MileHigh Prep Report Class 2A Boys Basketball Preseason Rankings

My Top 14 Rankings for Class 2A.  Last year was an interesting year with a short year and no regional tournament.  This year things go back to normal with hopefully a full schedule and regionals, which always have a surprise or two.

Class 2A

RankTeamNotes
#1Wray

Defending State Champions
Wray had a great season last year, running the table and winning the State Championship.  Wray of course will have a few holes losing 2 of their top 5 scorers but returning POY candidate Bryant Schoenthal and key contributors Jaden Dodsworth and Andrew Trejo will make Wray a favorite to win Class 2A again.
#2Yuma

Made State Tournament (Went 2-1, lost in Final 4)
Yuma reached the final 4 last season falling to eventual state champions Wray by just 5 points.  Yuma lost just 1 senior from last year’s team and is looking for revenge.  Yuma is locked and loaded again this season with POY candidate Clay Robinson and #2 scorer Javier Gamboa back.
#3Mancos

Made State Tournament (Went 1-1, lost in Sweet 16)
Mancos reached the State Tournament last year but came up short in the Sweet 16 losing to Sedgwick County.  Mancos is looking to reload and make a big run.  Mancos returns 4 of their top 5 scorers including POY candidate Connor Showalter.  Mancos also returns top contributors Evan Sehnert and Kail Wayman plus a key transfer in Mason Goodwin.
#4Denver Christian

Made State Tournament (Went 1-1, lost in Elite 8)
Denver Christian reached the Elite 8 last season before falling to Peyton.  Denver Christian will look for another return trip to the Elite 8 this season.  Denver Christian will have some holes to fill losing their #2 and #3 scorers.  Leading scorer and POY candidate Ben Buhler is back and leading contributor Xander Neu must step up this season for Denver Christian.
#5Limon

Runner Up
Limon was your runner up a season ago falling to Wray in the State Championship in OT.  Limon will have some key players to replace losing their top 3 scorers and over 40 ppg.  Limon though will still be very tough returning key guards in Brady Rockwell and Trey Hines.  The Front Court will still have some size with Kaden Becker back as well.
#6Peyton

Made State Tournament (Went 2-1, lost in Final 4)
Peyton reached the final 4 last season before falling to Limon.  Peyton will once again look for a deep run and have the core of last years team back to do so.  Peyton will return 4 of their top 6 scorers including leading scorer Gibson Gellerman.  AJ Lashley will be poised for a bigger role as Peyton will look to replace their #2 and #3 scorers.
#7Crested Butte

Made State Tournament (Lost in First Round)
Crested Butte made the state tournament last year falling in the first round by 3 to Ignacio.  Crested Butte gained valuable experience and I expect a big run this season.  Leading scorer Erik Wasinger and #2 scorer Alan Prieto return to lead the offensive attack.  Crested Butte defensively is also very tough and will make for a long night.
#8Holly

Made State Tournament (Lost in sweet 16)
Holly made the state tournament last year before being upset in the Sweet 16 by Wiggins.  Holly will look for a deeper run this season and turn to leading score Josue Avalos and #2 scorer Dakota Eaton to lead this team.  Depth is my biggest concern for Holly this season.
#9Sanford

Made State Tournament (Lost in Sweet 16)
Sanford made the state tournament last year.  Sanford was upset in the Sweet 16 losing to Ignacio.  Sanford had some inexperience but return a solid core for this season.  Kelton Gartrell, Cash Caldon, and Ethan Larsen all look to step up and be leaders for Sanford this season.
#10Vail Christian

Made State Tournament (Lost in First Round)
Vail Christian reached the state tournament last year.  Vail Christian fell in the first round to Wiggins.  Vail Christian returns their entire roster from last season and the state tournament experience was key.  Vail Christian will look to Leo Rothenberg and Connor Downey to lead the offense and try to get them into the State Tournament.
#11Ignacio

Made State Tournament (Went 2-1, lost in Elite 8)
Ignacio made the state tournament and reached the Elite 8 before running into Limon.  Ignacio will look to that experience to try and make it to the Elite 8 again.  Ignacio will have key holes to fill but look for POY candidate Gabe Tucson to lead an always potent offensive attack from Ignacio.
#12Holyoke

Made State Tournament (Lost in First Round)
Holyoke made the State Tournament last year but fell in the first round to Meeker.  Holyoke will return nearly their entire roster including top 3 scorer Wyatt Sprague, Ethan Johnson, and Miles Sprague.  Holyoke could be a team to watch make a run for the State Tournament.
#13Byers

Did not Make State Tournament
Byers did not make the State Tournament last season but had success going 8-6.  Byers could be a very underrated team this season.  Byers returns their top 5 scorers including Zach Cary and Wyatt Harris.  Byers could make some noise this season and shock a team or two to get into the State Tournament.
#14Wiggins

Made State Tournament (Went 2-1, lost in Elite 8)
Wiggins reached the state tournament last year and upset the #5 seeded Holly to reach the Elite 8.  Wiggins will lose 3 key seniors from that team but return at least 2 of their top 5 scorers and this team could take a big step this season.  With no stats it’s tough to tell what Wiggins will return.
Teams to Watch for:Plateau Valley, Calhan, Rye, Lyons, Dawson School, Meeker, Olathe, Center, Lake County
