Sedgwick County is the #1 overall seed and is looking for their 6th straight state title. Sedgwick County entered the playoffs with a 6-0 record and scoring over 40 points in all games but 1. Sedgwick County faced Crowley County in the Quarterfinals and won 45 to 12. In the semifinals Sedgwick County faced Dove Creek and took a 40 to 6 lead into halftime and cruised to the 46 to 6 win to get to the state championship. Sedgwick County can be balanced in their offensive attack but will look to establish the run. QB Jared Ehmke leads the passing attack and has over 500 yards passing on the season. The rushing attack has racked up over 2000 yards on the season. RB Kaleb Fowler leads the team in rushing with over 800 yards and RB Brody Parker is #2 in rushing with over 500 yards on the season. Defensively Sedgwick County is dominate allowing just 68 points on the season. Fabian Lopez, Tate Goddard, and Nolan Carlson lead the team in tackles. Fabian Lopez also leads the team in TFL and Sack. They will be looking for history if they can with their 6th straight title.
Sanford is the #2 overall seed and is making their first trip to the state championship in Football. Sanford entered the playoffs with a 5-0 record and broke 40-point mark in all but 1 game. Sanford as mentioned is making their first trip to the state championship. Sanford faced Mancos in the first round and Sanford was able to avoid a late comeback attempt to win 36 to 28. In the Semifinals Sanford faced Merino and a defensive struggle ensued. Sanford trailed at halftime 14 to 8 after Merino scored on an untimed down before halftime. Sanford though was able to get a defensive stop inside their 20 as the 3rd quarter was coming to an end. The Sanford offense then took over and had a couple big 3rd down conversions. QB Josh Holman then had the biggest play of the game taking a 51-yard run to the house and completing a two-point conversion to give Sanford a 16 to 14 lead. Sanford defense got another stop and were able to walk away with the tough win over Merino. Offensively Sanford is led by QB Josh Holman and RB Kelton Gartrell. Defensively Brett Price, Omar Guerrero, and Mason Goodwin lead the way for a tough Sanford defense.
This is a game between a team making their first appearance in the State Championship and a team making their 6th straight. Sanford will look to establish the run and must have success. Sanford must also take care of the ball and avoid big mistakes. Defensively Sanford will also look to stop the run and avoid the big strike of Sedgwick County. Sedgwick County offensively will also look to establish the run and will turn to both of their RBs to lead the way. Defensively Sedgwick County will look to stop the run as well and keep the big plays in check from Sanford. I am picking Sedgwick County in this game. I think their experience in the big game will make a big difference. I do think it will be a closer game and should be fun to watch.
