Week 6 2A League Breakdown
There were very few surprises last week in the Colorado league. Alameda, Kent Denver, and Faith Christian all picked up nice victories. Alameda continued to dominate this season with a nice 44 to 0 victory over Machebuf and Kent Denver also continued its domination with a 40 to 0 victory. If there is any indication this league is a two horse race. Alameda already has a big win over Faith Christian and Kent Denver still needs to play them but when these two teams meet it will be for a league title. Faith Christian got a nice victory over Ridgeview Academy 50 to 6 and moved into sole possession of third place. This week does not offer a really exiting matchup the one game that could be interesting is Machebuf at Faith Christian. I don’t see Faith Christian losing this game and will stay in third place in league. Alameda travels to Denver West and should grab an easy win and Kent Denver travels to Denver North and they should also grab an easy victory.

There was one big game last week and that was between Academy and Bennett. Bennett grab a huge win against Academy 65 to 6 and the game was over since halftime. I did talk last week how I thought that Bennett was going to win this game and they came out and completely destroyed Academy. This win proves that once again the Frontier will either be won by Strasburg or Bennett. Strasburg won its game last week against Pinnacle 55 to 12. Both Bennett and Strasburg have picked up all three of its wins in league and that does not mean much due to the lack of strength of the Frontier League. This week there is not really a key game KIPP travels to Strasburg and should be an easy win for Strasburg and Jefferson travels to Bennett and Bennet should grab their fourth victory of the season. The interesting game will be if Academy can rebound against Sheridan. I believe that Academy will win this game but this still does not give them a key victory.

The key game of 2A happened in the Patriot league and that was between Platte Valley and Eaton. Platte Valley continued its strong form with a 26 to 6 win. That win will be crucial when it comes to playoff seeding and also on their path to winning a league crown. Brush was really tested against an improved Valley team winning 8 to 0. That narrow of a victory caused them to drop in the ranking after La Junta and Bayfield both won big. Sterling easily took care of business beating University 47 to 7. This week once again we have a pair of good games. Brush travels to Platte Valley in a monster game when it comes to the league crown. Platte Valley has been playing very good and come into this game winning 4 straight and their turn around is credited to their defense. Only once has their defense allowed over 7 points and that was in the loss to Resurrection Christian. Brush pulled of a really close one last week. Valley was able to shut down Brush offense holding them to 162 yards rushing. That is their lowest amount since their week one loss to Fort Morgan. Brush defense really was able to step up and hold Valley to a shutout. This game will come down to who can get their rushing attack working. The other good game will be between Sterling and Valley. Sterling has been on a nice roll since losing to Mead winning three straight games. Their rushing attack has improved every week and will look to match last week’s performance against University where they ran for 386 yards. Sterling’s offense has proven they can throw the ball as well throwing for 315 against Wray and 93 yards against University. Valley came close against Brush but couldn’t get any offense going. Valley has completely relied on their rushing attack to win them games averaging 249.6 ypg. Against Brush last week they only ran for 131 yards which is their second lowest amount. These two teams have a common opponent in Wray and both teams won big. This should be a good game Sterling is looking to stay tied for 1st place but Valley is looking to make some noise in the league race. Eaton should easily beat University for their first league win.

We had one big game last week when Trinidad faced off against Florence. Both teams were looking for big league win and possibly if everything falls right maybe a chance at finishing in the top 3 in league play. Florence was able to knock off Trinidad 29 to 7. Florence keeps their roller coaster season going and Trinidad is now looking for their first league win. The one key game this week is when Trinidad travels to Lamar. Lamar got back on track last week with a nice 49 to 14 victory over St. Mary’s. That gets Lamar moving in the right direction in league play. Trinidad will be looking to bounce back from that loss. They are looking for that key victory of the season and of course their first league win. A loss for Trinidad could really hurt them in terms of getting into the playoffs and competing for a league crown. Moving to 0-2 in league play puts them being the 8 ball especially if Florence and La Junta win this week. Lamar should be able to win this game and keep pace with La Junta and Florence who should both win easily.

Western Slope North
Week one in league was able to at least give us an early look at the very confusing Western Slope North League. Moffat County, Roaring Fork, and Basalt all were able to grab victories and a very early lead in the league race. This week two of the three teams that are in a tie for first place face off. Basalt will be on the road to Moffat County. Moffat County was able to get back into the win column with a nice 24 to 7 victory over Battle Mountain. That win is their 3rd this season and they are one of the two teams in the league with winning records. Basalt is now rolling with two straight victories last week they knocked off Coal Ridge 7 to 3 for their second win of the season. Last week against Coal Ridge they had just enough offense to win the game throwing for 65 yards and 80 yards rushing, which is well below their averages. This is a big game for one of these two teams getting off to a 2-0 start might be a huge advantage to grabbing the only guaranteed playoff spot. The other game of interest is Battle Mountain traveling to Roaring Fork. Roaring Fork has proven they can win big games when they were able to beat Meeker early in the season. This game has some huge implications. As I stated above a 2-0 start will be huge and could at least keep their hopes of grabbing a Wild Card Spot. Battle Mountain is looking to right the ship. They have started this season with a 1-3 record and a win here could go a long way to turning this season around. Going 0-2 in league will destroy any chance they have at getting into the playoffs but a 1-1 record gives them an outside chance of winning the league. Coal Ridge travels to Aspen in a game that will put one team at 0-2 in league and could help determine the order of which teams will finish.

The league started the way I figured it would. Bayfield continued their winning ways with a nice win over Olathe 42 to 7, Gunnison grabbed a good win against Montezuma Cortez 28 to 6, and Alamosa grabbed their first win of the season against Pagosa Springs. There are two good games this week and could help figure out the race for the league crown. The main attraction is Bayfield traveling to Gunnison. This pits two top ten team against each other. Bayfield has just been dominate this season starting off 4-0 and beating some quality opponents along the way. Their offense is led by the ground game but they keep you honest with their passing attack, what I believe is the strength of the Bayfield team is their Defense. It has been great so far this season and will look for that to continue this week. Gunnison was able to grab their second straight win of the season and put them in a position to challenge Bayfield for the league crown. I honestly believe the winner of this game will win the Western Slope South and the loser will either take second or third. Gunnison has faltered so far this season when it has come to facing quality opponents, Kent Denver and Monte Vista. This is their change to grab a monster league win. Gunnison will need their offense to wake up a little more. Gunnison strength besides their blowout loss to Kent Denver has been their defense. In their loss to Monte Vista they only gave up 9 points but did allow a 63 yard game winning touchdown pass. Gunnison will have a very tough task at stopping a very good rushing offense and one of the best defenses in 2A. The other good game will be between Alamosa and Olathe. Alamosa grabbed their first win of the season last week against Pagosa Springs and could possibly jump start their season. Alamosa has faced a tough schedule and could grab that elusive key win against Olathe. Going 2-0 in league could really help Alamosa out especially with Gunnison and Bayfield still on the schedule. Olathe had a very tough matchup against Bayfield and couldn’t get the job done. They will be looking to bounce back this week and really need to going 0-2 in league and still having Gunnison on the schedule could essentially knock them out of the league race. Olathe in my books should win this game but anything can happen in league play.
