started the season rough with two straight losses to ranked teams but rebounded nicely with wins over Moffat County and Roaring Fork. They are looking to get over .500 and to put themselves into position to make the playoffs. I see Gunnison winning this game easily but it’s a trap game. Gunnison next week faces-off against Bayfield. Both teams will need to focus on this week’s game.
