Top Returning Defense’s Class 2A

Picking the best returning defenses is not an easy task but of course it’s always fun to take a look.  I am using PPG given up last year and seeing what teams are returning.  I am still debating on doing best returning offensive line or not.  I am still debating on when to release my Class 2A Preseason Rankings.

High School Stats
Resurrection Christian Their defense gave up 127 points last year which was good for 3rd in Class 2A.  Their defense once again carried them to the semifinals and looks to be just as formidable as last year.  Resurrection Christian returns defensive leader in Tanner Applebee along with 7 of their top 11 tacklers.
Basalt HS Their defense gave up 141 points last year which was good for 7th in Class 2A.  Basalt was a big surprise last year and with what is coming back will be a force in their league.  Basalt returns 7 of their top 11 tacklers including leading tackler Sam Sherry.  Basalt will be looking to replace both pass rushers, but this defense will be solid once again.
Eaton HS Their defense gave up 118 points last year which was best in Class 2A.  Eaton will be losing some senior leadership with their top tackler graduating.  Eaton though will return 7 of their top 11 tacklers including their top pass rusher.  Eaton seems to always be near the top in defense in Class 2A and I don’t expect anything different.
Pagosa Springs HS Their defense gave up 232 points last year which was good for 28th in Class 2A.  Pagosa Springs will look to improve a unit that must be a top 15 unit to push for a playoff spot.  Pagosa Springs lose their top tackler but return 7 of their top 11 tacklers and have a ton of depth coming back.  Look for Grant Aucoin and Mitch Lewis to step up and become leaders on defense this season.
Delta HS Their defense gave up 143 points last year which was good for 8th in Class 2A.  Delta is returning a lot of talent from an improved defense a year ago.  Delta will return defensive leader James Goff but will be looking to fill some holes with 6 of their 11 top tacklers returning.  Delta will also look to replace their top two pass rushers but have some upcoming seniors to possibly fill the holes.
Lamar HS Their defense gave up 223 points last year which was good for 26th in Class 2A.  Lamar will look to improve their defense this season again and hope for another return to the playoffs.  Lamar will lose their leading tackler but return 7 of their 11 top tacklers.  Look for Devyn Kincade, Blake Buxton, and Jesus Gonzalez to really step up as leaders on defense.
Englewood HS Their defense gave up 192 points last year which was good for 22nd in Class 2A.  Englewood will hope to keep improving their defense and will have plenty of talent coming back.  Englewood does lose their top 2 tacklers but return 8 of their 11 top tacklers and lots of depth.  Englewood will hope to improve to a top 15 defense and carry a young offensive team this season.
Faith Christian HS Their defense gave up 133 points last year which was 5th in Class 2A.  Faith Christian was hit hard by graduation losing their top 4 tacklers.  Faith Christian will return 5 of their top 11 tacklers but will be looking to reload this season.  Faith Christian is one of those teams who always seems to have a very tough defense and expect the same.
Classical Academy Their defense gave up 166 points last year which was good for 16th in Class 2A.  Classical Academy did a good job last season reloading their defense and should be tough again.  Classical Academy returns 7 of their top 11 tacklers but will be looking for a defensive leader with their top tackler graduating.
Alamosa HS Their defense gave up 151 points last year which was good for 11th in Class 2A.  Alamosa had some huge improvements last year on defense and will look to build off last year.  Alamosa will return their top two tacklers in Cash Mueller and Donovan Ramirez but will be looking to replace 6 of the 11 top tacklers.  Alamosa is returning a young team and look for this unit to stay in the top 15 again this season.
Sterling HS Their defense gave up 153 points last year which was good for 12th in Class 2A.  Sterling is the defending State Champions and will be looking to reload this season.  Sterling is losing a lot of talent from an improved defense but look for this unit to quickly step up.  Peyton Rose and Keaton Knaub will need to lead this young defensive unit.
Kent Denver Their defense gave up 163 points last year which was good for 16th in Class 2A.  Kent Denver had some growing pains last season and now look for this unit to really step up.  Kent Denver returns their top 2 tacklers and 6 of their 11 top tacklers.  Kent Denver will look to return to a top 10 defense and have a solid core to build around.
Machebeuf HS Their defense gave up 143 points last year which was good for 9th in Class 2A.  Machebeuf will look to build off last season strong end.  Machebeuf returns their top 2 tacklers from a year ago but will need to replace some key pieces Machebeuf returns 5 of their 11 top tacklers but this unit will be key for success this year.
Platte Valley HS Their defense gave up 145 points last year in Class 2A.  Platte Valley always is a team to watch for in terms of defense and this season will be no different.  Platte Valley will lose some key leadership, but this team just reloads.  Platte Valley will turn to younger players to become leaders this season.
Rifle HS Their defense gave up 119 points last year which was good for 2nd in Class 2A.  Rifle is losing a lot of talent from last years team but will return their defensive leader in Josh Straw.  Rifle will be looking for a lot of younger Juniors to step up this coming season but that has not slowed down a always tough Rifle defense.
D’Evelyn HS Their defense gave up 182 points last year which was good for 19th in Class 2A.  D’Evelyn will be under a new head coach this season and he will have plenty of talent returning.  D’Evelyn returns 7 of their 11 top tacklers including leading tackler Jacob Rose.  D’Evelyn will hop to improve to a top 10 defense and make a run for the playoffs.
Defensive Unit Watch List: La Junta HS, Bayfield HS, Moffat County HS, Elizabeth HS, Kent Denver HS, Woodland Park, The Academy, Brush, University
