8-Man Football State Championship Breakdown and Predictions

#3 Sedgwick County #5 Hoehne

Here we go the State Championship week for the smaller schools.  The environments for the state championships are outstanding and most small communities rally around these events.  Sedgwick County will host the event.  This is quite the drive for Hoehne, but I am guessing Hoehne will travel well and will have this event at near capacity.

Sedgwick County is your 3-time defending state champion and are looking for the rare 4-peat.  Sedgwick County reached the state championship by avenging their only regular season loss.  Sedgwick County Beat Merino 32-0.  Sedgwick County used a 16-point third quarter to create some distance between them and Merino.  Merino had a great run to even get to the semifinals and played tough against Sedgwick County again.  Sedgwick County was ready this time around and had a big day of offense.  Sedgwick County racked up 358 total yards of offense.  The passing attack did struggle with just 12 yards, but the rushing attack had a great day with 346 yards of rushing.  Beau Parker led all rusher with 151 yards and Layne Green had 3 TD’s and 105 yards rushing.  Defensively Sedgwick County was able to adjust to Merino offense and held them to around 100 yards rushing.  Sedgwick County also forced 3 fumbles in the game.  Dalton Carlson led all tackles with 8 and Layne Green was second with 6.  Sedgwick County playoff run has been fueled by their good offensive line and their rushing attack. Since entering the playoffs Sedgwick County has churned out 755 yards of rushing.  The passing attack of Sedgwick County has not had as much success but it’s good enough to keep teams honest and can be used as a weapon.  The running game for Sedgwick County is led by Layne Green 318 yards rushing and 8 TD’s and Beau Parker 274 yards and 2 TD’s.  Sedgwick County offensive line has really stepped up in the postseason and they need another big game against a physical opponent.  Sedgwick County defensively has given up 22 points in the playoffs.  Sedgwick County defense is one of the best in 8-Man and have made plenty of critical stops.  Layne Green, Dalton Carlson, Jaciel Villalobos, and Beau Parker have led Sedgwick County in tackles.  Sedgwick County will now have a rematch on their hands and will need their defense to really come and play one more time to try and pull the 4-peat.

Hoehne returns to the State championship for the first time since 2010 when they won the 8-Man title.  Hoehne has made the playoffs nearly every year and I know 3 of the past 4 years their playoff runs have ended with losses to Sedgwick County.  Hoehne booked their ticket to the state championship beating a hot Pikes Peak Christian team 50-8.  Hoehne used a 22-point third quarter to create separation and to really take control of the football game.  No teams posted stats for the game but Hoehne did a real good job of stopping Pikes Peak Christian and I am sure Hoehne rushing attack came to play.  Hoehne playoff run has been led by their rushing attack which has been phenomenal and a powerful offensive line.  In just two games (third game has not stats) Hoehne has ran for 776 yards.  Trysten Moltrer has led all rushers with 356 yards and 4 TD’s but Kyle Rowe has really stepped up and has ran for 344 yards and 7 TD’s.  Hoehne rushing attack is key to their success and Hoehne offensive line must come to play this week. Hoehne passing attack has also had some success this postseason and must really come forth to open the rushing attack.  Defensively Hoehne has given up some point around 54 points this postseason but their defense has made critical stops and forced turnovers when needed.  Hoehne leading tackler is Federico Orozco 31 tackles and Robert Walter is #2 with 18 tackles.  Hoehne will be looking to avenge their early season loss to Sedgwick County and show how much they have improved since the beginning of the year.

This should be a great matchup and is also a rematch which will make this game much more interesting.  These two teams played each other way back on August 31st and you can nearly toss that game out of the window.  Both teams have made changes since then.  Offensively both teams can score points and both teams must have big day running the ball.  Sedgwick County has a two-headed monster in Layne Green and Beau Parker.  Sedgwick County will also need Ethan Walter to step up and make some big pass plays.  Hoehne also has a two-headed monster in Trysten Moltrer and Kyle Rowe.  QB Weston Hill has made some big strides for Hoehne and his success could help Hoehne.  Defensively Sedgwick County leads the way with only 22 points given up.  They will have to have a huge day stopping the run and will have to play physical football.  Hoehne defense really stepped up last week giving up just 8 points to Pikes Peak Christian.  Hoehne has given up points but their defense has really stepped up to the plate.  The first times these two teams meet it was 40 to 8.  I think this score will be much closer this time around.  I am going with Sedgwick County in this game but Hoehne will give them their best shot and it believe this game will be within 10 points.  I am going with Sedgwick County due to their defense.
