Class 1A Football Week 7 League Breakdown
We are two games into the league schedule in most leagues and this week we will take a much deeper look at the RPI for each league and which teams have a shot at the playoffs or a league title. Next week I will probably grab the top 28 teams and try and figure out if they have any shot at the playoffs, I can do this by making a few assumptions and can figure out teams OWP.
Two teams sit at the top of the Foothills Standings, Platte Canyon and Manual. Platte Canyon has wins over Clear Creek and Jefferson the two biggest challengers to the league title. Manual has played Sheridan and Lake County and have yet to face Clear Creek and Jefferson. Clear Creek and Jefferson both sit tied for 2nd and try and improve their RPI for the playoff hunt. Platte Canyon this week faces Sheridan and may get a Forfeit as Sheridan has forfeit their past two games. Platte Canyon if they play should cruise to a win and stay at 3-0 in league. Clear Creek also should move to 2-1 in league as they play Lake County. Lake County has struggled this season a bit with only 1 win. Clear Creek is 4-3 overall and their high-powered offense should have plenty of success. The big game in the Foothills league is Jefferson traveling to Manual. Jefferson is 4-2 overall but have not played a tough schedule. Their SOS is 40 out of 40. Jefferson is hoping to pick up a big win and try and improve their RPI. Manual is hoping to stay tied with Platte Canyon a top the league standings, but this won’t be an easy game. Their pass defense will have to be strong and they must get their offense going. The winner will have a huge advantage in terms of Standings and RPI. Looking at the RPI Sheridan and Lake County are eliminated from the Playoff race. Manual and Jefferson are outside the Top 30 but they play each other, and the winner will be alive still for the playoffs and the loser will be in trouble. Clear Creek is at #24 and will need to win out to have any shot at being an at large-berth. Platte Canyon is in the Top 16 but needs to improve to the Top 10 for a guaranteed home game. Platte Canyon won’t get much help with their remaining league schedule being very weak.
RPI: #14 Platte Canyon, #24 Clear Creek, #31 Jefferson, #32 Manual, #35 Sheridan, #39 Lake County
North Central League
The North Central League has two teams at the top, Limon and Burlington. Both teams sit at 2-0 and in fact play each other this week. Burlington will have the home field advantage and are coming off a huge overtime win over Holyoke. Burlington defensively have played outstanding in back to back games and will need a third straight game of defensive domination. Burlington offensively has done enough to win games but this week face probably the toughest defense they have faced this year. Limon enters the game undefeated and have plenty of key wins on the season. Limon biggest non-league win was the 36-6 win over #2 Strasburg. Limon last week blasted Yuma 40-6 and they are clicking on all cylinders. Limon will now face three straight weeks of tough games with Holyoke and Wray remaining on their schedule. Limon will have to get their offense going against a very good defense but also must be ready for a balanced offensive attack from Burlington. Limon is my pick in this game but should be a great game. Another huge game in the North Central features the two teams tied at 1-1. Wray travels to Holyoke and the winner will move into a tie with the loser of the Burlington vs Limon game. Holyoke picked up their first loss of the season falling in OT to Burlington. Holyoke proved that their defense is very good. Holyoke offensively still has somethings to work on, but their defense has been key to them winning games. Holyoke this week faces a very physical rushing attack. Wray blasted Wiggins last week 49-20 and the score was closer than the game. Wray scored 41 points in the first half and 8 in the third to get the mercy rule going. Wray had no problems running the ball rushing for over 300 yards. Wray offensively must have the same production if they plan on beat Holyoke. Wray defensively also must play physical. This should be a great game and I am leaning towards Wray in this game. One last game to mention is Yuma vs Wiggins. This is a big game for Yuma they need a win desperately and a loss would kill their RPI. Looking at the RPI only Wiggins is eliminated from the playoff race. Yuma is at #16 and as mentioned a loss to Wiggins would hurt their RPI and probably put them on the edge of elimination. Wray is #15 and a loss to Holyoke won’t kill their RPI but puts much bigger emphasis on their last 2 games. Holyoke is #10 and a loss to Wray wouldn’t hurt their RPI either but would then need to win at least 1 of their final 2 games. Burlington and Limon are both in the Top 5 of the RPI and are near locks for the playoffs. We will have to see what happens to the losers RPI, but I am guessing it won’t change very much.
RPI: #1 Limon, #5 Burlington, #10 Holyoke, #15 Wray, #16 Yuma, #34 Wiggins
Two teams have risen to the top of the Northern League standings. Strasburg and Cornerstone Christian are 2-0 in league but don’t play each other till the final game of the season and we won’t decide the league champion till then. Strasburg last week picked up a huge 18-0 win over Highland to move them to 2-0 and a huge head to head win over a second place team. Strasburg faces Pinnacle this week and should cruise past them and move to 3-0. Cornerstone Christian play a much tougher opponent this week. Cornerstone Christian hosts Highland. Highland lost to Strasburg last week but played them tough holding them to 18 points. Highland struggled offensively but their defense has improved. Highland this week faces another tough defense and must get their offense going. The good thing is Highland defense should have success again. Cornerstone Christian comes into the game at 4-2 overall including 3 straight wins. Cornerstone Christian has played tough defense all year giving up just 61 points. The big knock on Cornerstone Christian is their offense they have scored just 119 points and in big games have struggled the most. Cornerstone Christian must get solid play from their offense is they plan on staying in a tie with Strasburg. I am going with Cornerstone Christian to win this game and stay tied with Strasburg.
RPI: #3 Strasburg, #18 Highland, #19 Cornerstone Christian, #28 Estes Park, #37 Lyons, #40 Pinnacle
Santa Fe League
After last week only two teams remain at the Top of the Santa Fe League. Peyton and Crowley County both are 2-0 and don’t play each other till next week and the league title will probably be decided then. This week Peyton travels to Rocky Ford and Crowley County travels to John Mall. Both top teams will look to avoid the trap game. Peyton vs Rocky Ford will be a good test for Peyton secondary. Rocky Ford picked up their first league win least week blanking Ellicott 45-0. Rocky Ford passing attack is their main weapon and if they are on point are a tough team to stop. Peyton offensively should have no problems running the ball. Peyton though defensively will have to be on point to avoid a shoot-out type game. Crowley County at John Mall is a very interesting game. John Mall has shown glimpses of being a tough team, but their inexperience has cost them. John Mal I think is a year or 2 out for being in the discussion for the league title. Crowley County has bounced back well since losing to Limon 4 weeks ago. Crowley County did not play last week but will have to be ready to stop the run. Their offense will have to be on point as well as John Mall is much improved on the defensive side of the ball. I do think that both Peyton and Crowley County will win but they will have to avoid looking past both teams. The lone game not mentioned is Trinidad vs Ellicott. Both teams are looking for their first win. RPI wise only Trinidad is truly eliminated from the playoff race. Ellicott is #30 and in my eyes are eliminated from the playoffs but a couple wins could shoot them up the RPI standings. John Mall and Rocky Ford at in the mid 20’s and both will probably be in the same spot after this week if they both lose. Both of these teams will have to run the table if they plan on grabbing a playoff berth, but it will be a huge uphill battle. Crowley County is #7 and Peyton is #2 and both should nearly lock up playoff berths with wins this week.
RPI: #2 Peyton, #7 Crowley County, #25 Rocky Ford, #26 John Mall, #30 Ellicott, #36 Trinidad
Southern Peaks League
The Southern Peaks League is all wrapped up in my eyes and could be made official with one win this week. Centauri is 3-0 in the Southern Peaks league and Dolores has already forfeited to them. That means if Monte Vista beats Ignacio that Centauri is your official league champion. Centauri beat Monte Vista easily last week 45-8 and had the mercy rule going by halftime. Centauri speed on offense and strength on defense has powered the way. I see Centauri as a state champion threat once again. Only one other league game to talk about and it’s an elimination game for both teams. Monte Vista hosts Ignacio. Ignacio lost to Center last week 12-6. They had multiple chances to win the game but came up just short in OT. Ignacio will now have to bounce back and face another huge task. Monte Vista also will have to bounce back after losing to Centauri. Monte Vista will be the favorite in the game and they are fighting for their playoff lives. Monte Vista must get their offense going but also must improve defensively. I am taking Monte Vista to snag the win and keep their playoff hopes alive. Center plays a non-league game with St. Mary’s and this is a huge game in terms of RPI. Center is at #17 and a win over St. Mary’s keep their playoff hopes alive but also gives them some momentum for their rivalry game against Monte Vista next week. In terms of RPI Centauri is a lock for the playoffs with their league bid and RPI wise. Center and Monte Vista both are in the Top 20 but at the minimum need 2 of their final 3 wins and it may come down to their matchup next week on who gets into the playoffs. Ignacio is barely holding on to hope and a loss to Monte Vista would eliminate them but a win would give them hope.
RPI: #4 Centauri, #17 Center, #20 Monte Vista, #29 Ignacio, #33 Dolores
After last week’s results two teams have risen to the top of the standings and they are Colorado Springs Christian and Florence. Colorado Springs Christian played Buena Vista last week surged past them in the second half scoring 33 points. CSCS now owns a very important head to head win over Buena Vista and has some momentum heading into this week’s game. CSCS travels to Rye this week. CSCS will be the favorite in this game but Rye is improving weekly. Rye won big last week 44-0 over Dolores but Rye will have to find a way to stop the run this week. Rye has not played well against top teams but if they pulled the upset would surge them into the Top 16 of the RPI. CSCS cannot overlook any opponent and must continue to play outstanding defense. CSCS has given up just 43 points this season and their offense has been electric scoring 235 points. CSCS has been led by their rushing attack and they will need it again this week. CSCS is my pick in this game. The other league game is a big one featuring Buena Vista vs Florence. Buena Vista had a tale of two halves. Buena Vista held CSCS to just 14 points in the first half but fell flat in the second half giving up 33 points. Buena Vista will have to quickly bounce back and be ready for another huge game. Buena Vista defensively will once again focus on stopping the run. Florence picked up their second league win beating St. Mary’s 42 to 3. Florence has played well this year going 5-1 overall with their lone loss to Peyton. Florence offensively must continue to improve. Defensively Florence is tough but will have to deal with a solid offensive attack from Buena Vista. Florence is my pick in this game due to their defense. RPI wise all 5 teams are still alive for the playoff hunt. St. Mary’s is the closest to being eliminated and a loss to Center this week would eliminate them. Rye is #22 in the RPI and even with a loss to CSCS would still be alive for the playoff hunt. Rye would need to win their final 2 games but still have a shot. Buena Vista is #12 and this game with Florence will could determine a ton. A lose won’t kill Buena Vista but would probably drop them to either #16 or #17. That would make their final two games must wins. Florence and Peyton are probably both 1 win away from locking up playoff berths but we will have to see after this week.
RPI: #6 Colorado Springs Christian, #9 Florence, #12 Buena Vista, #22 Rye, #27 St. Mary’s,
Western Slope League
Paonia and Meeker once again top the league standings in the Western Slope League and they square off once again this week. Meeker is on a 2-game winning streak and are 3-2 on the year. Meeker last week blanked Cedaredge 34-0. Meeker continues to improve every week and they have played Limon the closest this year. Meeker is a young team and their defense must play disciplined this week. Meeker offensively also must get good production from their QB and get some sort of rushing attack going. Meeker has shown glimpses at how good they can be but their defense will have to play outstanding this week. Paonia has proven that they can continue to reload and not rebuild. Paonia has surprised me a bit this year but they have a great coaching staff and he is utilizing his players perfectly. Paonia offensively really tests teams defensive discipline. Paonia defensively has been outstanding giving up just 54 points on the year. Paonia on defense will be tested in the secondary this week. This should be a very good game and I am taking Paonia in a very close game. The two other games this week are Hotchkiss at Olathe and Cedaredge at Grand Valley. Olathe and Grand Valley are both 1-1 overall and hope to move to 2-1. Olathe should be able to bounce back after last week’s loss. Olathe will focus on stopping the run but also must get their offense going. Grand Valley will be in a very tough game with Cedaredge. This is a huge game for the victor with the loser on the fringe of being eliminated from the playoff race. RPI wise only Hotchkiss is eliminated from the playoff race. Grand Valley and Cedaredge are both in the Top 25 and play each other. The winner will increase their playoff hopes and the loser will be in trouble. Meeker and Olathe are in the Top 15. Olathe needs a win over Hotchkiss to hold down a Top 15 spot. Meeker with a loss shouldn’t drop to much but a win will probably move them into the Top 10. Paonia is the lone Top 10 RPI team. They will hold the spot still with a win over Meeker, but a loss will probably move them outside the Top 10.
RPI: #8 Paonia, #11 Olathe, #13 Meeker, #21 Grand Valley, #23 Cedaredge, #38 Hotchkiss
