Class 1A State Tournament Recap

Class 1A was just like Class 2A with two upsets both in the same spot in the bracket.  #9 Haxtun came out in the opening match and played #8 Springfield.  Haxtun was down 2-0 early and Springfield came out and opened the match with two set wins.  Haxtun then won three straight sets to advance to the 2nd round.  #5 Merino also advanced getting past a tough Sangre De Cristo team 3-1.  #6 McClave also moved into the 2ndround beating #11 Dove Creek.  #10 Fleming vs #7 Walsh had the second upset of the first round.  Fleming lost the first set 25-17 and then won three straight sets dominating in all three 25-11, 25-16, and 25-11.  Fleming was very impressive in those three sets and gained some momentum heading into the second round.  Defending state champion Kit Carson kicked off the 2nd round sweeping Haxtun 3-0.  Kit Carson was very impressive in the match not allowing over 20 points in any of the sets.  Match #2 also featured an upset and what a match it was.  #4 Weldon Valley faced off against #5 Merino.  Merino came out and set the tone winning the first two sets 25-21, 25-22.  You just knew that Weldon Valley was going to fight back and they did wining the 3rdand 4th sets 25-16, 27-25.  The fifth set was very close early on with both teams going back and forth.  Merino got some momentum around the 7-6 mark and pushed to a 15-9 victory.  The 3rd match of the day had #3 La Veta face #6 McClave.  La Veta was very impressive sweeping McClave 25-21, 25-16, and 25-15.  La Veta opened the tournament like I figured they would and hoping to show they can contend for a title.  The final match of the second round was #2 Otis vs upset minded #10 Fleming.  The first two sets of this match were a marathon event with Otis winning the first set 33-31 and the second set 29-27.  Fleming then took the 3rd set 25-14.  In the fourth Set Otis was able to set the tone and win the 4th set 25-20.  Friday started in the Contenders Bracket with #4 Weldon Valley vs #11 Dove Creek.  Weldon Valley bounced back from their upset with the sweep of Dove Creek.  Dove Creek played tough but came up just short.  #9 Haxtun vs #7 Walsh was game #2.  Haxtun was dominate sweeping Walsh and moving onto the next round.  Match #3 of the morning was #10 Fleming vs #8 Springfield.  Fleming came out on fire and sweep Springfield.  The final first round match keeps things in moving quickly.  #12 Sangre De Cristo faced #6 McClave.  Both came off tough losses and Sangre De Cristo bounced back sweeping McClave.  McClave nearly pulled off set #3 but fell 29-27.  We moved back into the Winners Bracket with #1 Kit Carson vs #5 Merino.  Kit Carson would win set 1 but Merino showed their grit winning set 2.  Kit Carson then kicked it into gear winning the final two sets and the match.  The final Winners bracket game was #2 Otis vs #3 La Veta.  La Veta was dominate sweeping Otis and doing so in big fashion 25-9, 25-17, 25-17.  La Veta and Kit Carson both punched their tickets into the semifinals.  Two matches left on Friday and two spots left to fill for Saturday.  #4 Weldon Valley vs #9 Haxtun kicked things off.  Weldon Valley was able to dominate in the sweep and punch their ticket to Saturday.  #10 Fleming vs #12 Sangre De Cristo was a good one to end the night on.  Fleming grabbed the early momentum winning the first two sets.  Sangre De Cristo should their toughness winning the next to sets to force a fifth set.  Fleming then dug deep and won the fifth set 15-8 to move onto Saturday.  Sangre De Cristo showed their toughness this year.  5 Matches on Saturday and 1 team hoping to remain at the top.  We had to elimination games left #2 Otis vs #4 Weldon Valley.  This was another thriller.  Otis was able to gain the early advantage winning the first two sets.  Weldon Valley never said die and came out firing winning the final three sets to punch their ticket into the semifinals.  Fleming keep things rolling and upset #5 Merino 3-0 to punch their ticket into the semifinals.  In Semifinal #1, Kit Carson faced Weldon Valley.  Kit Carson kept things rolling winning the first two sets.  Weldon Valley hung tough and won set #3.  Kit Carson though was able to snag a big win and move into the state championship 3-1.  Semifinal #2 was La Veta vs Fleming.  La Veta and Fleming traded the first two sets.  La Veta then regained composure winning set 3 and 4 to punch their ticket to the state championship.  Fleming played well and going 4-1 is very impressive.  The State Championship was a good one with Kit Carson closest 1A win over La Veta 3-2 during the regular season.  La Veta came out hot winning set #1 25-19.  Kit Carson bounced back though winning 25-18.  I honestly think the deciding set of the match was set 3.  Kit Carson was able to hold on to win set 3 26-24 and the winner of this set knew the advantage was theirs.  Kit Carson closed out the match 25-21 to win the State Championship and their second in a row.
