Girls Basketball District Breakdown & Predictions Class 1A
With just 4 weekends left until District tournament we are in the final grind. For Class 1A you must finish Top 3 (Top 2) to qualify for the Regional Tournament so putting yourself in the best position in the District tournament is key. We look at each District Race and give are prediction on the District. We will be using these District Predictions on my Playoff Projections.
District 1 (Only qualifies 2 teams)
- Dove Creek
- De Beque
District 1 gets only two teams into regionals. Two teams have emerged as the front runners for these spots. Dove Creek and De Beque. You will have to watch out for North Park and Nucla as well. Dove Creek has won 8 straight games and should push the win streak to 11 games heading into the District Tournament. De Beque has played well in the Class 2A Western Slope League and are 5-3 in league. De Beque closes the season with 3 tough 2A teams before jumping into District Tournament play. De Beque beat North Park by 24 points. I do think North Park could be a factor in the District Tournament but will have to play their best game to pull an upset.
- Kit Carson
District 2 gets 3 teams into regionals. Kit Carson is the favorite to win District 2 and have one district game remaining against McClave on 2/21. A win over McClave or a loss by Eads should wrap the #1 seed up for Kit Carson. Kit Carson will be tested in their final 4 games against Idalia, Genoa-Hugo, McClave, and Simla. Eads sits in second place and have the head to head win over McClave. Eads has two remaining games against Cheraw and Cheyenne Wells. Eads must win their final two league games to lock up the #2 seed. McClave sits in third and a win over Granada on 2/14 should lock up the #3 spot. McClave has a big chance to pick up a quality win when they face Kit Carson at the end of the year.
- South Baca
District 3 qualifies 3 teams into regionals. District 3 has 4 tough teams fighting for 3 spots. Two teams are the favorites to win District 3 Springfield and South Baca. Wiley and Kim/Branson look to be fighting for the #3 spot. South Baca right now is still my pick to win District 3 due to the State Tournament experience. South Baca and Springfield don’t play each other until 2/20. South Baca has at least wrapped up a top 2 seed and have 3 tough games remaining. Springfield has two games remaining and a win over Wiley this weekend wraps up a top 2 seed. Wiley will provide a tough test for Springfield. Wiley has the #3 seed all locked up. Wiley locked it up with the 51-43 win over Kim/Branson. Wiley faces Springfield and McClave to close out the season. Kim/Branson will be in the play in game against Walsh and will hope to challenge for a top 3 spot.
District 4 qualifies 3 teams into regionals. District 4 seems to have 3 front runners for the 3 spots. Briggsdale, Fleming, and Merino are all picked as the 3 teams to qualify but these 3 teams will get their best from challengers such as Prairie, Longmont Christian, and Weldon Valley. Briggsdale holds onto my #1 spot despite losing to Fleming. Briggsdale still has to face Merino and a win over Merino should lock up a top 2 seed. I am not sure how they will break the tie between Briggsdale and Fleming. Fleming is my pick for second. Fleming is playing really good basketball and shows with wins over Merino and Genoa-Hugo. Fleming and Briggsdale are two teams I can’t wait to see match up again. Merino still has a shot at the #2 seed but must upset Briggsdale on 2/20. If not, Merino is looking like the #3 seed.
- Lone Star
District 5 qualifies 3 teams to regionals. Lone Star has emerged as the favorite to win District 5. Lone Star still must face Bethune and Arickaree/Woodlin in District but are already a near lock for the #1 seed in the District tournament. Haxtun is still my pick to finish second in the league. Haxtun is playing a 2A schedule and has been competitive. They will be a team to watch once they play against 1A teams. Stratton/Liberty moves into the #3 spot. Stratton/Liberty recently picked up a big win over Bethune and have a quality win over Eads. Stratton/Liberty still must face Idalia before they can look to lock up a top 3 seed in the District tournament.
District 6 (Only 2 teams make it to Regionals)
- Sangre De Cristo
District 6 gets just two teams into regionals. Sangre De Cristo is the favorite currently but cannot lock up the #1 seed until the beat Sierra Grande and Moffat. Sangre De Cristo with wins in those games lock up the #1 seed. Sangre De Cristo, I think still has yet to peak and I think if they start to do so will be scary come Tournament time. Cotopaxi has all but locked up the #2 seed. Cotopaxi will have to avoid being upset in their final two games against Antonito and Manzanola. Cotopaxi should be the #2 seed. Moffat can still make things very interesting if they can upset Sangre De Cristo. Moffat, Sierra Grande, Antonito, La Veta, and Centennial could all be competitive in the District Tournament.
District 7 gets three teams into regionals. Genoa-Hugo and Elbert have emerged as the main contenders for the #1 and #2 seeds. Genoa-Hugo still is my pick to win District 7. Genoa-Hugo and Elbert do not face each other during the regular season. Genoa-Hugo still has big games against Kit Carson and Eads on their schedule. Elbert is my pick for second in District 7. Elbert will also face Kiowa and Shining Mountain both will be solid challenges for Elbert. Kiowa moves into the #3 spot this week. Kiowa is played solid basketball and have a big win over Pikes Peak Christian 42-24. Kiowa still has ECA on their schedule for league play and must pick up the win to hold onto the #3 seed.
- Flatirons Academy
- Shining Mountain
- Mile High Academy
District 8 qualifies 3 team to regionals. District 8 looks to have 5 teams battling for 3 spots. Flatirons Academy has emerged as the favorite to win District 8. Flatirons Academy picked up the win over Shining Mountain 49-45 and now are in the driver seat for the #1 seed. Flatirons Academy ends the year with Dawson School and Elbert both big RPI games. Shining Mountain slides into the #2 spot. Shining Mountain has played tough back to back games and have two losses. Shining Mountain will be looking to bounce back against Front Range Baptist and also have a big non-league game against Elbert this weekend. Shining Mountain ends the year with a tough game against Mile High Academy and will be for the #2 seed. Mile High Academy moves into the #3 spot. Mile High Academy beat Belleview Christian 54-44 and now can improve to the #2 spot when they face Shining Mountain on 2/18.
