Class 2A Football Week 5 Top Ten Breakdown
We have a brand new #1 team in Class 2A. Platte Valley has moved into the #1 slot after Bayfield fell to Durango (3A) last week. Bayfield falls to #4 due to Durango being ranked in the Top 10 in 3A. Resurrection Christians moves to #2 and La Junta jumps from #6 to #3 after beating Kent Denver. Rifle stays put at #5 and Basalt moves to #6. Berthoud is new to the rankings this week winning 3 straight games and a near win against #1 Platte Valley. Kent Denver falls to #10 after losing to La Junta. Aspen is a team to watch for if they continue to win they will be a team to watch in the Western Slope.
#1 Platte Valley (4-0)
Platte Valley played rival #8 Eaton last week and everyone knew this was going to be a battle. Platte Valley came out swinging in the second quarter scoring 16 points and that would be all they needed beating Eaton 26 to 7. Platte Valley played a very impressive non-league schedule and have the #3 RPI and #9 SOS (Strength of Schedule). Platte Valley has a bye this week and open league play next week against Weld Central. Platte Valley is my pick to win the Patriot East and having a bye right before league should get them refocused.
#2 Resurrection Christian (3-0)
Resurrection Christian continued their solid early season start beating Classical Academy 20 to 6. Resurrection Christian continues to play outstanding defense and still have not allowed an opponent to break the 7-point mark. Resurrection Christian defensively was led by Tanner Applebee and Zane Zuhlke both had 11 tackles. Offensively Resurrection Christian still has some things to work on, but their ground game did run for 173 yards and 3 TDs. This week Resurrection Christian will face Weld Central. Weld Central is off to a tough 0-3 start and their closest game was a 30 to 8 lose to University. Resurrection Christian should get their offense sorted out this week against Weld Central. Resurrection Christian though cannot overlook Weld Central to their huge league opener against #9 Berthoud.
#3 La Junta (4-0)
La Junta finished off their tough non-league schedule with an exclamation mark. La Junta was dominate in their 33 to 0 win over #10 Kent Denver. La Junta offensively had 358 yards of total offense and QB Jon Nuschy had a great day with 101 yards passing and 147 yards rushing and 3 total TDs. Defensively La Junta did a good job holding Kent Denver to 175 yards of total offense and recovering 1 fumble. La Junta non-league schedule increased as they moved down their schedule and their win over Kent Denver capped off their non-league season. La Junta will head into their bye week with the #2 RPI and #5 SOS. They open league play against Woodland Park and La Junta is my pick to win the Tri-Peaks.
#4 Bayfield (3-1)
Bayfield picked up their first loss of the season and their first loss since regular season loss since 2016 when they fell to Durango. This year Durango ended their winning streak against beating Bayfield 32 to 16. Bayfield was hit hard by the turnover bug with 4 Interceptions and QB Hayden Farmer will have some things to work on during their bye week. Defensively Bayfield did limit Durango to under 300 yards of offense, but the turnovers helped Durango with field position. Bayfield does have a week off to really fix any problems and prepare for their league season. The IML won’t be a cake walk with the 3 other teams having success and all will be looking to knock off Bayfield. Bayfield opens league play against Alamosa and this will be a very good test for both teams. Bayfield did play a tough non-league schedule and comes out with the #5 RPI and #2 SOS.
#5 Rifle (3-0)
Rifle is off to a solid start in their first season in 2A. Rifle last week was in a tough fight with Pueblo County. Rifle outscored Pueblo County 28 to 7 in the second half to pull out the 35 to 14 win. Rifle had a lot of success running the ball racking up 333 yards of rushing. Tanner Vines had a good day rushing for 179 yards and 2 TDs. Tanner Vines also led all tacklers for Rifle and Rifle held Pueblo county to 110 yards rushing. Rifle continues their stretch against 3A opponents this week when they face 3A Glenwood Springs. Glenwood Springs is 1-2 on the season and could be a tough matchup for Rifle. Glenwood Springs played Holy Family and Harrison tough and Rifle will have to bring their A game if they plan on moving to 4-0.
#6 Basalt (3-0)
Basalt moved to 3-0 on the season with a hard fought 31 to 0 victory over Pagosa Springs. Basalt came out took care of a team who has played tough against every opponent and showed they are contenders. Basalt offensively relied on their ground attack rushing for 249 yards. Jake Reardon led all rusher with 152 yards and 2 TDs. Defensively the Longhorns forced 4 turnovers. Basalt was led by Tai Kim (6 Tackles) and Henry Twitchell (5 tackles). Basalt this week faces #10 Paonia (1A). Basalt will have their defensive discipline tested by the double wing attack of Paonia. Basalt will be tested in their final non-league game, but they should be prepared for their league schedule.
#7 Salida (4-0)
Salida moved to 4-0 on the season after shutting out Buena Vista 43 to 0. Defensively the Spartans shutdown Buena Vista offense holding them to just 77 yards of total offense. Salida was able to keep QB Parker Johnson contained and really hampered the Buena Vista offense. Salida was led by Vince Deleo (9 tackles) and Holt Brashears (8 tackles) and forced 2 turnovers. Offensively Salida continues to improve racking up 263 yards rushing and 86 yards passing. Vince Deleo led all rusher with 192 yards and 4 TDs and QB Zayne Walker had 86 yards passing and 1 TD. This was another good win for Salida. Salida will be playing their fifth and final non-league game this week against 1A Cedaredge. Cedaredge is 1-2 on the season and fell big to Aspen 48 to 12. Salida must continue to play tough and they should be prepared when the league season kicks off.
#8 Eaton (2-1)
Eaton picked up their first loss of the season but stayed ranked falling just short to #1 Platte Valley 26 to 7. Eaton had some success on offense, but the turnover bug did get to them throwing 2 interceptions. Eaton defensively did play tough, but Platte Valley was able to get points on the board. Eaton does have a lot of new starters this year and the tough non-league schedule they played will have them prepared going forward. Eaton will continue to improve as the year goes on. This week Eaton will face Machebeuf. Machebeuf is 2-1 but Machebeuf was blown out by Elizabeth last week. Eaton, I think will bounce back this week and continue to gain experience.
#9 Berthoud (3-1)
Berthoud moved into the rankings this week finishing their non-league schedule winning 3 straight games and their last 2 against 3A opponents. Berthoud has found the answer on offense at QB with Jake Lozinski. Lozinski against Thompson Valley last week had 182 yards passing and 92 yards rushing and 4 total TDs. Berthoud continues to improve defensively as well. Berthoud has not given up over 16 points and look to be a real threat inside the Patriot West this season. Berthoud has a bye this week and will have an extra week to prepare for Resurrection Christian. Berthoud is #9 in the RPI and have the #15 SOS.
#10 Kent Denver (2-1)
Kent Denver picked up their first loss of the season to #3 La Junta last week. Kent Denver struggled to get their passing game going as QB Joey Licht threw for just 20 yards. Kent Denver had some success running the ball rushing for 155 yards. Kent Denver was probably shown the weaknesses they had on offense and will try and get them fixed for this week’s game. Defensively the Sun Devils had a hard time stopping the run giving up 257 yards rushing. Things do not get easier for Kent Denver this week when they face 3A Pueblo Centennial. Pueblo Centennial is 2-1 on the season and this should be a tough game for Kent Denver. Once Kent Denver finishes their non-league schedule this week things will get a bit easier in League with only one real contender. Kent Denver will have to play well against Pueblo Centennial if they plan on grabbing the win.
