Boys Basketball Class 2A District Breakdown & Predictions

Final week of the regular season.  Some league races are complete, but some are still on the up for grabs.  In Class 2A you must finish in the Top 4 of your districts to make it to Regionals (5 for District 5 or 3 for District 3).  Class 2A also gives the league champion the right to host a regional.  I will continue to update this weekly or bi-weekly.

District 1

  1. Sanford
  2. Center
  3. Crested Butte
  4. Sargent

Crested Butte has not locked up the #1 seed yet.  If Crested Butte beats Sargent then they lock up the #1 seed.   Crested Butte plays Ouray and Sargent to end the year and the Sargent game is a league game.  Sargent played them well last time they faced each other.  Sanford can lock up the #2 seed with a win over Sargent on 2/21.  Sanford can still fall to the #4 seed if they lose to both Sargent and Del Norte this weekend.  Sargent sits tied with Sanford but a loss to Sanford will have them fall to the #4 spot.  Sargent can still lock up the #1 seed with a win over Crested Butte and Sargent this weekend.  Center owns the head to head over Sargent.  I am going with Sanford to win the District 1 tournament with Center finishing second, Crested Butte third and Sargent 4th.

District 2

  1. Yuma
  2. Wray
  3. Sedgwick County
  4. Holyoke

Yuma will need to win 1 of their final 2 games to lock up the #1 seed.  Yuma plays Holyoke and Haxtun to end the season.  Yuma has the head to head over Sedgwick County 45-33.  Sedgwick County has locked up at least a #2 seed and if Yuma loses both games this weekend could see themselves jump to #1.  Sedgwick County ends the year with a game against Caliche.  Wray has locked up the #3 seed.  Wray end the year against Akron.  Holyoke has the #4 seed all locked up.  Holyoke will more than likely face Wiggins in the first round of the district tournament.  I am going with Yuma to win the District 2 tournament with Wray, Sedgwick County, and Holyoke finishing top 4.

District 3 (Only 3 teams make it to Regionals)

  1. Mancos
  2. Ignacio
  3. Telluride

Things were shaken up when Mancos beat Ignacio this week.  I am not sure what the head to head is to break the tie.  If point differential or RPI is used, then Mancos goes in as the #1 seed.  Mancos must still face Telluride who sits in third place in the District and must win to hold onto the #1 seed.  Ignacio is done with league play and finish the year with a non-league game against Sierra Grande.  Telluride has the #3 seed all locked up as well.  I am going with Mancos to win the District 3 tournament.  I think Ignacio vs Mancos in the district championship will be a great game.  I have Telluride finishing third.

District 4

  1. Limon
  2. Denver Christian
  3. Burlington
  4. Byers

I am very interested to see how they seed the District 4 tournament.  I know RPI is used but I am interested to see if head to head is considered.  I will give the seeds using RPI only.  The seeds are: Limon, Denver Christian, Burlington, Byers, Clear Creek, Lotus School, Front Range Christian, Golden View, Denver Academy, Platte Canyon.  Diving more into it Burlington, Byers, and Clear Creek are sitting at 22, 23, and 24.  Burlington and Clear Creek still have 1 game left and I am guessing the order may not change.  My semifinal games for District 4 would be Limon vs Byers and Denver Christian vs Burlington.  I am going with Limon to win the District 4 tournament with Denver Christian in second, Burlington in third, and Byers in fourth.

District 5 (5 teams into regionals)

  1. Meeker
  2. Vail Christian
  3. Plateau Valley
  4. Paonia
  5. Vail Mountain

District 5 still has a few things to sort out but one thing we know for sure is Vail Christian will go into the District 5 tournament as the #1 seed.  Vail Christian end the year against Hayden.  Honestly the District 5 tournament will be one of the best tournaments to watch.  Meeker has locked up the #2 seed as well.  Meeker ends the year against Hayden and win or loss have the #2 seed.  Meeker has turned their season around and are fully healthy.  Plateau Valley has locked up the #3 seed.  Plateau Valley does play Caprock Academy to end the year but have already locked up the #3 seed.  Vail Mountain and Paonia are tied right now for the #4 and #5 seeds.  Vail Mountain is done with games, but they do not have the head to head over Paonia.  Paonia finishes the year with a game against Hotchkiss and is a big game.  Paonia with a win gets the #4 seed but a loss could see them tumble.  Rangely, West Grand and Soroco all sit tied with 6 loses.  West Grand has the most winnable game against North Park and Rangely and Soroco have very tough games to end the year.  I am picking Meeker to win the District 5 tournament with Vail Christian in second.  Plateau Valley, Paonia, and West Grand are my pick for third, 4th, and 5th.

District 6

  1. Fowler
  2. Holly
  3. Crowley County
  4. Rocky Ford

The District 6 tournament bracket is released.  1 pigtail game must be played between Rye and Las Animas.  The winner faces Holly on 2/24.  The first-round matchup are: Holly vs Pigtail Winner, Hoehne vs Rocky Ford, Crowley County vs Swallows Charter, and Fowler vs Swink.  So, win your first-round game and get into regionals.  My picks to win their first-round game are Holly, Rocky Ford, Crowley County, and Fowler.  Those 4 teams would qualify for the regional tournament.  I am then picking Fowler to win the District 6 tournament with Holly finishing second, Crowley County third, and Rocky Ford 4th.

District 7

  1. Highland
  2. Dawson School
  3. Dayspring Christian
  4. Heritage Christian

District 7 took a interesting turn when Lyons upset Dayspring Christian and seeding has not changed for District 7.  Highland has locked up the #1 seed and picked up an impressive 80-55 win over Denver Christian.  Highland ends the year against Lyons in a league match up.  Dawson School and Heritage Christian are tied with 3 losses and both should pick up wins in their final game.  Dawson School would be the #2 seed due to the head to head win.  Heritage Christian would be the #3 seed.  Dayspring Christian should still end up as the #4 seed with an easier final game than Lyons.  I am going with Highland to win the District 7 tournament with Dawson School finishing second, Dayspring Christian third, and Heritage Christian 4th.

District 8

  1. Dolores Huerta
  2. Peyton
  3. Thomas MacLaren
  4. Colorado Springs School

Dolores Huerta has locked up the #1 seed.  Dolores Huerta beat Peyton 49-46 to lock up the #1 seed.  Peyton still has two league games remaining and must win 1 of the two to lock up the #2 seed.  Peyton should beat Miami-Yoder to lock up the #2 seed and Peyton faces Calhan to end the season.  Thomas MacLaren picked up the important OT win over CSS to lock up the #3 seed.  Thomas MacLaren end the year against Fountain Valley.  I am going with Dolores Huerta to win the District 8 tournament with Peyton finishing second, Thomas MacLaren third, and Colorado Springs School 4th.
