Region 1 Pod 1-Hosted at Gunnison HS 3/7 @ 1:00pm
Sangre De Cristo vs De Beque
Winner: Sangre De Cristo
Sangre De Cristo was your winner out of District 6. Sangre De Cristo played well in the District Tournament as the favorite to win. In the District Championship Sangre De Cristo beat Cotopaxi 39-14 and have some needed momentum to take into the Regional tournament. De Beque finished second in District 1 falling to Dove Creek 49-39. De Beque will be looking to bounce back against a top 10 opponent. Both teams are looking for back to back berths to the State tournament and should be a good game at Regionals.
Region 1 Pod 2-Hosted at Gunnison HS 3/7 @ 10:00am
Dove Creek vs Cotopaxi
Winner: Dove Creek
Dove Creek won the District 1 tournament beating De Beque 49-39. Dove Creek has dominated since moving into league play and are looking for a state tournament berth. Dove Creek has won 13 straight games. Cotopaxi finished second in the District 6 tournament falling to Sangre De Cristo 39-14. Cotopaxi will be looking to bounce back from the loss and hoping for a state tournament berth. Honestly this was a tough pick. I am going with Dove Creek to win this game, but I can easily see it going to Cotopaxi if they can jump out to a lead.
Region 2 Pod 1-Hosted at Englewood HS
#6 Merino vs #7 Haxtun-3/6 @ 3:30pm
Winner of #6 vs #7 plays #1 Briggsdale-3/7 @4:30pm
Merino punched their ticket to regionals winning the 3rd place game 53-41 over Longmont Christian. Merino bounced back nicely after falling to Briggsdale 48-39 and will now be place in the same pod as Briggsdale once again. Merino though will have their hands full with Haxtun in the first round. Haxtun finished second in the District 5 tournament. Haxtun lost to Lone Star 27-25 and nearly pulled the upset. Haxtun will be looking for back to back upsets to get to the state tournament once again. I am picking Merino over Haxtun to advance to face Briggsdale. Briggsdale enters regionals as the District 4 champion winning the rubber match against Fleming 61-54. Briggsdale could possibly face Merino for the third time this season in the Regional Finals and would be a tough game. Briggsdale is one of the favorites to win the Class 1A title. I am picking Briggsdale over Merino in the regionals finals to advance to the State Tourament.
Region 2 Pod 2-Hosted at Englewood HS
#5 Lone Star vs #8 Front Range Baptist-3/6 @11:00am
Winner of #5 vs #8 plays #2 Fleming-3/7 @11:00am
Lone Star is your District 5 champion beating Haxtun 27-25. Lone Star punched their ticket to regionals beating Stratton/Liberty 49-42 in the semifinals. Lone Star has just 1 loss on their resume and will hope to keep it that way to advance to the state tournament. Front Range Baptist finished 3rd in the District 8 tournament pulling 2 upsets to get to regionals. Front Range Baptist upset Belleview Christian in the Quarterfinals and then upset Mile High Academy in the third place game to punch their ticket to regionals. Front Range Baptist will now need back to back upsets to move to the State Tournament. I am picking Lone Star over Front Range Baptist to face Fleming in the regional finals. Fleming finished second in the District 4 tournament falling to Briggsdale 61-54. Fleming will be looking to bounce back and get back to the state tournament. Fleming is one of the favorites to win the Class 1A State Title. I am picking Fleming over Lone Star to advance to the State Tournament.
Region 2 Pod 3-Hosted at Englewood HS
#4 Flatirons Academy vs #9 Stratton/Liberty-3/6 @ 6:30 pm
Winner of #4 vs #9 plays #3 Shining Mountain-3/7 @ 12:45pm
Winner: Flatirons Academy
Flatirons Academy won the District 8 tournament 53-46 over Shining Mountain. Flatirons Academy did not get the bye and will have to avoid being upset by Stratton/Liberty to face Shining Mountain for the third time this season. Flatirons Academy will need continued solid play from their young guards. Stratton/Liberty reached the regional tournament finishing 3rd in the District 5 tournament. Stratton/Liberty beat Idalia 40-31 to finish 3rd. Stratton/Liberty has played tough basketball to end the season and will hope to shock everyone with a pair of upsets. I am picking Flatirons Academy over Stratton/Liberty to reach the regional Finals against Shining Mountain. Shining Mountain finished 2nd in the District 8 tournament falling to Flatirons Academy 53-46. Shining Mountain will hope the 3rd time is the charm if they face Flatirons Academy in the Regional Finals. It is extremely tough to beat a team 3 times in one season and I am going with Flatirons Academy over Shining Mountain for the third time this season.
Region 3 Pod 1-Hosted at La Junta HS
#2 Eads vs #3 Elbert-3/6 @5:00pm
Winner of #2 vs #3 plays #1 South Baca-3/7 @5:00pm
Winner: South Baca
Eads pulled one of the biggest upsets in the District tournament upsetting Kit Carson 32-29 to punch their ticket to the regional tournament. Eads finished second in the District 2 tournament falling to McClave 36-33. Eads will have hope to pull 2 more wins to get to the state tournament this year. Elbert finished 3rd in the District 7 tournament beating Edison 36-31. Elbert was upset by Kiowa in the Semifinals but bounce back nicely in the third place game. Elbert will be tested once again in the first round and will hope to pull an upset themselves this time around. I am picking Eads over Elbert to advance to face South Baca. South Baca won the District 3 tournament over Springfield 49-39. South Baca avenged their loss to Springfield during the regular season. South Baca will now have the target on their back as they hope to get to the state tournament. I am picking South Baca over Eads to reach the state tournament.
Region 3 Pod 2-Hosted by La Junta HS
#2 Springfield vs #3 Kit Carson-3/6 @2:00pm
Winner of #2 vs #3 plays #1 Genao-Hugo-3/7 @2:00pm
Wanted to say one thing first that this is easily the toughest Pod of any Pod in Class 1A and whoever comes out of this Pod will be battle tested for the State Tournament. Springfield finished second in the District 3 tournament falling to South Baca 49-39. Springfield will be looking to bounce back and will have their hands full with Kit Carson in the regional first round. Springfield has beat Kit Carson twice this season. Kit Carson reached the state tournament by finishing in third place in the District 2 tournament. Kit Carson was upset by Eads in the semifinals but bounce back beating Cheraw 59-31. Kit Carson will be looking to avenge their two losses to Springfield and will hope the third time is the charm. I am picking Springfield over Kit Carson to reach the Regional Finals against Genoa-Hugo. Genoa-Hugo won the District 7 tournament with some ease beating Kiowa 47-21 in the championship. Genoa-Hugo will hope to use the momentum to reach the state tournament. Genoa-Hugo drew a tough regional pod and will have their hands full with either winner. I am picking Springfield over Genoa-Hugo to reach the state tournament.
Region 3 Pod 3-Hosted by La Junta HS
#2 Kiowa vs #3 Kim/Branson-3/6 @11:00am
Winner of #2 vs #3 plays #1 McClave-3/7 @11:00am
Kiowa reached regionals beating Elbert 37-29 in the semifinals of the District 7 tournament. Kiowa finished second falling to Genoa-Hugo in the District 7 championship 47-21. Kiowa will now looking to advance into the Regional finals but will have a tough game with a hot Kim/Branson team. Kim/Branson advanced to the regional tournament finishing third in the District 3 tournament. Kim/Branson pulled the upset in the 3rd place game beating Wiley 45-33. Kim/Branson is playing good basketball and played tough against Springfield and will hope to use the momentum. I am picking Kim/Branson over Kiowa to advance to the regional finals against McClave. McClave won the District 2 tournament beating Eads 36-33. McClave is the surprise District winner and will now have the target on their back. McClave has faced Kim/Branson once this season and won but I think Kim/Branson is playing much improved basketball. I am picking McClave to beat Kim/Branson, but this Pod is definitely up for grabs.
