Southern Colorado Wrestling Update by Carlos Valencia

Sorry everyone that i missed the last two weekends, but I’m back. We had had some good tournaments the past two weekends. Florence had an awesome tournament and good matches. It was like a 3A mini state tournament. A lot of 3A teams attended as well as a couple of 2A teams. Also, another tournament that went on was the Top of the Rockies held by Centaurus High School. Mainly 4A/5A schools but a couple teams from 2A/3A attended including Rocky Ford, John Mall and Alamosa. All three teams had good turnouts, bringing a couple of placers and Tournament Champions. This past weekend The Screaming Eagle Invitational had a strong showing, a lot of top teams from 3A and 2A attended. Custer County had a good turnout for a lot of the teams with low numbers. They ran a round robin format, which allowed the wrestlers to get matches which gives the match time.

This week Center hosts the Valley Classic. This tournament will bring in many top ranked teams and wrestlers from 2A rankings. It should be a very exciting day and very good matches throughout the day. The weekend starts off with the Kourtney Lake Duals held on Friday. Should be a good afternoon and night of wrestling. Teams include Paonia, Hotchkiss, Centuari, Norwood, Rocky Ford, Beuna Vista, Fowler, and Hayden. So a lot of exciting matches and match ups with schools. If you’re in the San Luis Valley stop by Center High School and check it out.

We have two weeks before Regionals and three weeks before State. The grind is coming in hard right now. Kids are getting to their certified weights; coaches are moving around their rosters to make the best lineup. Many decisions being made. Good luck to the coaches in their hard decisions and to the kids making their certified weights.

All the hard work and stress is going to be all worth it when you walk into the Pepsi Center that first day of weigh-ins. Keep your eye on the prize.
