MileHigh Prep Report Class 2A Boys Basketball Preseason Poll

Note: I am just going to quickly give the rankings and a quick breakdown of what they are returning.  Next week I will go league by league and breakdown each league!

Class 2A

Rank Team Notes
#1 Yuma HS

Defending State Champions

Yuma is your defending State Champions.  Coach Dave Sheffield has Yuma playing well and have won back to back titles.  Yuma will have some key pieces to replace losing their #1 scorer and #1 rebounder.  Yuma though returns #2 scorer Clay Robinson, #3 Scorer Chase McCreath, and #4 Scorer Jonathan Rascon.  Yuma won’t have as much height as last year but have a lot of talented Guards and will look to defend their title.
#2 Highland HS

Runner Ups

Highland is reloaded once again.  Highland loses their #2 and #6 scorers from a year ago but return talented Guard Tate Bessire along with Jase Bessire.  A new top rebounder must also be found but I look to Holden Morgan to step up at that spot.  Highland has plenty of talent to push for a state title.
#3 Fowler HS

Made State Tournament

(Went 3-1, Took 3rd Place)

Fowler continues to improve year in and year out and last year had a big run and finished 3rd.  Fowler returns their top 2 scorers Val Leone and Jonathan Mobbley.  Fowler will have to replace some talented senior guards but look for Gabriel Proctor and Luke Bitter to really step up at guard this year.
#4 Limon HS

Made State Tournament

(Went 3-1, Took 5th Place)

Limon played well last year despite some key injuries.  #1 scorer Camden Smithburg and #2 Scorer Kory Tacha return this year but will need some scoring depth around them to develop.  Limon loses some key seniors from last year but with a talented pair of players returning Limon should still be dangerous.
#5 Mancos HS

Made State Tournament

(Went 0-2)

Mancos had success last year and will hope to build of that success.  Mancos returns 4 of their top 6 scorers but replacing the two seniors is never easy.  Mancos will look to Caden Showalter, Show Showalter, and Christian Cova to really step up this year.  Mancos will need some scoring depth to develop but have a lot of talent returning and valuable playoff experience.
#6 Vail Christian HS

(Lost in Regional Finals to Fowler)

Vail Christian is losing 3 of their top 6 scorers but have plenty of talent coming back.  Vail Christian returns #1 scorer Alec Moritz, #4 scorer Jamison Lee, and #6 scorer Hayden Sticksel.  Vail Christian will have to replace their leading rebounder from a year ago but with the scoring coming back Vail Christian will be dangerous.
#7 Sanford HS

(Lost in Regional Finals to Denver Christian)

Sanford will have some reloading to do this year losing 4 of their top 6 scorers.  Coach Rhett Larsen is one of the best and seems to always get players to develop.  #2 scorer Clay Canty and #3 scorer Thomas Faucette are back and must lead a young team and with the success of football it could translate into a tough physical Sanford team.
#8 Wray HS

(Lost in Regional Finals to Limon)

Wray had a very successful year last year and just missed out on state forcing OT again Limon at Regionals.  Wray will look to reload and make another push.  Wray will have to replace 3 seniors from last year team.  Wray does return #1 scorer Justin Pecar, #2 scorer Samuel Uyemura, and #3 scorer Junior Arambula.  If Wray builds of the success of last year watch out.
#9 Holly HS

Made State Tournament

(Went 1-2, took 4th Place)

Holly will have some reloading to do this year.  Holly losses 6 of their top 7 scorers but look for some key pieces to really step up this year.  Holly will lean heavily on #1 scorer Brigden Parker to carry the load early on.  Holly continues to be competitive year in and year out and look for the players to develop quickly for Holly.
#10 Dolores Huerta

(Lost in 1st Round of Regionals to Vail Christian)

Dolores Huerta rounds out the top 10 and they had a surprise season last year and will look to build on that this year.  Dolores Huerta will have some holes to fill losing 2 of their top 6 scorers and their leading rebound and PG.  Dolores Huerta will return #1 scorer Charles Winston and #2 Scorer Xavier Gomes both averaging over 13 PPG a season ago.
#11 Denver Christian

Made State Tournament

(Went 0-2)

Denver Christian will have some big holes to fill losing their top two scorers.  Denver Christian will return their next 3 scorers and a lot of depth.  A few leaders must really set up for Denver Christian.
#12 Byers HS

Made State Tournament

(Went 1-2)

Byers will be looking to reload this year and hope some younger kids really step up.  Byers is losing 4 of their top 6 scorers but look for #3 scorer Zaine Mikita to really step up and lead Byers this season.  As mentioned, some younger kids will be forced to step up this season.
#13 Plateau Valley

Lost in 1st Round of Regionals to Denver Christian

Plateau Valley started building success last season and will look to continue.  Plateau Valley returns #1 scorer Stevenson Reynolds, #3 scorer Austyn Vig, and #4 scorer Dylan Christensen.  Plateau Valley will need someone to step up at PG this season but look for Plateau Valley to be tough this season.
#14 Meeker HS

Lost in 1st Round of Regionals to Highland

Meeker showed growth last season and had two players emerge as top scorers.  Meeker will return #1 scorer Ryan Phelan (If he is healthy) and #2 scorer Cole Rogers.  Meeker will look for some scoring depth to develop and if it does look for Meeker to move up the rankings.
#15 Ignacio HS

Did not Qualify for Regionals

Ignacio had a bit of a down year last missing regional for the first time in a long while.  Ignacio look like they have rebuilt and are ready to make some noise yet again.  Ignacio loses just 1 senior from last years team and return everyone else.  Ocean Hunter must lead Ignacio this year but look for Coach Chris Valdez to get his team going in the right direction.
#16 Crowley County HS

Did not Qualify for Regionals

Crowley County is coming off a tough year not reaching regionals but look for that to motivate Crowley County this year.  Crowley County loses just 1 senior from a year ago and he was the #3 scorer.  Crowley County will return #1 scorer Ti’Quan Williams, #2 scorer Quamon Williams, and top rebounder Kevin Suarez.  Crowley County should show improvement this year.
#17 Dayspring Christian HS

Lost in 1st Round of Regionals to Sargent

Dayspring Christian reached Regionals last year and will hope to get a step farther this year.  Dayspring Christian does lose some scoring depth losing 3 of their top 6 scorers.  Dayspring Christian will return #1 scorer Christian Still and #4 scorer Hunter Wittnam.  Dayspring Christian will need some scoring depth but should improve this year.
#18 Center HS

Lost in 1st round of Regionals to Mancos

Center Returns all but 1 player from their team a year ago and he was the #3 scorer.  Center will return #1 scorer Devin Porres and he has shown he can carry a team.  Center will need some players around him to really step up and look for Habran DeLaCruz, Diego Velez, and Abraham Echauri to help with scoring.
#19 Sedgwick County

Lost in Regional Finals to Highland

Sedgwick County had some rebuilding to do last year and found success.  This year Sedgwick County will hope to reload.  Sedgwick County will return #2 scorer Tate Dille, #4 scorer Terrance Heath, and #5 scorer Gavin Thode.  Sedgwick County should have success this season with a lot of younger players seeing minute last year.
#20 Holyoke HS Holyoke was very young last year and had a lot of inexperience in rout to a 3-17 record.  Holyoke will be getting 6 of 7 scorers back and a year of experience under their belts.  Holyoke will look to Mason King and Blake Mosenteen to really step up and lead Holyoke.
Teams to Watch for: Clear Creek, John Mall, West Grand, Peyton, Simla, Rye, Swink, Simla, Burlington, Paonia, Del Norte, Sargent
