How to Qualify for the State Football Playoffs

With changes to Class 1A & 2A I have decided to show how to qualify and the seeding process for Class 2A thru 6-Man.  With the changes to 2A and 1A I will now be posting the rankings for the Coaches Poll, Maxpreps, and the RPI for just Class 2A & 1A.  For 8-Man and 6-Man I will just post the RPI rankings.

Class 2A & 1A

Qualifying Format

The seeding committee for 1A thru 5A will be the members of the football committee, minus any active coaches.  If necessary, replacements for the active coaches will come from the same classification in roughly the same geographic area of the state.  The committee will meet at the CHSAA office on the Sunday following the final week of the regular season.

Following the end of the regular season, the procedures listed below will be utilized to capture the playoff bracket and serve as the criteria used for seeding the bracket.

The Top 16 teams in the classification based on the final RPI rankings will qualify for the post-season bracket.  Each conference champion will automatically be placed on the playoff bracket.  Conference champions are determined by the conference Bylaws or policies.  If a conference champion is not ranked in the top 16 based on the final RPI, they will replace the lowest ranked team that is not a conference champion in the top 16.

Seeding Criteria (Once qualifies are determined)

Four sources of data will be collected used when seeding teams for the playoff bracket: RPI Ranking System; MaxPreps; Packard Rankings; Coaches Poll.  Each source of data collected at the end of the regular season will be equally weighted.

Coaches Poll: All Head coaches are required to vote 7 of 9 weeks in the online Coaches Poll during the regular season.

The sources of data collected will be utilized to place teams on the 16-team bracket. Once on the bracket, teams can be moved one sot at maximum based upon a head to head regular season game, if they are consecutive seeds on the bracket.

If the scenario exists where three of more consecutive seeded teams have all played one another, they will remain as originally placed on the bracket

A conference champion not ranked in the top 16 of the final RPI rankings will be placed in the bracket.

When possible, conference opponents will not be paired against one another in the first round and geography will be consideration in the first round.  These adjustments can be made for seeds #9-#16.

Seeding Procedure

Conference champions that are ranked in the Top 16 of the final RPI rankings are placed on the board for consideration.

The seeding committee will determine the #1 overall seed and place that team on the bracket.  The #2 team from the same conference as the #1 overall seed will then be place on the board for consideration.  The seeding committee will then determine the #2 overall seed and place that team on the bracket.  The #2 team from the same conference as the #2 overall seed will then be place on the board for consideration.  The process will be followed until all 16 teams are seeded.

8-Man

8-Man Qualifying Format

The seeding committee will be made up of 1 member from each conference.  No coaches are permitted to serve on the committee.  The Committee will meet at the CHSAA office on Sunday following the final week of the regular season.

Following the end of the regular season, the procedures listed below will be utilized to capture the playoff bracket and serve as the criteria used for seeding the bracket.

The top 16 teams in the classification based on the final RPI rankings will be placed into the post-season bracket.  If a conference champion is not ranked in the Top 16 based on RPI ranking, they will replace the lowest ranked team that is not a conference champion in the top 16.

Seeding Criteria (once qualifiers are determined)

The following criteria should be taken into consideration when seeding bracket, in no particular order: RPI, Common opponents, strength of schedule and head to head competition.

A conference champion in the Top 10 of the seeded playoff brackets will host a first game unless they are playing another league champion.  Once seeded, the seeds of the teams will not change, regardless of who hosts the game.

A conference champion not ranked in the top 10 of the seeded playoff bracket will be placed in the bracket but will not host a first round game.

A conference champion not ranked in the top 16 of the final RPI rankings will be placed in the bracket but will not be guaranteed a top 10 seed and will not be guaranteed to host a first-round game.

When possible, conference opponents will not be paired against one another in the first round.

Geography will be a consideration in the first round

6-man

6-man Qualifying Format

Seeding numbers 1-8 will be seeded according to the final RPI standings and will be home teams in Round 1.  Teams that are seeded numbered 9-16 will be seeded using RPI and geography.  When possible, conference opponents will not be paired against one another in the first round.

Conference champions not ranked in the top 16 of the final RPI will be placed in the bracket but conference champions are not guaranteed a top 8 seed.
