Top Returning Defense’s Class 2A

I am using PPG given up last year and seeing what teams are returning.  I am going to pick the Top 12 defenses and then give a few who could still be impactful defenses.

High School Stats
La Junta HS La Junta gave up a crazy 85-point last year which was top in Class 2A.  They were the only school to give up less than 100 points for the entire season.  La Junta will be hurt a bit by graduation on the defensive side, but they are returning quite a bit.  La Junta will return 7 of their top 11 tacklers, including Kyle Keck and Mitch Peabody.  La Junta also returns their #1 and #3 sack leaders.
Faith Christian Their defense gave up 129-points last year which was 6th in Class 2A.  Faith Christian always is a team to watch when it comes to defense and they are returning plenty of talent again this year.  Faith Christian will return leading tackler Michael Osgood plus 8 of their top 11 tacklers.  Faith Christian must find some pass rushers as they lose their lone pass rusher with 3+ sacks.  Faith Christian also return their top two defensive backs.
Englewood HS Their defense gave up 139 points last year which was good for 9th in Class 2A.  Englewood is returning a ton of talent and could be their best shot for a deep run in the playoffs.  Englewood returns their leading tackler Yakez Daughtry plus 9 of their 11 top tacklers.  Englewood also returns their top two pass rushers.  This team must get over the hump and beat quality opponents.
Delta HS Their defense gave up 206 points last year which was good for 22nd in Class 2A.  At times Delta defense was solid last year but in some of there losses the defense lacked.  Delta gave up 34 to Rifle and 45 to Platte Valley.  If Delta defense can move into the top 10, they could be a serious contender and could make a deep run.  Delta loses their top 2 tacklers but return 8 of their 11 tacklers.
Platte Valley HS Their defense gave up 149 points last year which was good for 11th in Class 2A.  Platte Valley could hurt early on with the loss of key skill players, but their defense should be in top form.  Platte Valley returns leading tackler Josh Yancey plus 8 of their 11 top tacklers.  Platte Valley will lean heavily on this defense but with the leadership returning this group should be very good.
Rifle HS Their defense gave up 131 points last year which was good for 7th in Class 2A.  Rifle will lose some talent on the defensive side mainly the leadership part losing 4 of their top 5 tacklers.  Rifle though does return some depth.  Rifle must find leadership on defense but look to Kenny Tlaxcala and Levi Warfel.  Rifle does return 6 of their top 11 tacklers and plenty of depth.
Bennett HS Their defense gave up 151 points last year which was good for 12th in Class 2A.  Bennett was very young last year with a ton of sophomores in the top 11 tacklers.  Mac Copeland will lead the defense and he will have another year under his belt plus some depth.  Bennett returns 6 of their 11 top tacklers and have plenty of depth.  Look for Bennett to improve this year.
Resurrection Christian Their defense gave up 103 points last year which was the 2nd in Class 2A.  Resurrection Christian was hit hard by graduation, but this team always seems to have a top defense.  Resurrection Christian losses their leading tackler but Tanner Applebee and Sawyer Shepherd return to lead the defense.  Resurrection Christian will have to fill plenty of holes with only 4 of their 11 top tacklers returning.
Lamar HS Their defense gave up 232 points last year which was good for 26th in Class 2A.  Lamar is hoping for a playoff berth plus a deep run, but their defense must improve this year.  Lamar has the leadership with Gabe Estrada and Jesus Gonzalez returning.  Lamar also return 6 of their 11 top tacklers.   If Lamar can improve to a top 15 defense, they may have a shot at a playoff berth.
Machebeuf HS Their defense gave up 149 points last year which was good for 10th in Class 2A.  Machebeuf return plenty of talent on the defensive side of the ball.  Machebeuf return leading tackler Own Thornton plus 7 of their 11 top tacklers.  Machebeuf could be a team to watch for if they continue to improve on defense.
Eaton HS Their defense gave up 163 points last year which was good for 14th in Class 2A.  Eaton has hit somewhat hard by graduation losing 4 of their top 5 tacklers but will have some depth coming back.  Look for Derek Renfroe to lead the defense.  Eaton will return 5 of their 11 tacklers.
Salida HS Their defense gave up 111 points last year which was good for 3rd in Class 2A.  Salida was hit hard by graduation losing their top 5 tacklers.  Salida though has a solid group of juniors returning and will hope for one last big run I the playoffs.  Jesse Camp and Elijah Roberts must lead this defense.
Defenses to Watch for Sterling, Alamosa, Bayfield, D’Evelyn, Kent Denver, Berthoud, Classical Academy, Pagosa Springs, The Academy, University
