Class 2A Girls Basketball District Predictions Week 8

We have about a month left of the regular season and for some teams we will see them jam a lot of games in before the district tournament.  Still, plenty to figure out as we head toward District Tournaments.  Seeding will be key in most district tournament to try and push for an automatic berth.  Here is a quick reminder of how-to quality for Regionals; Each District qualifies 3 teams to regionals, with the remaining 8 teams determined by the next highest RPI scores.

District 1

1. Sanford

2. Sargent

3. Monte Vista

4. Center

5. Del Norte

6. Custer County

7. South Park

8. Crested Butte

9. Trinidad

10. Lake County

Sanford stays as my team to win the District 1 tournament.  Sanford continues to play well and a tight game against 1A Sangre De Cristo could be what they need to push them forward.  Sanford this week face Custer County who has some question marks into how they will compete inside District 1.  Sanford must still face Sargent, Center, and Del Norte before they can lock up a top seed in the District Tournament.  Sargent holds onto the #2 spot.  Sargent has been dealing with a bit of injury issues but have pushed thru winning 3 straight games in 2022.  Things do start to get tougher for Sargent this week as they face Center on Thursday and Ignacio on Saturday.  Sargent will have a jam-packed February and some big games upcoming for this team.  I am leaving Monte Vista in the #3 spot this week.  Monte Vista did lose to Center by 3 in Center, but this was the non-league game.  Monte Vista then played Pagosa Springs tough last night losing by just 7.  Monte Vista will face Custer County on 2/4 then Center on 2/5 and these two games could change where I have Monte Vista finish in the District.  Center I have in the #4 spot.  Center picked up the important non-league win over Monte Vista, but they still have to face them against plus their league loss to Del Norte could push them into the #5 spot if they fall to Monte Vista later.  Center does face Sargent on Thursday and if they can upset Sargent, they will jump into the top 3.  I have Del Norte in the #5 spot.  Del Norte has won 2 straight games including the league win over Center on 1/11.  Del Norte will face Trinidad on Friday before a huge clash with Custer County Saturday.  I think for Del Norte to push for an at-large regional berth they must win their next 4 games before a very difficult stretch of games to end the season.  Custer County stays in the #6 spot.  Custer County has some question marks due to their weak schedule and their margin of victories being low.  Custer County will take a first chance at proving my wrong on Friday when they host Sanford then Del Norte on Saturday.  I think we will learn how much of a contender Custer County is after this weekend.

My predictions for District 1

League Champion: Sanford

Regional Automatic Qualifiers: Sanford, Sargent, Monte Vista

Regional Contenders: Del Norte, Center, Custer County

District 2

1. Sedgwick County

2. Holyoke

3. Akron

4. Yuma

5. Wray

6. Wiggins

7. Burlington

District 2 will be a battle this season and all 7 team are competitive teams.  Honestly this District Tournament could be won by a team that gets hot at the right moment.  Sedgwick County is my pick to win the District 2 tournament, but huge games remain for Sedgwick County against Holyoke (1/28), Wray (2/10), Yuma (2/15), and Akron (2/18).  Sedgwick County have a warmup game against Perkins County on Thursday before their clash with Holyoke on Friday night at home.  Holyoke has won 9 straight games including a league win over Wray two weeks ago.  Holyoke did pick up a big non-league win over Limon last Saturday and I know Holyoke is looking for revenge when they face Sedgwick County Friday.  This will probably be one of the biggest games in the State of Colorado.  Akron moves into the #3 spot.  Akron has played well as of late including a win over Yuma and Highland (3A).  Akron takes aim at top 1A teams this week when they host Fleming and travel to face Rival Merino.  Akron moves back into league play on 2/3 when they face Burlington.  Akron still has a difficult schedule remaining.  Yuma holds onto the #4 spot.  Yuma picked up a very solid 66-53 over Wray and should help push them for a top 5 seed in the District Tournament.  Yuma face Wiggins this Friday and this should be a great game as well.  Yuma still gets another crack at Holyoke and Sedgwick County later in the year.  Wray falls into the #5 spot, but I fully believe could still challenge for a top 3 spot.  Wray has hit a bit of a slide losing 3 straight games to Holyoke, Idalia (1A), and Yuma.  None are bad losses, but Wray needs to break the slide.  Wray will face Limon this Friday before face Haxtun next week.  Wray is still in very good position to make regionals as an at-large team.  Wiggins slides into the #6 spot but are also in very good position for an at-large berth.  Wiggins fell to Sedgwick County by just 9 last Friday and look to be a threat for most teams.  Wiggins takes a shot at Yuma this Friday but looking farther they face Akron, Holyoke, and Wray in three straight games in February.  Burlington, I think still have a slight shot a regionals as well.  Burlington needs some key wins, and they have a shot this Thursday against Stratton.  Burlington will need a solid showing to end the year to get to regionals but they have a schedule that could provide an upset opportunity.

My predictions for District 2

League Champion: Sedgwick County

Regional Automatic Qualifiers: Sedgwick County, Holyoke, Akron

Regional Contenders: Yuma, Wray, Wiggins, Burlington

District 3

1. Cedaredge

2. Ignacio

3. Mancos

4. Olathe

5. Dolores

6. Ridgway

7. Telluride

Cedaredge stays as my pick to win the District 3 tournament.  Cedaredge is 9-3 currently with their latest loss coming to Soroco by 1.  Cedaredge won’t play another District opponent till the tournament but will be positioned well with their RPI.  Ignacio stays in the #2 spot.  Ignacio win over Mancos earlier in January will be key heading towards February.  Ignacio must face Mancos against on 2/1 and that will be for a top 2 seed in the District Tournament.  Mancos is 4-4 currently and have not played a game since 1/11.  Mancos is schedule to face Grand County UT on 1/27 then Dove Creek on 1/28.  I expect a lot of games to be played for Mancos in the month of February.  Olathe is the last team to mention as regional contenders.  Olathe is 4-7 currently but they did pick up a key win over Rangely last Saturday.  If Olathe can string some wins together down the stretch, they should keep their at-large regional berths alive.

My predictions for District 3

League Champion: Cedaredge

Regional Automatic Qualifiers: Cedaredge, Ignacio, Mancos

Regional Contenders: Olathe

District 4

1. Limon

2. Denver Christian

3. Front Range Christian

4. Lotus School

5. Byers

6. Platte Canyon

7. Addenbrooke Classical

8. Clear Creek

9. Golden View Classical

Limon remains as my team to win the District 4 tournament.  Limon is 9-2 currently with quality losses to Holyoke and Eaton.  Limon will look to bounce back when they face 1A Simla tonight.  Limon has a tough schedule to end the year with key games against Wray, Merino, Stratton, Byers, Fowler, and Kit Carson on their schedule.  Denver Christian is my pick to finish in second place.  Denver Christian has played well this year but still have some key games on their schedule.  Denver Christian has a big game this Thursday against Dayspring Christian.  Denver Christian must also face Clear Creek and Byers from within this District.  Denver Christian did beat Front Range Christian last week but lost to Limon as well.  Front Range Christian holds the #3 spot this week.  Front Range Christian holds this spot despite losing 4 straight games.  I am keeping them in the #3 spot because of their head to head win over Lotus School back in December.  FRC has some key games upcoming against District opponents Clear Creek and Byers.  Lotus School holds onto the #4 spot.  Lotus School is still somewhat of a mystery because of their schedule.  Lotus School currently is an at-large berth contender for regionals.  Lotus School best win is over Platte Canyon, and I really don’t see them being challenge the rest of the way till the District Tournament.  Byers moves into the #5 spot, and I think a contender for an at-large berth to regionals.  Byers is on a 4 game winning streak and put themselves back in good position to reach regionals.  Byers does have a big 4 game stretch coming against Burlington (big matchup), Stratton, Kiowa, and Denver Christian.  Byers could see themselves fall out of contention or strength their position.  Platte Canyon is the last team I want to mention.  Platte Canyon is 6-5 and they should be able to snag wins in the 3A Frontier League.  Platte Canyon must avoid the bad losses and should be in position to contend for an at-large berth but they must win the games they are favored in league play.

My predictions for District 4

League Champion: Limon

Regional Automatic Qualifiers: Limon, Denver Christian, Front Range Christian

Regional Contenders: Lotus School, Byers, Platte Canyon

District 5

1. Soroco

2. West Grand

3. Meeker

4. Rangely

5. Plateau Valley

6. Hayden

7. Vail Christian

Soroco stays as my pick to win the District 5 tournament.  Soroco is currently 12-1 and have been on a roll since their loss.  Soroco is in position to get the #1 seed in the District tournament but a key games against West Grand & Plateau Valley.  If Soroco wins both they will be the #1 seed.  Meeker moves into the #2 spot.  Meeker is currently 5-5 but they have played a difficult schedule.  Meeker will face Rangely this Thursday and will determine if they can hold onto the #2 spot.  Meeker still must face the majority of the league so they can still go up and down with seeding.  West Grand falls into the #3 spot.  West Grand is 7-4 currently and they face Cedaredge on Friday.  West Grand must still face Soroco, Plateau Valley, Hayden and Meeker so still a lot to figure out for West Grand.  Most of this league is still up for grabs as well with minimal games being played.  Hayden, Rangely, and Plateau Valley have also played minimal league games and I think plenty still to be figured out.  I do think all 3 teams are in contention for regionals, but I think this weekend could help sort some of this out.  I will dive more in-depth on district 5 next week.

My predictions for District 5

League Champion: Soroco

Regional Automatic Qualifiers: Soroco, West Grand, Meeker

Regional Contenders: Rangely, Plateau Valley, Hayden

District 6

1. Rye

2. Hoehne

3. Fowler

4. Swink

5. Rocky Ford

6. Holly

7. Las Animas

8. Crowley County

9. Swallows Charter

10. John Mall

Rye stays as my pick to win the District 6 tournament.  Rye is undefeated still and they have cruised so far in 2022.  Rye will face Swink this Thursday and could be a test for Rye.  The dates to watch for Rye will be on 2/1 against Hoehne, 2/4 against Fowler, and 2/8 against Hoehne again.   Hoehne sits in the #2 spot.  Hoehne is 11-1 but they were challenged by Swink but won by 7.  Hoehne has cruised in their previous two games beating Crowley County and Holly easily.  Hoehne face Swallows Charter this Thursday before a key test against Fowler on Friday.  Fowler stays in the #3 spot.  Fowler beat Rocky Ford on 1/15 but have not played since.  Fowler gets back into action against Hoehne on Friday and should be a great game.  Swink stays in the #4 spot but they have played minimal games in 2022.  Swink did get back into action with a 45-20 win over Swallows Charter last night.  Swink will face Rye this Thursday and will be a test if Swink can push for a top 3 spot.  Rocky Ford, Holly, and Las Animas are all 3 teams who could be in contention for a at-large berth to regionals but key games this weekend could really limit who make it.  I will be watching for results and expect a much bigger dive into District 6 next week.

My predictions for District 6

League Champion: Rye

Regional Qualifiers: Rye, Hoehne, Fowler

Regional Contenders: Swink, Rocky Ford, Holly, Las Animas

District 7

1. Heritage Christian

2. Dayspring Christian

3. Gilpin County

4. Dawson School

5. Union Colony Prep

6. Twin Peaks Charter

7. Loveland Classical

8. Lyons

9. Poudre Community Academy

Heritage Christian stays as my pick to win the District 7 tournament.  Heritage Christian is currently 8-2 and they picked up a key win over Union Colony Prep last night.  Heritage Christian still must face key competition down the stretch.  Heritage Christian must face Gilpin County and Dayspring Christian within the District plus some key non-district games remain as well.  Dayspring Christian stays in the #2 spot.  Dayspring Christian beat UCP and Front Range Christian last week which are key wins within the league.  Dayspring Christian still must face Heritage Christian and could be for the #1 or #2 seed.  Gilpin County is 9-4 currently and solid wins over Clear Creek and Lyons help stay in that spot.  Gilpin County still must face Heritage Christian and Dawson School both could change them between a #2 thru #4 seed in the District tournament.  Dawson School sits in the #4 spot and in position to reach regionals as an at-large berth.  Dawson School is 7-5 currently but a very difficult schedule awaits to end the year.  Dawson School will face Dayspring Christian on Monday next week.  Dawson School still must face Highland, Gilpin County, and Denver Christian.  Union Colony Prep is one last school to mention.  UCP is 4-7 and on the verge of being out of contention for regionals as an at-large team.  UCP needs a solid run down the stretch to get them back in conversation.  UCP has winnable games against Windsor Charter, Prairie, Front Range Christian, and Lyons and need at least 3 of the 4 to have a shot at regionals.

My predictions for District 7

League Champion: Heritage Christian

Regional Qualifiers: Heritage Christian, Dayspring Christian, Gilpin County

Regional Contenders: Dawson School, Union Colony Prep

District 8

1. Peyton

2. Fountain Valley

3. Dolores Huerta

4. Colorado Springs School

5. Calhan

6. Thomas MacLaren

7. Atlas Prep

Peyton is my pick to win the District 8 tournament.  Peyton is currently 6-5 and they have played well in 2022 winning all 3 games.  Peyton will see an uptick in their schedule.  Peyton will have a non-league game against Yuma before facing Calhan and Thomas MacLaren next week.  The date to watch is 2/9 when they face Fountain Valley.  Fountain Valley stays as my pick to finish in second.  Fountain Valley is 6-0 but lack quality wins.  Fountain Valley did beat Colorado Springs School and Thomas MacLaren.  Fountain Valley will see their schedule get tougher starting 1/29 when they host Elbert.  Fountain Valley February schedule is much tougher and we will learn about Fountain Valley as the season progresses.  Dolores Huerta is my pick to finish 3rd.  Dolores Huerta is 5-7 but they own wins over Thomas MacLaren and Colorado Springs School.  Dolores Huerta still must face Fountain Valley and Calhan but I think finishing 3rd is a solid spot for them.  District 8 I don’t think get another team into regionals besides their 3 automatic berths.

My predictions for District 8

League Champion: Peyton

Regional Qualifiers: Peyton, Fountain Valley, Dolores Huerta

Regional Contenders: None
