8-Man Football Semifinals Breakdown and Predictions

#5 Hoehne vs #8 Pikes Peak Christian

This year 8-man has been very tough to judge and good a good grip on and that continued last week with some very good football games.  Hoehne last week faced off against Rangely and what a game it was.  Hoehne jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead but Rangely fought back in the second quarter to make it 22-14.  The Third quarter saw Rangely tie the game up and the game would come down to the fourth quarter.  Hoehne rose up to the challenge and scored 14 unanswered in the fourth quarter to seal the 36-22 win for Hoehne.  Offensively Hoehne had a big day racking up 443 yards of total offense.  QB Weston Hill was 4 for 4 for 94 yards and 1 TD.  The rushing attack had a big day rushing for 349 yards.  RB Kyle Rowe led all rushers with 208 yards and RB Trysten Moltrer was #2 with 85 yards.  Hoehne offense is more ground attack oriented but their passing attack has played well as of late.  Defensively Hoehne forced 2 turnovers and had 2 sacks in the game.  Federico Orozco and Trysten Moltrer led all tacklers with 14.  Hoehne defense stepped up when it mattered in the 4th quarter but they will have to be on point against a very tough Pikes Peak Christian team.

Pikes Peak Christian continued their march in the playoffs.  Pikes Peak Christian pulled a big upset knocking off #1 West Grand 29 to 28.  The difference in the game was a 37-yard field goal to give Pikes Peak Christian the 1 point lead.  Pikes Peak Christian has played well all season and their lone loss was to Merino when Merino was at full strength.  This week Pikes Peak Christian defense must be able to stop a physical rushing attack.  Offensively they will face another tough defense and we will continue to see if they can continue to rise to the challenge.

This will be another tough physical football game.  Pikes Peak Christian proved last week they can play with anyone.  Now they are hoping to pull off their second straight upset.  Pikes Peak Christian will have to play great run defense.  Offensively Pikes Peak Christian plays another top defense.  Hoehne is playing good football and beat a very good Rangely team.  Hoehne now has to be ready for a Pikes Peak Christian team who is on a hot streak.  Hoehne must get their rushing attack going and they must take care of the football.  I am going with Hoehne in this game.  I think their rushing attack will help them control this game.

#3 Sedgwick County vs #15 Merino

For the past two years we have had a double-digit seed get hot at the right time and advance into the semifinals.  Last year it was Soroco who peaked at the right team beating Merino and advancing into the Semifinals.  Merino is now that team to advance into the semifinals as the #15 seed.  Merino as mentioned last week is finally healthy and are playing some of the best football of the year.  Just looking at Merino past three wins over Sedgwick County, Mancos, and Holly you see a team who is playing their best football at the right time.  Merino now has a huge task of trying to upset Sedgwick County twice in the same season.  Merino will have to probably match if not exceed the level of football they played when they faced them three weeks ago.

Sedgwick County advanced into the semifinals winning a physical hard-fought football game against Caliche 28-16.  Sedgwick County had to step up on defense and they did that holding Caliche to 186 yards rushing.   Sedgwick County defense also forced 1 fumble.  Layne Green and Beau Parker led Sedgwick County in tackles.  Sedgwick County defense has proven they can play with any type of offensive play style and have shown that in the playoffs.  Offensively Sedgwick County racked up 276 yards of total offense.  QB Ethan Walter led the passing attack with 98 yards passing and 1 TD.  The rushing attack had 178 yards of rushing and were led by Layne Green (76) and Beau Parker (64).  Offensively Sedgwick County will hope to fix the mistakes from their first time match up with Merino.

A huge rematch in the semifinals and emotions will be high for this game.  Merino is hoping to shock Sedgwick County twice in the same season.  Merino will focus on stopping the running attack and force Sedgwick County to beat them thru the air.  Merino offensively must have a big day from RB Matt Frank.  Merino will have a shot to pull this huge upset again but will have to play their best game of the season yet again.  Sedgwick County will be hoping to get revenge for their early season loss.  Sedgwick County has seemed to fair well when they have either lost during the regular season or when they have played a close game.  Sedgwick County always seems to bounce back after those games and win big in the playoffs.  They cannot rely on history of course and must take control of the game for themselves.  Offensively they must be able to run the ball to open the passing attack up.  Defensively Sedgwick County must have a big day stopping the run.  This is going to be a battle of a game and I expect a close game yet again.  I am going with Sedgwick County in this game.  I think it’s always tough to upset a team twice in the season and both teams will know what is coming at them.  I could easily see this game being within 10 points with turnovers and defense being the reason for winning.
