Football 8-Man Final Playoff Projections

Latest RPI Rankings: http://chsaanow.com/rpi/football/ .  With a couple games today and the latest RPI being released this morning we can put are final Playoff Projections out.  Of course the Top 16 teams get in but a seeding committee will seed the tournament.  What I am going to do is follow the seeding rules and try and seed the 8-Man field.

Playoffs (Straight from Chsaanow.com): The Top 16 teams in the Classification based on the final RPI rankings will be placed into the post-season bracket.  If a conference champion is not ranked in the Top 16 based on RPI rankings, they will replace the lowest ranked team that is not a conference champion in the Top 16.

Seeding Criteria (once qualifiers are determined)

  • The following criteria will be taken into consideration when seeding bracket, in no particular order: geography, RPI, common opponents, strength of schedule, and head to head competition
  • A conference champion in the Top-10 of the seeded playoff bracket will host a first round game, unless they are playing another league champion. Once seeded, the seeds of the team will not change regardless of who hosts the game.
  • A conference champion not ranked in the top 10 of the seeded playoff bracket will be placed in the bracket but will not host a first round game.
  • A conference champion not ranked in the Top 16 of the final RPI rankings will be placed in the bracket, but will not be guaranteed a top 10 seed and will not be guaranteed to host a first round game.
  • Conference opponents will not be paired against one another in the first round.
  • Geography will be consideration in the first round

Seeding Procedure

  • Conference champions that are ranked in the top 16 of the RPI rankings are placed on the board for consideration.
  • The seeding committee will determine the #1 overall seed and place that team on the bracket. The #2 team for the same conference as the #1 overall seed will then be placed on the board for consideration.  The seeding committee will then determine the #2 overall seed and place that team on the bracket.  The #2 team from the same conference s the #2 overall seed will then be placed on the board for consideration.  This process followed until all 16 teams are seeded.

Arkansas Valley League: Hoehne (5)

Central League: Front Range Christian (22)

Mountain League: Mancos (2)

Northwest League: West Grand (1)

Plains League: Sedgwick County (4)

Southern League: Pikes Peak Christian (10)

At Large Berths

Rangely, Caliche, Sargent, Fowler, Vail Christian, Holly, Akron, Dayspring Christian, Merino, Simla

First Four Out

Sanford, Dove Creek, Soroco, Norwood

Host First Round Game

West Grand, Mancos, Rangely, Sedgwick County, Hoehne, Caliche, Sargent, Pikes Peak Christian

First Round Matchups (All Seeding Rules, RPI, and favor League Champions)

#1 West Grand vs #16 Front Range Christian

#8 Pikes Peak Christian vs #9 Holly

#4 Rangely vs #13 Akron

#5 Hoehne vs #12 Dayspring Christian

#3 Sedgwick County vs #14 Simla

#6 Caliche vs #11 Holly

#7 Sargent vs #10 Vail Christian

#2 Mancos vs #15 Merino

Note: I am going to favor league championships in my seeding of the Top 4.  Due to that I am putting Sedgwick County over Rangely for the #3 spot.  Rangely though would not drop below Hoehne at #5.  Caliche and Sargent also grab at large berths but will host.  Pikes Peak Christian I have at #8.  The real question comes into play at seeding 9 through 11.  Do you put a #3 West Slope team ahead of #2 Ark Valley team.  I am going with Holly at #9 and Vail Christian at #10, and Fowler at #11.  I swapped Fowler and Vail Christian for geography purposes especially for Vail Christian.  Dayspring Christian has to be placed above Akron for finishing 3rd in the plains league which is why they are #12 and Akron at #13.  Merino would be #14 but due to being in the same league with Sedgwick County I moved them to #15 and will make a long trek to Mancos.  Simla would move to #14 and Front Range Christian is #16.  My big concern is Merino long trek and the 9 through 11 seeding.  I am going to go through one more scenario.

First Round Matchups (RPI, Seeding Rules, and Avoid League Matchups)

#1 West Grand vs #16 Front Range Christian

#8 Pikes Peak Christian vs #9 Vail Christian

#4 Sedgwick County vs #13 Simla

#5 Hoehne vs #12 Dayspring Christian

#3 Rangely vs #14 Akron

#6 Caliche vs #11 Fowler

#7 Sargent vs #10 Holly

#2 Mancos vs #15 Merino

Note: I used RPI and only this seeding rule:

  • The seeding committee will determine the #1 overall seed and place that team on the bracket. The #2 team for the same conference as the #1 overall seed will then be placed on the board for consideration.  The seeding committee will then determine the #2 overall seed and place that team on the bracket.  The #2 team from the same conference s the #2 overall seed will then be placed on the board for consideration.  This process followed until all 16 teams are seeded.
