Class 1A Football Week 9 League Breakdown

With just two weeks left in the regular season things are really starting to heat up.  Remember only the top 16 in the RPI get into the playoffs and really it’s the top 15 due to the Foothills League Champion taking a spot.

Foothills League

The Foothills league will get only 1 team into the playoffs and that is the league champion.  1 team sits atop the Foothills league standings.  Platte Canyon is 3-0 in league but cannot win the league title till they face Manual next or if Manual loses this week and Platte Canyon wins.  Platte Canyon faces Lake County and we will see if this game happens.  Lake County has forfeited their past 3 games.  Manual has a shot still at the playoffs and league title still but must beat Clear Creek this week.  If Manual wins, they face Platte Canyon next week for a shot at the league title.  Like I mentioned only the league champion has a shot at the playoffs in the Foothills League.

Playoff Contenders: Platte Canyon, Sheridan, Manual

RPI: Platte Canyon (22), Sheridan (28), Clear Creek (30), Jefferson (32), Manual (35), Lake County (40)

North Central League

The North Central League has been a great race this year.  Limon and Holyoke sit atop the league standings and won’t face each other till next week.  That will be for a league title but Limon and Holyoke are also locks for the playoffs.  Wray sits in second at 2-1 and is a lock for the playoffs as well. Their league title hopes are still alive as well but must upset Limon this week to have any shot.  Limon vs Wray should be a great matchup.  Wray played tough against Holyoke last week but were outscored 30-0 in the fourth quarter.  Wray will look to fix some mistakes from last week and play better in the second half.  Limon last week beat Burlington 38-21.  Limon scored 22 points in the second quarter and held on to the lead the rest of the game.  Limon had a huge game from Kory Tacha and will need another big performance from him this week.  Limon would love to play Holyoke outright for the league title next week.  Holyoke this week faces Wiggins.  Wiggins has shown they can play tough against teams but have yet to get over the hump.  Holyoke with a win sets the table for a huge game against Limon.  The final game in the North Central League pits Burlington vs Yuma.  This is a huge game for RPI implications.  Burlington is in a must win situation.  Burlington must win out to have any shot at the playoffs.  Yuma on the other hand must win just 1 of their final 2 games.  Yuma ends the year against Wray next week.

RPI Numbers

Holyoke, Limon, and Wray are all locks for the playoffs.  Yuma to have a shot at getting in must win at least 1 of their final 2 games.  If Yuma wins 1 of their final 2 their RPI will be around .5135 to .5145 which puts them around the #15 spot and remember only the top 15 will get in.  Burlington must win both games to have any shot at the playoffs.  If Burlington wins both their RPI will be around .5360 thru .5370 which would put them around the #14 or #15 RPI.  Wiggins must win both games to have any shot at the playoffs.

Playoff Contenders: Holyoke, Limon, Wray, Burlington, Yuma,

RPI: Holyoke (1), Limon (3), Wray (5), Yuma (15), Burlington (17), Wiggins (23)

Northern League

The Northern League Champion cannot be crowned this week but we move one step closer this week.  Strasburg sits alone atop the League standings and they host Estes Park this week.  If Strasburg beats Estes Park, they set up the league championship next week against Flatirons Academy.  Estes Park is looking for the signature win and sit in a must win position.  Estes Park cannot get into the playoffs without a win over Strasburg this week and a win over Highland next week.  Strasburg is in the hunt for the #1 overall seed and a win keeps that alive.  Strasburg with a win sets up a huge matchup against Flatirons Academy next week.  Highland and Flatirons Academy sit in second place.  Highland owns the tie breaker over Flatirons Academy.  Highland is a lock for the playoffs and are battling for a top 10 seed.  Flatirons Academy is also a lock for the playoffs.  Flatirons Academy is hoping to increase their seed and need a big upset of Strasburg to do so next week.  Pinnacle and Lyons are eliminated from the playoff hunt.

RPI Numbers

Flatirons Academy is a lock for the playoffs.  If they go 1-1 to end the year, they will end with an RPI around .5415 which puts them in.  Estes Park must win both games to get into the playoffs and they are the only other teams somewhat on the bubble in the Northern League.

Playoff Contenders: Strasburg, Highland Flatirons Academy, Estes Park

RPI: Strasburg (3), Highland (7), Flatirons Academy (11), Estes Park (24), Pinnacle (27), Lyons (37)

Santa Fe league

The Santa Fe League has one team sitting atop the league standings and that is Rocky Ford.  Rocky Ford pulled off the upset of Peyton 19 to 12 and now control their own fate.  Rocky Ford this week faces Trinidad and a win gives them the league title.  Rocky Ford has won 4 straight games and winning out will really improve their shot at a higher seed in the playoffs.  Only two other teams in the Santa Fe league have any shot at the playoffs they are Peyton and Crowley County.  Peyton and Crowley County face each other this week and if you want to talk about a huge matchup this is it.  Remember only the Top 15 in the RPI will get in.  Crowley County must win out and get some help to get into the playoffs.  This week look for RB Adam Schulz to try and continue his great performances the past two weeks.  Crowley County must be able to stop the run this week.  Peyton is also in must win territory.  If Peyton can win both they will see their RPI rise enough to move possibly into the top 15.  Peyton though cannot drop a game and get into the playoffs.  Peyton will look for their rushing attack led by Colton Murray and Brandon Hussey to lead them to the win.  This will be a good matchup between these two teams.  John Mall, Ellicott, and Trinidad are eliminated from the playoff hunt.

RPI Numbers

Rocky Ford winning out should keep improving their RPI a bit.  It will all come down to the three other polls to see where they will be seeded.  Peyton as mentioned above must win out.  If they do their RPI should be around .5395 and .5405 which is in the 14 to 15 area.  Crowley County must win out and get some help to get in. If Crowley County win out their RPI could improve to .4850 to .4900 which is still outside the top 19 but if some other things go their way they could have their RPI improve.

Playoff Contenders: Rocky Ford, Peyton, Crowley County

RPI: Rocky Ford (13), Peyton (16), Crowley County (20), John Mall (33), Ellicott (34), Trinidad (36)

Southern Peaks League

Centauri still cannot officially lock up the league title, but I will go ahead and crown them the league champions after Monte Vista beat Ignacio last week.  Centauri this week has a massive non-league game against Florence.  This game will affect RPI and seeding for the state tournament.  This should be one of the best games in the entire state.  Monte Vista is the only other team in the Southern Peaks league with a shot at the playoffs.  Center losing to St. Mary’s last week put an end to any hopes they had at the playoffs.  Monte Vista faces Center this week and Buena Vista next week and must win both games to have any shot.  Monte Vista will need some help as well to get into the playoffs.  Simple for Monte Vista is win and hope things fall your way.  Center will be a great test for Monte Vista this week and I think will come down to which team really shows up to play.  Center will need to have a big performance from QB Habran Delacruz and RB Abraham Euchari.  Monte Vista last week had an injury to Kaidon Wenta which threw them off a bit offensively.  If he is healthy, he will be a big factor in the game.  If not look for QB Colton Mellott and RB Levi Trujillo to step up again and lead Monte Vista.

Playoff Contenders: Centauri, Monte Vista

RPI: Centauri (7), Monte Vista (26), Center (31), Ignacio (38), Dolores (40)

Tri-Peaks League

Two teams sit atop the League standings and they are C.S Christian and Florence.  Florence and C.S Christian don’t meet until next week to decide the Tri-Peaks League title.  Florence as mentioned above has a massive non-league game against Centauri.  Florence will be challenged with the speed and spread offense of Centauri.  Florence will turn to RB Owen Busetti and RB Jacob Kennedy.  These two must have success running the football.  Defensively Florence will be tested by a talented Centauri offense.  Centauri offensively likes to spread the field and use their speed.  QB Eric Maez does a good job running the offense and has two good RB’s in Taj Cornum and Mason Claunch.  This will be a great matchup between two good teams fighting for higher playoffs seeds.  The two league games in the Tri-Peaks league are Rye at Buena Vista and C.S Christian at St. Mary’s.  C.S Christian should grab the victory and set up the league title next week.  C.S Christian cannot over look St. Mary’s or could be surprised.  The game between Rye and Buena Vista has huge implications.  Rye is a near lock for the playoffs but must win at least 1 of their final 2 games.  Rye faces St. Mary’s next week.  Rye though can lock up a spot with a win over Buena Vista this week.  Rye has struggled against teams with winning records and this will be a solid test.  Buena Vista is in the hunt for a final spot in the playoffs as well.  They have a shot at the playoffs winning just 1 of their final 2 games but if they want a better shot, they must win both of their final 2 games.  Buena Vista will look to have a break out game from QB Kik Molitor and have a great defensive game.

RPI Numbers

C.S Christian and Florence are lock for the playoffs.  St. Mary’s is eliminated from the playoffs.  Rye as mentioned needs to win just 1 of their final 2 games to get in.  If Rye wins 1 then their RPI could be around .5280 thru .5295 and puts them around the 14 to 15 RPI.  Buena Vista must win at least 1 of their final two games to have any shot.  If they win at least 1 game, they will be around a .5180 to .5200.  This would put them around the #14 to #15 RPI.  Things will be very interesting heading in to the final 2 weeks.

Playoff Contenders: Florence, C.S Christian, Buena Vista, Rye

RPI: Florence (6), C.S Christian (7), Rye (12), Buena Vista (14), St. Mary’s (29)

Western Slope League

The Western Slope League has two teams atop the league standings they are Meeker and Hotchkiss.  These two teams won’t meet until next week and that will be for the league title.  Meeker hosts Olathe this week and Hotchkiss travels to Cedaredge this week.  Olathe sits in second place right now.  Olathe looking towards the playoffs has to win out to have a shot to get in or win at least 1 of their final 2 games and get some help to get in.  Olathe can still partially win a league title as well with the upset of Meeker.  Meeker is hoping to improve their seed for the tournament and winning out should do that.  Meeker will have to find success stopping the run this week.  Hotchkiss is nearly a lock for the playoffs as well but cannot afford to loss to Cedaredge this week and Meeker the final week or could be in trouble.  One other game to quickly talk about is Paonia at Grand Valley.  This is an elimination game.  Winner keeps their playoff hopes alive and loser will be eliminated.

RPI Numbers

Meeker is a lock for the playoffs.  Hotchkiss has to beat Cedaredge to lock themselves into the playoffs.  Olathe is in a tough spot if they go 1-1 to end the year their RPI will be around .4915 thru .4950 which would not be high enough to get in without some help.  Olathe though winning out gets into the playoffs.  Paonia has to win out to have any shot.  If Paonia wins out their RPI could be around .5015 to .5030 which would be around #16 and would need some help to move up higher.  Grand Valley must win out and get some help to move into the top 15 and same for Cedaredge.

Playoff Contenders: Meeker, Hotchkiss, Paonia, Olathe, Cedaredge

RPI: Meeker (4), Hotchkiss (8), Paonia (18), Olathe (19), Grand Valley (21), Cedaredge (25)
