Class 1A League Breakdown Week 5

Metro League

Once again the Metro League is being paced by Resurrection Christian and Platte Canyon. Both of these teams are the only teams in the league that have a record above .500. In the standing though Platte Canyon is not in second due to their early season loss to Resurrection Christian. Second place is a tie right now between Cornerstone Christian and Front Range Christian. This week Platte Canyon gets Front Range Christian and will be looking to grab themselves a victory and move up the conference standings. Platte Canyon started the season with a couple good victory’s beating Ridgeview academy and also beating #9 ranked Wiggins. They grabbed their first conference victory with a nice win against Clear Creek and will be looking to grab their second. Platte Canyon relies heavily on the ground attack and in their 3 wins rushed for over 300 yards. Front Range Christian had a slow start to the season starting 0-2 but faced very quality opponents. Since opening 0-2 they won their next two. They still have not grab a quality victory but will be looking for it this week. For Front Range Christian to pull the upset they will need to stop then run if they can do that Platte Canyon will be in some trouble. Platte Canyon’s offense has been pretty effective this far and should be able to win this game.

North Central League

The North Central league used to be one of the toughest division in the state but with Wray and Yuma having another down year I would say that title belongs to the Western Slope league. The league is paced by two quality teams in Burlington and Wiggins both are 3-1 and have losses against ranked opponents. There is a dark horse in the race this year with Highland having a 3-1 record as well.   Yuma coming into the year had some momentum from last year when they had a few upsets but have not really strung anything together and are 1-3 the same could be said for Wray who also a one point was on the verge of being ranked. They opened the season with a nice win over Cornerstone Christian but since then have played very tough opponents; Goodland (KS), Sterling, and Valley. Wray has a chance to turn their entire season around right away in league play when they face a very good Wiggin’s team. Wray this season has been almost completely reliant on the run and passing game has been nonexistent. They will probably need to be able to score plenty of points to keep up with Wiggin’s high power offense. Since their second week loss to Platte Canyon Wiggins has woken up with a pair of nice wins. Their offense is very balanced they average 141.7 passing ypg and 243.5 rushing ypg. This could be an early test for Wiggin’s, last year Wray surprised a few team in league play and I know they would like to do the same this year. The surprise team in the league is Highland and they host Holyoke this week. Highland opened up the season with a tough loss to Resurrection Christian but have since rebounded very nicely grabbing three straight victories. They are still searching for that key victory of the season and that will have to wait until the play Wiggins next week but they better not overlook Holyoke. Highland has improved every week when it comes to running the football, they ran for 477 yards last week against Calhan. Holyoke opened the season with a very nice win over Akron (8man) but have since struggled going 1-2 in the next three weeks. Holyoke relies on the pass, passing for more yards this season than rushing. Holyoke will be looking to grab a key early league victory but will need a strong defense to grab the win.

South Central League

Limon once again looks to be leader in the league with a nice 4-0 start and a key victory over Burlington. They should have an easy week when they face Calhan who started 1-3. The teams that are fighting for that second playoff spot is Colorado Spring Christian and Crowley County and they face each other right away. Crowley County has a very big key victory early on with an upset win over ranked Rye 21-20 and then losing the following week to ranked Wiggins 27-20. Crowley County is a battle tested team so far this season. They have been very efficient at running the ball even in their losses they have ran for over 200 yards and have a good enough passing game to keep teams honest. Things don’t get any easier for Crowley County this week. Colorado Springs Christian has started 2-2 so far this season but have yet to grab a key victory. They have wins over St. Mary’s 0-4 and Salida 2-2 and losses to Peyton 3-1 and Ellicott 3-1. This week could be the key victory that Colorado Springs Christian needs. Their offense has also been very reliant on the pass throwing for over 200 yards in 3 of the 4 games but turnovers have been costly throwing 8 INT to just 9 TDs. They will need to be more balanced and watch the turnovers if they are looking to grab an upset victory over Crowley County.

Southern Peaks League

The South Peaks League is starting with a bang. The key game in 1A this week is Center traveling to Monte Vista. Monte Vista so far this season has faced a decently tough schedule with a nice key victory over ranked Gunnison (2A) and a nice win over Hotchkiss. Center schedule does not look to be a tough with victories over Salida 2-2, Basalt 1-3 and Lake County 0-4. In both team’s losses they were to very tough opponents. Monte Vista started off against #1 Paonia and lost 21-7 but since that loss have ran off three straight wins and their offense looks to have woken up rushing for over 200 yards against Hotchkiss and Pagosa Springs. Monte Vista does have a good enough passing game to keep teams for stacking the box. The key for Monte Vista has been their defense even in their loss to Paonia they only allowed 21 points and look to lean on that again this week. Center started this season on fire wining three straight games before losing to Cedaredge. In their loss to Cedaredge they were losing by one at halftime 14 to 13 before Cedaredge went on and scored 26 unanswered points. Center offense is very balanced as well no stats were uploaded to Maxpreps.com. The other game of interest is Centauri at Dolores. Centauri has played a brutal schedule this year which the main contributor to their 1-3 record. They have faced Pagosa Springs, Lamar, Paonia, and Buena Vista their only win against those four opponents was Pagosa Springs. Centauri will be looking to gain from the experience in those games because they do have a ton of young talent and will look to bounce back in league play. Dolores is heading into league with a 2-2 record. Their wins are against out of state opponents and they were blowouts. Their losses were to Coal Ridge (2A) and Salida. Dolores is looking for that key victory of the season and I would consider Centauri to be a huge game for them. Since moving into the conference it’s usually Monte Vista and Centauri as the top team but Dolores will get a shot to dethrone one of them this week. Dolores offense is a little more balanced throwing for 97.3 ypg and rushing for 155.5 ypg. This is also a very big game for Centauri because they are looking to bounce back from three straight losses. One last note, if I had to pick a dark horse in league this year it would be John Mall they may only be 2-2 but their losses to Crowley County 33-15 and Limon 12-0 were not that bad and could be good experience going into league play.

Tri-Peaks League

Once again the Tri-Peaks league is being led by #1 Buena Vista who has yet to lose a regular season game since dropping down to 1A. Buena Vista has been very dominate so far this year winning games by a combined 180 to 45. Their closest game was Alamosa 33 to 12 which could hurt Buena Vista if they run into a close game in league. They open play against Salida this week and they should be able to easily move by them and continue their run towards another league crown. The only game of real interest this week is Ellicott at Peyton. Both teams are coming into this contest at 3-1. Ellicott has yet to grab that elusive key victory and came close against Burlington 20 to 14. In all their wins though they have scored over 40 points. Ellicott uses a very balanced offense throwing for over 150 yards in every game and rushing for over 200 yards twice this season. In their one loss Ellicott couldn’t get their rushing attack going and that cost them a chance at an upset. Peyton jumped to a quick 3-0 record with victories against Denver West, Calhan, and a quality win against Colorado Springs Christian before running into their first loss against Limon 23-13. Peyton in their one loss could not get their rushing attack going and that cost them the game. The key in this pivotal league game is who will get their rushing attack going first and whoever is successful will get the victory. The winner of this game will finish I believe in third or higher.

Western Slope League

For the first time in two seasons Paonia is not undefeated going into league play and could be challenged this year for the league crown. Paonia was defeated last week by Bayfield 35-0 which really was a shocker. I believed the game would be close but Bayfield was able to slow down the rushing attack of Paonia and unlike Monte Vista Bayfield shut the pass down as well. In two of the four games for Paonia they ran for over 250 yards but in their close games they could only get 171 yards and 158 yards. This could be a formula on how to beat Paonia. Since the Western Slope league is the best in the state there should always be at least one good game per week and that will hold true this week as Hotchkiss travels to face Cedaredge. Hotchkiss has played a really tough schedule so far this season. With losses to Buena Vista, Olathe, and Monte Vista two of which are ranked and Olathe is a 2A school. Because of the tough schedule this year they have started 1-3 but they will be a tough team to beat in league this year. Hotchkiss offense is completely reliant on their rushing attack. In their first two games they were able to run for over 250 yards but since then have not rushing for over 200 yards. Their passing attack has yet to eclipse 100 yards or throw a TD pass. Hotchkiss need their offense to get going this week if they want to pull the upset. Cedaredge has started the season out on fire starting 4-0. They have rolled through two very tough opponents in Olathe and Center. Their offense is led by a very good rushing attack that has picked up production every week. They started with 163 yards against Basalt and last week ran for 290 yards against Center. This game will be very interesting to watch both teams have played Olathe and Cedaredge won by two and Hotchkiss lost by two in Double OT. If Hotchkiss can get their offense going this could be a scary game. Cedaredge is coming off a big win over Center and will have momentum.
