Class 3A Top 5 Matchups for Week 4 (Thursday thru Saturday)

Trying something new for Volleyball for a couple weeks until a few more games are played then will switch to the Top 10 Breakdown.  I am going to go to each Class and pick the 5 games that I am the most interested in and give a quick breakdown of each team.

Lamar (4-2) vs James Irwin (5-1)

Lamar is off to a 4-2 start and have 2 quality losses to Eaton and University.  Lamar is on a three-game winning streak picking up wins over Ellicott, Manitou Springs, and a upset win over St. Mary’s.  Lamar is hoping to continue their hot start in league and look to move to 4-0.  Lamar is led by kill leaders Maddy Williams (85) and Sydney Dunning (81).

James Irwin is off to a very solid 5-1 start with their lone loss coming to 2A Rocky Ford.  James Irwin has won 5 straight games and have not dropped a set.  James Irwin opened league play against Trinidad and won 3-0.  James Irwin is led by Rihanna Tulensa (39 Kills) and Kya Willis (38 kills).

Alamosa (5-1) vs Montezuma-Cortez (1-0)

Alamosa is off to a 5-1 start with their lone loss coming to #1 Denver Christian (2A).  Alamosa will play 1 game before this matchup against Sangre De Cristo who is ranked in 1A.  Alamosa will play their first league game against Montezuma-Cortez.  Alamosa has not updated stats for all 6 games, but it currently looks like Taylor Motz and Alyssa Crowther are leading the team in kills.

Montezuma-Cortez opened their 2019 campaign with a 3-0 win over Dolores.  Cortez will have a game against Aztec before their league game against Alamosa.  Montezuma-Cortez will have 7 games in September and 9 games in October.  We don’t know a ton about Montezuma-Cortez but after one game they were led by Myka Glover and Avery Wright in kills.

Eaton (2-0) vs Brighton (4A) (2-2) (Tournament)

Eaton has played just two games in this young season.  Eaton picked up solid wins over Lamar (3-2) and Buena Vista (3-0).  Eaton faces Brighton in a tournament this week and should provide some games to see how good this Eaton team is.  Eaton thru two games has been led by Sydney Leffler (27 kills) and Abbey Hays (23 kills)

Brighton is 2-2 on the season and winning their last match against Boulder 3-1.  Brighton will play 3 teams before facing Eaton.  This should be a good early matchup for both teams.

Sterling (1-0) vs Erie (4A) (1-2) (Silvercreek Tournament)

Sterling is 1-0 on the season with their lone victory over Fort Morgan (3-0).  Sterling will play Alliance NE before jumping into the Silver Creek Tournament.  Sterling will play Erie and Mountain View in the tournament, but it looks like 4 games are scheduled for the tournament.  Sterling has been led by Sydney Henry and Kaylee Johnson in the 1 game they played.  Sterling is still very young and seeing their growth will be key to their season.

Platte Valley (2-0) vs Weld Central (1-2)

Platte Valley is off to a 2-0 start.  Platte Valley picked up wins over Highland (3-0) and Middle Park (3-1).  Platte Valley will play their third match against Weld Central before jumping into the Lewis-Palmer Tournament where they will play Pueblo West (4A) and Montrose (4A).  Thru two games Platte Valley has been led by Brooke Bunting and Kaira Alvarez.

Weld Central is 1-2 on the year with losses to Fort Morgan and Valley.  Weld Central will hope to pull a huge upset against Platte Valley.  Weld Central is a 4A team.
