Class 1A Football Quarterfinals Breakdown

Good Luck to all teams in the Quarterfinals.  We have some very good match ups

#1 Strasburg vs #8 Highland

Strasburg moved into the Quarterfinals with a 50 to 0 victory over Manual.  Strasburg had the running clock going by halftime and were able to rest starters heading into the quarterfinals.  Strasburg defensively shut down Manual main offensive attack holding Manual to just 2 yards rushing.  Strasburg did give up 129 yards passing but forced 1 turnover and 1 sack.  Offensively Strasburg had a solid day racking up 219 yards of total offense.  QB Collin Russell had a good day going 6 for 6 for 88 yards and 2 TDs.  The rushing attack had 131 yards rushing and were led by Jayden Zacher and Trystan Graf.  This week Strasburg will be facing another run first team but has proven they can throw.  Offensively Strasburg will be tested and look for Collin Russel and Trystan Graf to have big games.

Highland moved into the quarterfinals with a hard fought win over Hotchkiss 14-7.  Highland scored in the second quarter and had the lead till the 4th when Hotchkiss was able to get a score.  Neither team scored after that and we moved into OT.  Highland was able to get a score in overtime to secure the win.  Defensively Highland did give up some yards on the ground giving up 225 yards.  Highland defense though bent but did not break.  Offensively Highland also found success running the football rushing for 239 yards and 2 TDs but the passing game really struggled throwing 2 INTs.  The rushing attack was led by Holden Morgan who rushed for 190 yards and 2 TDs.  This weekend Highland will face a balanced offensive attack.  Offensively look for Holden Morgan to have another big game.  These two teams have faced each other before with Strasburg winning the first meeting 35-14.  Expect another close game this time around as well.

#4 Meeker vs #5 Centauri

Meeker moved into the quarterfinals with a hard-fought win over Buena Vista.  Meeker had QB Ryan Phelan get hurt early in the game and early on Meeker struggled.  Meeker was down 14 to 6 going into halftime.  Meeker though was able to right the ship at halftime and came out and scored 12 points in the 3rd quarter.  Meeker continued rolling scoring 16 more points in the 4th quarter and walking away with the 34-20 victory.  Meeker defensively had a good day stopping the run holding Buena Vista to just 94 yards rushing.  Buena Vista did find some success throwing the ball but Meeker forced 1 INT in the game.  Offensively Meeker turned to QB Braydon Garcia to step up.  Garcia threw for 137 yards and 2 TDs.  The rushing attack also had a big game for Meeker racking up 252 yards and were led by Kelton Turner who had 192 yards rushing and 2 TDs.  I have not heard any news on if Ryan Phelan is playing but the offense for Meeker will be tested regardless by a very fast defense in Centauri.  Defensively Meeker must come to play and stop the run.

Centauri moved into the quarterfinals in one of the best games in the first round.  Centauri struggled early on in this game to get anything going and trailed at halftime 14 to 0 to Flatirons Academy.  The struggle continued most of the way thru the 3rd quarter with Flatirons Academy scoring 1 more time to make the score 21 to 0.  Centauri started finding some success at the end of the 3rd quarter and were able to get into the endzone early in the 4th quarter making the score 21 to 7.  Centauri then forced an INT and scored again making the score 21 to 14 with around 9 minutes left.  Centauri defensively continued to step up forcing a three and out.  Centauri was able to score once again tying the score up at 21.  Centauri defensively continued to have a great game and got the ball back once again.  Centauri was able to get another score taking the lead 28-21 and winning 28-21.  Centauri scored 28 straight points in the 4th quarter and had a huge comeback.  Defensively Centauri really stepped up.  Centauri did give up some yards giving up 260 yards of total offense.  Centauri though did force 4 turnovers in the game.  Offensively Centauri struggled early on but in the 4th quarter had a big day from the rushing attack and key passes.  QB Eric Maez threw for 78 yards and 2 TDs and had a couple big throws in the 4th quarter.  The rushing attack racked up 219 yards and were led by Taj Cornum (100 yards) and Mason Claunch (80 yards).  Centauri now must refocus and be ready for a good Meeker team.

Wray had the big upset of the first round.  Wray was able to grab the 13 to 10 victory over Florence.  Wray defensively gave up some yards giving up 212 yards rushing and 100 yards passing but made some key defensive plays.  Wray forced 3 turnovers in the game, and all were key plays.  Wray bent but did not break on defense.  Offensively Wray was without Tyler Collins and looked for someone to step up.  Wray found that player with Emmanuel Huerta having a huge game rushing for 157 yards and 2 TDs.  Junior Arambula also had a big game rushing for 79 yards.  Wray must now be ready for Limon this week.  Offensively Wray must be able to run the ball with success.  Defensively Wray has to be ready for the balanced offensive attack of Limon.  These two teams have played each other before with Limon winning 40 to 9.  Look for Wray to make this a much closer game this time around.
