Class 1A Football Week 2 League Predictions and Playoff Predictions
We move into the Class 1A Ranks and with that I am going to make a change to how I do my articles. Instead of doing a breakdown of each league, I am going to start doing more of a prediction style article. If you want a true breakdown article, I would go check out Coloradopreps.com they do a breakdown of each Class and are well written by Kevin Shaffer and Kerry Sherman. What I plan to do instead is predict each League game and give a reason why. I will then give a look at what that means towards league standings. Starting next week, I will start giving my Playoff Predictions in a separate article like I have in normal years. Also, remember this is just my opinion on the games and the results of the games rest upon the kids.
The Foothills League started league play last week with 3 games and the lone team playing a non-league game was Bennett. Currently atop the standing is Strasburg, Prospect Ridge and Banning Lewis. The League games this week are Prospect Ridge at Strasburg, Banning Lewis at Pinnacle and Bennett at Jefferson.
Banning Lewis over Pinnacle
Banning Lewis picked up their first win as a varsity program last week over Jefferson who has had some success. Banning Lewis was able to keep their offense balanced but was led by QB Kaden Levi. Pinnacle really struggled to stop the run but also had some success passing the ball. I am going Banning Lewis over Pinnacle. I think Banning Lewis rushing attack will be enough to power them to the win. Pinnacle is very young, and I think next year we can see them being more competitive.
Bennett over Jefferson
Bennett and Jefferson both started out with losses last week and both I thought were favorites in their games. Bennett was upset by Wiggins and Jefferson was beat by Banning Lewis. Bennett in their game struggled to get their big play rushing attack going and had just 138 yards rushing. Jefferson in their game could not keep pace offensively with Banning Lewis. I am going Bennett over Jefferson. Bennett, I think bounces back after the upset loss. Bennett has plenty of offensive weapons and look for Mac Copeland to have a big game.
Strasburg over Prospect Ridge Academy
Both Strasburg and Prospect Ridge were victorious in their week 1 games. Prospect Ridge came out and dominated on the ground rushing for 349 yards as a team led by Dylan Meredith. Strasburg also came out big on the ground rushing for 280 yards but also throwing for 105 yards. QB Collin Russel and RB Trystan Graf both had solid days for Strasburg. I am picking Strasburg over Prospect Ridge. Strasburg is proven to be tough on stopping the run and proved it in week 1 against Platte Canyon. Strasburg, I think offensively will be extremely tough especially with the balanced attack they can hit you with. Prospect Ridge I think will be a tough test, but I think Strasburg may be just a bit too much.
League Standing Outcome
IF my predictions are correct that would move Banning Lewis and Strasburg to 2-0 in league, Bennett to 1-0, and Prospect Ridge to 1-1 in league. Pinnacle, Jefferson, and Platte Canyon would sit without a win. The first 4 teams mentioned would still be in the playoff hunt.
Playoff Contenders: Strasburg, Bennett, Banning Lewis, Prospect Ridge
The North Central League got league play kicked off last week with 3 games and Wiggins the lone team playing a non-league game. Limon, Wray, and Holyoke sit atop the league standing after 1 week but with 2 more league games this week we could see some changes. (Burlington has canceled this week’s game due to covid and Holyoke does not have an opponent).
Wray over Wiggins
Wiggins pulled off the most impressive win in Class 1A in week 1. Wiggins upset Bennett 21 to 6 and were led by there defense. Wray also had an impressive 43-14 win over traditional power Burlington. Wiggins was led by QB Cole Kerr who threw for 105 yards and ran for another 154 yards. My biggest takeaway from their win over Bennett was shutting down the rushing attack of Bennett. Wray was also led by their QB Tyler Collins who threw for 252 yards and ran for another 140 yards. Wray is not normally known as a passing team but found success. I am going with Wray over Wiggins in this game. Wray proved in week one that they are not just a running team and can throw the ball if needed and I think defensively will be tough on Wiggins offense. Wiggins defensively will prove to be a tough test for Wray, but I am going Wray in this game.
Limon over Highland
Limon was victorious in week 1 beating Yuma 40 to 0. Limon was powered by their rushing attack rushing for 335 yards and led by Kory Tacha. Highland fell in a slight upset to Holyoke 22 to 20. Highland took the early lead in the game, but Holyoke fought back for the upset victory. Highland did find success in a balanced attack passing for 154 yards and rushing for 166 yards. I am going Limon over Highland in a close game. Limon, I feel has to many offensive weapons for Highland to completely shut down. Limon is also battle tested defensively and will know how to handle a balanced offensive attack. I do think Highland may find some success on offense, but I do not think it will be enough to pull the upset.
League Standing Outcome
IF my predictions are correct you will have Limon and Wray sitting at 2-0 and Holyoke at 1-0. Wiggins, Burlington, and Yuma will be sitting at 0-1 and Highland will be sitting at 0-2. If Highland does not pull the upset out, they will probably have to run the table to have a shot at the playoffs. No teams are out of playoff contention even after this week’s games. I will that I will be interested to see what happens with Burlington going forward.
Playoff Contenders: Limon, Wray, Holyoke, Highland, Yuma, Wiggins, Burlington
Week 1 was not to kind to the SPL with only Centauri pulling off a victory in the first week. Only Centauri and Monte Vista even scored in the first week but moving into league play, things will get very interesting. 3 league games on tap and all are key going forward.
Centauri over Dolores
Centauri was the only team victorious in the SPL blasting Rocky Ford 54-7. Centauri was able to have success on offense with QB Mckay Russell throwing for 147 and RB Mason Claunch rushing for 130 yards. Dolores was beat in Week 1 falling to Hotchkiss 52-0. Dolores will look to improve their run defense heading into this week’s game. Centauri is my pick in this game. I think offensively Centauri will have to many weapons and if they get to the outside this will be a long game for Dolores.
Monte Vista over Del Norte
Both Monte Vista and Del Norte were defeated in week 1. Monte Vista fell to #3 C.S Christian 40 to 8 but fought to the end. Monte Vista figured stuff out on offense throwing for 124 yards and rushing for 96 yards. Monte Vista will have to improve on stopping the run. Del Norte fell to Cedaredge 33 to 0. Del Norte defensively played tough against Cedaredge but offensively struggle racking up just 68 yards of total offense. Look for Del Norte to try and get things going on offense this week. I am going with Monte Vista over Del Norte. Monte Vista in the second half started figuring things out and pushed C.S Christian for all 4 quarters.
Ignacio over Center
Ignacio did not play last week. Center fell in Week 1 to Peyton 26 to 0. Honestly this was not an easy pick and I went back and forth. Several times. I am going Ignacio over Center. Ignacio beat Center last year 38 to 21 and Ignacio lose just 6 seniors from last years team. I do think Center is improved this season and showed with the close loss to Peyton. I do not think this will be a high scoring game and I am going Ignacio over Center by 7. I could easily see this going the other way but my gut feeling is Ignacio this week.
League Standings Outcome
IF my picks are correct it will put Centauri, Monte Vista, and Ignacio all at 1-0 and atop the league standing. Centauri and Monte Vista don’t play each other till the end of the year. Monte Vista plays Ignacio on 11/6 and Centauri plays Ignacio on 10/30. The winner between Ignacio and Center keeps their playoffs hopes alive unless other upsets happen.
Playoff Contenders: Centauri, Monte Vista, Center, Ignacio
The Tri-Peaks League had a very success week 1 going 4-2 and setting the pace going forward. The Tri-Peaks League looks to be very competitive. One quick note before jumping in. Trinidad host forfeit their game to C.S Christian (Unless C.S Christian can find another game). 2 games on tap in the Tri-Peaks League this week.
Florence over Rocky Ford
Florence was victorious in week 1 beating Gunnison 32 to 8. Florence had a huge day running the ball rushing for 356 yards. Rocky Ford fell in week 1 to Centauri 54 to 7. Rocky Ford has a lot of younger players playing this season and look for them to gain valuable experience. I am going Florence in this game. Florence offensively have to many weapons and it shows with RB Owen Busetti and RB Jacob Kennedy. Florence will be tough to stop on offense.
Peyton over Rye
Both Peyton and Rye pulled out tough victories in week 1. Peyton beat Center 26 to 0 and were led by their rushing attack which pounded out 277 yards. Rye beat Paonia 13-0 and were led by their rushing attack which pounded out 184 yards. I am going Peyton over Rye. I think this will be a defensive game with neither team breaking the 30-point mark. I am going Peyton because of their rushing attack led by Brandon Hussey. I do think this will be a good game, but I think Peyton has enough to get by Rye.
League Standings Outcome
IF my predictions are correct C.S Christian, Florence, and Peyton will all sit atop the standing at 1-0. Just like the IML the winner between Peyton and Rye will have a shot at the playoffs unless another upset happens. Peyton plays Florence on 10/22 and C.S Christian on 11/13.
Playoff Contenders: C.S Christian, Florence, Peyton, Rye
Week 1 was very good to the Western Slope with them going 4-2. A full slate of games this week in the Western Slope with 3 league games and all very important towards the league standings.
Cedaredge over Olathe
Both Cedaredge and Olathe were victorious in week 1 and now look to move to 2-0 on the season. Cedaredge beat Del Norte in week 1 33-0. QB Jacob Brown had a solid game throwing for 136 yards and running for another 72 yards. Olathe beat Trinidad 48-0. Cedaredge is my pick in this game. Cedaredge is returning more offensive talent than Olathe. Cedaredge will be tested by Olathe and I think this should be a solid game.
Meeker over Gunnison
Meeker opened the 2020 season with a hard-fought win over Moffat County 36 to 14. Meeker was powered by their passing attack which racked up 248 yards. QB Ryan Phelan had a big game with 3 total TDs. Gunnison feel in their first varsity game in 2 years. Gunnison did have solid play from QB Nico Marchitelli who threw for 91 yards and ran for 150 yards. I am going Meeker in this game. Meeker is proven they are a top team in 1A especially with a tough win over Moffat County in week 1. QB Ryan Phelan is one of the top QBs in Class 1A and he will be the big difference maker in this game. Gunnison will take a few years to get back to be a big threat in Western Slope, but this is big experience for this team.
Hotchkiss over Paonia
Hotchkiss got their 2020 season off to a quick start scoring 38 points in the first quarter and cruising to the 52 to 0 victory over Dolores. Hotchkiss had a big day in the special team’s department returning 3 punts for TDs. Paonia fell in their week 1 game against Rye 13-0. Paonia will look to get their offense going this week. Paonia did play tough on defense and will have to bring it this week to slow this offense down. I am going Hotchkiss in this game. I think offensively Hotchkiss has to many weapons from QB Yahir Chavez to RB Adam Smith. I also think Hotchkiss defense is a top unit this year. Paonia best shot is keeping the game close and low scoring.
League Standings Outcome
IF my predictions are correct that will put Meeker, Cedaredge, and Hotchkiss at 1-0 and atop the standings. Still plenty to sort out in the Western Slope league but Meeker must be the early favorite to win the Western Slope with Hotchkiss right on their tail.
Playoff Contenders: Meeker, Cedaredge, Hotchkiss, Olathe
I think all league champions will get into the playoffs:
The 5 league champions will take 5 of the 8 spots and leave just 3 spots open for the wildcard spot. I think the North Central, Tri-Peaks, Foothills, Western Slope and possibly the IML second place teams will have a shot at the playoffs. I think you have to give the North Central (Wray) and Tri-Peaks (Florence) another team due to strength of league. That leaves one spot for either Bennett (Foothills), Hotchkiss (Western Slope), or Monte Vista (IML) a shot. I am leaning towards Hotchkiss but if Monte Vista runs the table besides Centauri and C.S Christian does run the table Monte Vista RPI will probably be higher than Hotchkiss RPI and Bennett RPI but plenty of things to get played out.
(These are not in order)
#4 C.S Christian
