MileHigh Prep Report Volleyball Preseason Rankings Class 1A

Finally moving into the Volleyball side of the fall season.  I will go Class by Class and give my Top 16 and a few teams to watch for.

Class 1A

Rank Team Notes
#1 Kit Carson

Defending State Champions

Kit Carson is your defending State Champion.  Kit Carson is losing a good senior class with their top 4 hitters all graduating.  Kit Carson stays at #1 despite that due to the tradition this school has.  Reyna Isenbart, Cally Rady, and Allison Gekeler will all have to step up and take over for Kit Carson.
#2 Fleming

Made the State Tournament, 4-2

Fleming had a great run last year getting into the final 4 and winning 4 games in the state tournament.  Fleming will have a few holes to fill this year but will return 4 of their top 6 hitters.  Fleming returns leading hitter Whitney Chintala and #3 hitter Kendyl Kirkwood.  Fleming also returns their setter Kendyl Kirkwood but look for another player to possibly step into this role.
#3 Merino

Made the State Tournament, went 2-2

Merino also had a good season last year reaching the state tournament and missing the final 4 by just 1 game.  Merino should not take a step back this year and should be even better this year.  Merino returns their top two hitters Brooke Mertens and Taysa Conger.  Merino also returns 5 of their top 6 hitters as well.  Merino also returns dig leader Faith Trenkle and setter Madison Sutter.
#4 Briggsdale

Did not qualify for Regionals

Briggsdale missed the Regional tournament going 1-4 in the district tournament.  The 4 teams that beat Briggsdale in the District tournament all qualified for the state tournament so this team will know what it takes to get to the top.  Briggsdale returns 4 of their top 6 hitters including Kimberlyn Krise and Talia Donoho.  Briggsdale also returns their setter Talia Donoho.  I expect Briggsdale to have an improved season.
#5 Sangre De Cristo

Made the State Tournament, went 1-2

Sangre De Cristo had a great run last year reaching the state tournament and going 1-2.  Sangre De Cristo is returning a ton of talent from last year’s team but must replace their leading hitter.  Sangre De Cristo returns the rest of the team including Kylee Christensen and Avery Palmgren.  Sangre De Cristo also returns dig leader Jordyn Cantu and setter Renae Sinclair.  Sangre De Cristo should make another deep run this season.
#6 La Veta

Made the State Tournament, Runner Ups

La Veta had a good season last year coming up just short in the state championship against Kit Carson.  La Veta will have a big hole to fill with Kaylee Corsentino graduating.  The rest of the roster does return and look for Desi Ortivez and Nya Sciacca to step up and lead the offense.  Mary Goins also returns at setter and look for La Veta to be competitive this year.
#7 Genoa-Hugo

Made it to Regionals, went 1-1

Genoa-Hugo just missed the state tournament falling in the regional finals to Haxtun.  Genoa-Hugo is hoping to take the next step and get to the state tournament.  Genoa-Hugo is returning a ton of talent from a year ago with 5 of their top 6 hitters returning.  Rylely Smartt and Glorya Carr should lead the offensive attack this year.  Setter Tessa Smith also returns to help anchor this offensive attack.
#8 Weldon Valley

Made the State Tournament, went 3-2

Weldon Valley had a solid tournament run last year losing their first game but then winning 3 straight to reach the final 4 before falling to Kit Carson.  Weldon Valley is losing some talent from last year’s team including their leading hitter and #3 hitter.  Weldon Valley though does return 4 of their 6 top hitters and will look to Linda Amaglio and Kaytlyn Keating to lead this offense.  Weldon Valley loses their top setter from a year ago but solid reps from Christa Sandoval will keep this offense on time.
#9 Dove Creek

Made the State Tournament, went 0-2

Dove Creek reached the state tournament a year ago and went 0-2 but the experience should help the team this year.  Dove Creek does lose some talent from last year’s team with their #2 and #3 hitters graduating.  Dove Creek does return top hitter Cassie Gatlin and #4 hitter Grace Hatfield.  Dove Creek also returns their setter Taylor Hickman and 4 of their top 6 hitters.  Dove Creek should return to the state tournament again.
#10 Springfield

Made the State Tournament, went 0-2

Springfield reach the state tournament and went 0-2.  Springfield gained some very valuable experience and are hoping to make a deeper run this year.  Springfield will have to replace their top hitter but return 5 of their 6 top hitters.  Springfield will need Julia Mondragon and Brinlyn Dukes to step up on the offensive side this year.  Springfield also returns setter Lexi Crane and dig leader Kylie Parks.
#11 Flagler/Hi Plains

Did not qualify for Regionals

Flagler/Hi Plains missed out on Regionals last year losing to Idalia 3-2.  Flagler/Hi Plains was mostly sophomore last year and a year of experience should help this team this year.  Flagler/Hi Plains returns 5 of their top 6 hitters including their top 4 hitters.  Sydnie Santala and Skyler Hawks should both improve this year and help power this offense.  Dig leader Katelyn Klann and setter Kendyl Saffer both return and like I said most of these players were sophomore last year.
#12 Cotopaxi

Made Regionals, went 1-1

Cotopaxi made it to regionals last year but lost to La Veta in the regional finals to just miss out on the state tournament.  Cotopaxi will have a few holes to fill but returning 4 of their top 6 hitters will help.  Cotopaxi will return top hitter Koylynn Gulliford and Claire Carlson.  Dig leader Jamie Sanchez and setter Shealee Coleman also return and Cotopaxi will be a team to watch this year.
#13 Pikes Peak Christian

Made Regionals, went 0-2

Pikes Peak Christian had a solid year last year going 18-7 but missed out on the state tournament going 0-2 at Regionals.  Pikes Peak Christian should be a threat for the state tournament this year with 4 of their top 6 hitters returning.  Top hitters Kyler Sweat and Bailey Qualls both return to anchor this offensive attack.
#14 Haxtun

Made the State Tournament, went 2-2

Haxtun played well in their first year of 1A volleyball reaching the state tournament and going 2-2.  Haxtun will have some big holes to fill with Dawson Knode graduating.  Ciera Schelling and Brooklyn Davis will have to step up this year and lead Haxtun.  Other hitters will need to be found this year as well.  Haxtun will also need to find a new setter this year.
#15 Otis

Made the State Tournament, went 1-2

Otis had a great season last year going 23-2 and reaching the state tournament.  Otis though will have some key pieces to replace with just 2 of their top 6 hitters returning.  Becca Bleak and Annalise Glosson must step up for Otis this year.
#16 Stratton/Liberty

Did not qualify for Regionals

Stratton/Liberty had a decent season last year going 13-7 but missed out on Regionals.  Stratton/Liberty is returning 5 of their top 6 hitters including their top 4 hitters.  Stratton/Liberty must continue to get big production from Savannah Rothbauer, Kennedy Frank, and Andrea Hornung.  Those three all broke the 100-kill mark last year.  Setter Mattie Crouse also returns, and I think Stratton/Liberty has a shot at the state tournament this year.
Other Teams to Watch Walsh, Elbert, McClave, Belleview Christian, De Beque, Mile High Academy, Front Range Christian, Cheyenne Wells, Creede, South Baca, Wiley, Kim/Branson
