CLASS 1A VOLLEYBALL REPORT – WEEKEND
BY: KERRY SHERMAN
It’s a pretty light schedule for the top-12 teams in the current CHSAA rankings, as most have this
weekend off. However, there are still some very important matches on the slate.
FRIDAY
#8 PLATEAU V ALLEY (13-4) AT NORTH PARK (2-14)
Plateau Valley ran its winning streak to five with a sweep of 2A Hayden last Saturday, keeping the
Cowgirls just one win behind 2A #3 Vail Christian in the Western Slope standings. Vivian Arthur put
away 13 kills, while Ava Johnson and Presley Hawkins added seven apiece. Arthur also led the team with
five aces, and Johnson had a team-high nine digs. Morgann Miller picked up 24 assists, and Bailey Taylor
added 13. North Park also saw its streak extended last Saturday, but for the Lady Wildcats, it’s now a six-
match skid. They fell to Weldon Valley in four sets after taking the first. Magdalena Moya led the team
with nine kills, and Jenna Sessions tacked on five to go with 23 digs. Paige Solano served five aces, and
also recorded 15 assists. Aubrey Baugh tallied 15 digs. Plateau Valley has won 12 straight against North
Park, with the Lady Wildcats’ last victory in the series coming in 2014.
SATURDAY
#1 SIMLA (18-1) HOSTS TRI WITH #5 CHERAW (16-3). #30 FLEMING (6-13)
Simla rolls into this Tri on an 18-match winning streak, and the Lady Cubs still haven’t dropped a set
since losing to Vail Christian in their season opener. They gave up a total of 16 points in a sweep of
Hanover in Black Forest play on Tuesday, with the Lady Hornets failing to score more than seven points
in any set. Cheraw won both of its matches last week, taking a five-setter over #2 McClave, and sweeping
#18 Wiley. The Lady Wolverines have not played since last Friday. After opening the season 1-8, Fleming
has warmed up recently, as they Lady Wildcats have gone 5-5 in their last 10 matches. They had a four-
match winning streak broken last Friday in a five-set loss to #20 Briggsdale. Fleming trailed 2-0 before
rallying to force a fifth in that contest.
#9 HAXTUN (14-7) AT #12 STRATTON (13-6)
Haxtun’s four-set win against #24 Idalia on Tuesday was its third in a row. Idalia won the firs 26-24, but
the Fightin’ Lady Bulldogs won the last three without allowing more than 18 points in any of those sets.
Ashlyn Wolff (13), Leah Edwards (11), and Scarlett Crossland (10) all finished in double figure kills to
lead a balanced attack. Wolff added four aces and five blocks, while Edwards had a team-leading 14 digs.
Peyton Biesemeier tallied 10 digs. Haylie Carpenter and Crossland tacked on 15 and 13 assists,
respectively. Stratton bounced back from last Friday’s five-set loss at 2A #6 Sedgwick County to pull out a
five-set victory over 2A #21 Burlington in a key Union Pacific league match. The Lady Eagles built a 2-0
lead, but had to pull out a 15-6 fifth to save the victory. Rilynn Weickum (21) and Kinsleigh Brachtenbach
(20) formed a dangerous tandem on the attack, and Gracie Miltenberger added nine kills. Kennedy
Henschel led the defense with 25 digs, followed by Brachtenbach with 24, and Miltenberger with 20.
Miltenberger also had 28 assists, four more than Kaylynn Brandon with 24. Haxtun has won all five
meetings with Stratton, including three against the Stratton/Liberty co-op.
#11 CALICHE (12-8) AT #20 BRIGGSDALE (11-9)
Caliche suffered a 3-0 sweep loss to 2A #2 Merino on Tuesday, breaking a mini two-match winning
streak. Ellie Willis led the Lady Buffs with 11 kills, and Faye Lueck tacked on 10. Hayden Walker
recorded 25 digs, while Lueck and Breidenbach added 12 and 10, respectively. Lily Armstrong (18) and
Aniston Marostica (13) combined for 31 assists. Briggsdale has won three straight, thanks to a sweep of
Front Range Baptist on Tuesday. Bailey Loyd topped the Lady Falcons with nine kills in the win. Kendra
Burns served four aces, and Sawyer Malcom-Dunfee led with 17 digs. Sloan Benson added 10 digs and19 assists. Briggsdale will have a match with 2A #9 Holyoke earlier in the day. Briggsdale had won 12
straight against Caliche before the Lady Buffs got a sweep victory last year. The Lady Buffs had only won
two sets in the losing streak.
MONDAY
#10 PRAIRIE (15-5) VS BETHUNE (6-14)
Prairie begins the final week of the regular season with this non-league match that had been scheduled for
Saturday, but was moved back a couple of days to accommodate Bethune, who has its junior high league
tournament that day. The Lady Mustangs snapped their small two-match losing slide with a four-set
victory over Potter-Dix (NE) on Tuesday. Bethune hosted Manzanola in a clash of Lady Bobcats on
Monday, and it was Manzy getting the win in four sets. This will be the first match between Prairie and
Bethune in the MaxPreps era
