Class 1A Girls Basketball District Predictions Week 7
I will give a much quicker run down for Class 1A Girls. Next week I plan on diving more in depth. I will be using the Districts from the CHSAA bulletin which is how team will qualify for regionals. I also see they have reverted to 2019 rules to qualify for regionals and state. I will post that below.
How to Qualify for Regionals and State
8 District each qualify 2 or 3 teams to three regionals. The three regionals are posted below
|Region 1||Region 2||Region 3|
|District 1 & 8||District 4, 5, 7||District 2, 3, 6|
The #1 and #2 seeds from Districts 1 and 8 will be paired, while the #1, #2, and #3 seeds from Districts 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 will advance to a regional site. In Region 2 (4,5,7) and Region 3 (2, 3, 6), the nine qualify teams will be seeded by RPI avoiding any previous district matchups. In Region 1, District 1 and 8 #1s will play each other districts #2. Region 1 receives 2 state qualifiers, Region 2 & 3 receive three state qualifiers each.
After the Final 8 teams have been determined the teams will be re-seeded base on the following: The eight regional winners advance to the state tournament where they will be seeded by seeding criteria approved in a committee, made up of administrative representatives. The committee may use the following criteria to seed the final pairings: final RPI, previous district matchup’s, head-to-head competition, and common opponents.
A consolation bracket will be played in the Great 8.
District 1 (Just 2 teams Qualify for Regionals)
1. Dove Creek
2. North Park
4. Caprock Academy
5. De Beque
Not a ton of changes this week for District 1. Dove Creek and North Park are still the two teams I think qualify for regionals. Nucla and Caprock Academy look to be the main contenders for one of those two spots as well. Dove Creek would face the #2 team from District 8 and North Park would face the #1 team from District 8.
My predictions for District 1
League Champion: Dove Creek
Regional Qualifiers: Dove Creek & North Park
2. Cheyenne Wells
3. Kit Carson
District 2 gets 3 team into regionals and will compete against District 3 & 6 at Regionals. We do have some major changes since my last update to my District Predictions. McClave stays as my pick to win the District that has not changed. I have moved Cheyenne Wells into the #2 spot after a great start to 2022 including wins over Kit Carson and Springfield. Kit Carson slides into the #3 spot. Kit Carson did pick up a win over Wiley who I have sitting at #4. Wiley and Cheraw seem to be the main threats to stealing the #3 spot.
My predictions for District 2
League Champion: McClave
Regional Qualifiers: McClave, Cheyenne Wells, Kit Carson
3. South Baca
4. La Veta
District 3 will get 3 teams into regionals and will compete against District 2 & District 6. District 3 could be very top heavy with the top 3 teams somewhat pulling away. Springfield stays as my pick to win the District 3 Tournament. Kim/Branson stays as my pick to finish in second and South Baca stays as my pick to finish in 3rd. I don’t really see another team in this District pushing one of these top 3 teams. The order I think is what will needed to be figured out.
My predictions for District 3
League Champion: Springfield
Regional Qualifiers: Springfield, Kim/Branson, South Baca
7. Weldon Valley
District 4 will get 3 teams into regionals. District 4 will compete against District 5 & 7 at Regionals. District 4 will be one of the toughest leagues this season and the battle for the top 3 should be very interesting. Briggsdale stays as my pick to win the District 4 tournament. Fleming also stays as my pick to finish in second and when these two teams meet should be a great battle. Merino moves into the #3 spot. Merino has the head-to-head over Haxtun currently by 1 and if these two teams meet to decide who goes to regionals will be a great game. Caliche I think is a dark horse to push for one of the final 3 spots. Caliche is very young featuring mostly sophomores and I think this is a team to watch for as we go deeper into their careers.
My predictions for District 4
League Champion: Briggsdale
Regional Qualifiers: Briggsdale, Fleming, Merino
1. Lone Star
9. Deer Trail
District 5 gets 3 teams into regionals and will compete against District 4 & 7 at regionals. Lone Star stays as my pick to win the District 5 tournament. Stratton holds onto the #2 spot. Stratton did take some licks this past week losing to both Briggsdale and Fleming by the same score of 54-36. Idalia holds onto the #3 spot and I think have secured it a bit more. Idalia upset 2A Wray this past week. I think that wins really shows the top 3 teams in this District will be very tough and I am not sure if another team can push into the top 3. Arickaree/Woodlin and Genoa-Hugo are the only 2 teams I think could push into the top 3. Of course that could all change with a month left in the season.
My predictions for District 5
League Champion: Lone Star
Regional Qualifiers: Lone Star, Stratton, Idalia
1. Sangre De Cristo
3. Sierra Grande
7. Lake City
District 6 will get 3 teams into regionals and will compete with District 2 & 3 at regionals. Sangre De Cristo stays as my pick to win District 6. Sangre De Cristo seems to be head and shoulders above the rest of the District currently. Sangre De Cristo beat Cotopaxi 46-14 but if they meet later, it’s always tough to replicate the same results. Cotopaxi stays as my pick to finish in second. Cotopaxi the past 3 games have struggled to score but should break that this week. The #3 spot is the most contested. For now I am sticking with Sierra Grande but Centennial is right on their tails. The battle for the final spot should be a good one between Sierra Grande and Centennial.
My predictions for District 6
League Champion: Sangre De Cristo
Regional Qualifiers: Sangre De Cristo, Cotopaxi, Sierra Grande
4. Evangelical Christian
7. Pikes Peak Christian
8. Cripple Creek
District 7 will get 3 teams into regionals and will compete against District 4 and 5 at Regionals. Kiowa stays as my pick to win the District 7 tournament. Kiowa has only played 5 games but a 62-57 win over Elbert last night should lock up at least a top 2 seed at Districts. Simla stays as my #2 team. Simla has started 2022 off well winning all 3 games including an OT win over Byers. Elbert holds onto my #3 spot. Elbert played well against Kiowa but fell just short. Elbert will still have a shot against Simla later in the year. ECA is a team I think could challenge for a top 3 spot. ECA blowout win over Cotopaxi and playing tough against Flatirons Academy will make them a tough out.
My predictions for District 7
League Champion: Kiowa
Regional Qualifiers: Kiowa, Simla, Elbert
District 8 (Only 2 teams get to Regionals)
1. Flatirons Academy
2. Belleview Christian
3. Rocky Mountain Lutheran
4. Front Range Baptist
5. Denver Waldorf
6. Denver Jewish Day
7. Mile High Academy
8. Beth Eden
District 8 gets just 2 teams into Regionals and will face District 1 at Regionals. District 8 has been tough to evaluate early on with teams playing non CHSAA schools or playing non-quality opponents. Flatirons Academy is the clear-cut favorite to win District 8. Belleview Christian stays as my pick to finish in second in District 8. The main change is who moves into the #3 and #4 spots. Rocky Mountain Lutheran looks to be a challenger for a top 2 spot and same goes to Front Range Baptist.
My predictions for District 8
League Champion: Flatirons Academy
Regional Qualifiers: Flatirons Academy, Belleview Christian
