Girls Basketball District Predictions Class 2A

In Class 2A things are much different than 3A.  In Class 2A you must finish in the Top 4 of your district to make it to Regionals (5 for District 5 or 3 for District 3).  Class 2A also gives the league champion the right to host a regional.  Changes are based so far on how teams have performed, SOS, head to head match ups and quality wins.

District 1

  1. Del Norte
  2. Sanford
  3. Sargent
  4. Center

District 1 seems to be playing out as expected.  Del Norte is the clear front runner, but Sanford has proven they can challenge Del Norte for the top spot.  Del Norte did beat Sanford, but it was a great battle and more than likely Del Norte will have to beat Sanford 2 more times to win this District which is not an easy feat.  Sanford has proven they are the clear #2 team in the District.  Sanford beat Sargent by 21 points and played Del Norte close.  Sargent holds on to the #3 spot.  Sargent has taken care of business against Center snagging the league win.  Sargent also beat South Park and Custer County to pick up two important league wins.  Sargent faces a huge challenge this weekend against South Park.  Center keeps ahold of the #4 spot but must beat Crested Butte and Custer County to lock up the #4 seed.  My picks for Regionals are: #1 Del Norte, #2 Sanford, #3 Sargent, #4 Center.

District 2

  1. Yuma
  2. Wray
  3. Holyoke
  4. Wiggins

Yuma has locked up the #1 seed for the District tournament.  Their remaining game Holyoke is a non-league game (at least that what is says on maxpreps).  Wray can lock up the #2 seed if they beat Wiggins tonight 2/7.  Wray will have one more good test against Merino on the schedule.  The #3 seed can also nearly be locked up when Holyoke faces Akron tonight.  Holyoke with a win over Akron locks up the #3 seed.  Holyoke beat Wiggins 61-23 to lock up the #3 spot.  Wiggins would need a bit of help to snag a top 3 seed and an upset of Wray could do that.  Akron looks like a solid pick for the #5 seed.  My picks for regionals are: #1 Yuma, #2 Wray, #3 Holyoke, and #4 Wiggins.  Wiggins will have to hold off Akron for that #4 spot as they went into OT the last time they meet.

District 3 (Only 3 teams make it to Regionals)

  1. Ignacio
  2. Dolores
  3. Ridgway

District 3 is all but wrapped up for Ignacio.  Ignacio is 10-0 in league and 11-4 overall.  Ignacio still has to face Mancos one last time and big non-league game against Del Norte on 2/5 and Pagosa Springs on 2/15 will test Ignacio.  The #2 seed looks like Dolores has stepped up and is 6-4 in league and 8-8 overall.  Dolores should wrap up the #2 seed with a win over Telluride this weekend.  Ridgway has pushed into the #3 spot and their win over Mancos has basically secured the #3 seed for Ridgway.  My picks for Regionals are: #1 Ignacio, #2 Dolores, #3 Ridgway.

District 4

  1. Limon
  2. Byers
  3. Denver Christian
  4. Clear Creek

District 4 has a front runner with Limon being the favorite to win District 4.  Seeding will be key for the District tournament.  I believe they use RPI to seed the District tournament.  Using the most recent RPI Limon would be the #1 seed, Byers is the #2 seed, Denver Christian is the #3 seed, Lotus School the #4, and Clear Creek the #5 seed.  Avoiding the top 3 seeds is always the key.  Limon has two games remaining on their schedule.  Limon faces Byers which could determine the #1 seed if they use head to head and Limon also faces Swink which is a solid non-league test for the Badgers.  Byers has two games against Limon and Peyton both quality opponents and should help determine how much Byers has improved.  Denver Christian nearly upset Byers losing in OT.  Denver Christian has two quality opponents remaining against Highland and Dawson School.  Denver Christian could really improve their RPI and jump Byers if they can win their final two games.  My picks for Regionals are: #1 Limon, #2 Byers, #3 Denver Christian, and #4 Clear Creek.

District 5 (5 teams into regionals)

  1. Meeker
  2. Soroco
  3. Hotchkiss
  4. Vail Christian
  5. Rangely

We could have are #1 seed after tonight when Meeker and Soroco face off for the second time this year.  Meeker and Soroco are the two front runners and the game tonight 2/7 will decide the #1 seed for the District tournament.  Meeker still has to face Hotchkiss which could still force a three way tie but I do think tonight will give us are #1 seed.  Hotchkiss is on a two game losing streak losing to Soroco and North Park.  Hotchkiss won’t have much of a break with games against Meeker and Plateau Valley this weekend.  Hotchkiss can nearly lock up the #3 seed with a win over Plateau Valley.  Hotchkiss could force a three way tie if they can upset Meeker as well.  Figuring out the rest of the District is not easy.  Vail Christian currently sits in 4th.  Vail Christian pulled a 1-point victory over Hayden to help their cause for a Top 5 finish.  Vail Christian plays Paonia and North Park this weekend and the Paonia game has huge implications.  If Vail Christian can beat Paonia they can nearly lock up a top 5 seed.  Hayden Plateau Valley and Rangely are still in the Running for a Top 5 seed but games this weekend should help sort a few things out.  My picks for Regionals are: #1 Meeker, #2 Soroco, #3 Hotchkiss, #4 Vail Christian, #5 Rangely

District 6

  1. Swink
  2. Rye
  3. Holly
  4. Rocky Ford

District 6 is a big 10 team district and 6 of the 10 teams are battling for 4 spots.  The current front runner is Swink.  Swink is 9-0 in league play and 12-1 overall.  Swink has wins over Holly and Rye their two biggest challengers.  Swink has some tough non-league games remaining against Sargent and Limon.  My pick for second place is Rye.  Rye has been the biggest surprise team this year going 16-1 overall and 11-1 in league.  Rye beat Holly head to head to give them the leg up for District seeding.  Rye still has tough games against Simla and Rocky Ford.  Rye is your #2 seed for the District tournament but the Simla game this weekend is a good non-league test.  My pick for third is Holly.  Holly picked up important league wins over Crowley County (twice) and Hoehne.  If Holly beats Rocky Ford they lock up the #3 seed for the District Tournament.  My pick for 4th is a tough one and is between Crowley County, Fowler, Rocky Ford, and Hoehne.  Rocky Ford is in position to lock up the #4 seed for the District tournament.  Rocky Ford owns the head to head over Fowler and Crowley County.  My Picks for Regionals are: #1 Swink, #2 Rye, #3 Holly, #4 Rocky Ford.

District 7

  1. Heritage Christian
  2. Highland
  3. Dawson School
  4. Lyons

District 7 has a clear front runner with Heritage Christian taking over the top spot.  Heritage Christian beat Highland 52-41 to move them into the #1 spot.  Heritage Christian was also able to beat Dawson School by 3 this week to help nearly lock up the #1 seed for the District tournament.  Heritage Christian should be able to run the table the rest of the way with their toughest game remaining being Clear Creek and Front Range Christian.  Highland holds onto the #2 spot.  Highland bounced back from their loss beating Twin Peak Charter 67-21 and Clear Creek 78-43.  Highland has a big game against Dawson School this week and if then win control the #2 seed.  My pick for third is Dawson School.  Dawson School played well against Heritage Christian falling by just 3 points.  The close loss was enough for me to have them jump Lyons this week.  Dawson School beat Lyons 39-18 and now Dawson School controls their own destiny and if they can upset Highland can move into the #2 seed for the District tournament.  Lyons drops into my #4 spot.  Lyons has played a tough schedule in 2019 playing three tough opponents back to back to back.  Lyons can still finish in the top 4 in the district but winning 1 of their final2 games could be key.  My pick for Regionals are: #1 Heritage Christian, #2 Highland, #3 Dawson School, #4 Lyons.

District 8

  1. Simla
  2. Peyton
  3. Calhan
  4. Colorado Springs School

Well a shake up in District 8 has happened with Peyton upsetting Simla.  Peyton has locked up the #1 seed for the District tournament granted they avoid Miami-Yoder upsetting them next week.  Peyton also must play Dolores Huerta this weekend, but a loss just puts Simla and Peyton in a tie which Peyton owns the head to head win.  Simla has two league games remaining against Miami-Yoder and Colorado Springs School. CSS will be the big test for Simla.  Simla also has big non-league games against Rye and Kit Carson.  Simla is a lock for the #2 seed with a win in 1 of their final two league games.  Calhan is still in control of their fate for the #3 seed.  Calhan faces Dolores Huerta on 2/15 and will be for the #3 seed.  The #4 seed is still a bit in the air but CSS owns the head to head over Dolores Huerta and gives them the advantage for the #4 seed.  My picks for regionals are: #1 Simla, #2 Peyton, #3 Calhan, #4 Colorado Springs School.  I am going Simla over Peyton in the District tournament.  Beating a team again on a neutral court is not easy.
