Class 2A Semifinals and State Championship Predictions

#1 Peyton vs #12 Wiggins @10am

Peyton reaches the final 4 for the second straight year.  Last year Peyton lost in the semifinals to Paonia who won the state championship.  Peyton reached the Semifinals beating Sargent 3-0 in the first round and then beating Holly 10-0 in the regional championship.  Peyton hitting attack is led by Jaeden Meyers who is hitting .524 and Rupert Shaw who is hitting .478.  Peyton pitching attack is led by Rupert Shaw (1.22 ERA) and Rodney Gregg (0.65 ERA).

Wiggins reached the Regional/State tournament for the first time since 2010.  Looking as far as I can I believe this is first time Wiggins has reached the final 4 since 2002 when they won the State Championship.  Wiggins is 1 of 2 double digit seeds to reach the final 4.  Wiggins reached the final 4 upsetting #5 Front Range Christian 4-2 and then upsetting #4 Yuma 6-5.  Wiggins had great pitching performances from Bryce Ford and Dillon and Devon Harshman.  Wiggins hitting attack is led by Bryce Ford (.551 BA) and Dillon Harshman (.397 BA).  Wiggins pitching staff is led by Bryce Ford (1.73 ERA) and Devon (3.71 ERA) and Dillon Harshman (3.59 ERA).

Wiggins has a ton of momentum coming into this game picking up back to back upsets.  Peyton also got some momentum after barely escaping an upset minded Sargent team, they were able to beat a solid Holly team 10-0.  This could be one of the best pitching matchups in the semifinals if Bryce Ford goes against Rodney Gregg.  I am going with Peyton in this game, but Wiggins will keep it close.

#3 Rye vs #15 Fowler @10am

Rye is in their first season of playing 2A baseball and had a great year.  Last year Rye lost in the Regional Finals to eventual state Champion University.  The experience gained from that appearance powered them this season.  Rye faced Limon in game #1 and was able to escape with the 4-3 victory in 9 innings.  Rye then bounced back nicely beating Calhan 10-0 to advance to the Final 4.  Rye hitting attack is led by Bryce Benz (.575 BA) and Damon Elarton (.481 BA).  Rye pitching staff is led by Damon Elarton (1.34 ERA) and Bryce Benz (0.37 ERA).

Fowler is the other double-digit seed to reach the final 4.  Fowler hitting attack and timely pitching was able to help them advance to the final 4.  Fowler started their regional run with a 12-2 upset win over #2 Hotchkiss.  Fowler then upset #7 Dawson School 5-1 to move into the semifinals.  If Fowler continues to pitch well then this team will be tough to beat.  Fowler hitting attack is led by Hunter Mason (.412 BA) and Gabriel Proctor (.397 BA).  Fowler pitching staff is led by Jonathan Mobbley (1.88 ERA) and Zane Denton (4.16 ERA).

Fowler comes in with a ton of momentum.  Fowler downfall has been their pitching but if Mobbley and Denton continue to pitch like they did in Regional then Fowler will be a tough team to beat.  Rye bounced back well after nearly getting upset by Limon.  Rye has two very good pitchers and if Rye can continue to hit like they can watch out for Rye.  Rye swept Fowler during the regular season 18-2 & 13-3.  I don’t think the scores will be as bad this time but I am going with Rye over Fowler.

State Championship Prediction

#1 Peyton vs #3 Rye

This should be a great game.  Peyton and Rye faced off earlier in the year with Rye beating Peyton 7-4.  This was just a one game so we will see if both teams win how they handle each a second game.  I am going with Rye in this game over Peyton.  I think Rye is able squeak out a close win over Peyton.
