Class 1A Girls Basketball State Tournament Predictions
We have reached the end of the road and for 8 teams it’s time to compete for the State Championship. Some great matchups in the first round and looking forward. I am going to give my prediction for the Great 8 and then I will move forward from there. I will try and give an update after each day during the State Tournament. Also, we will be at the 1A State Tournament till around 3:30pm when we must head back to 2A for the rest of the evening. Looking forward to watching the earlier games in 1A.
Great 8
#1 Briggsdale over #8 Lone Star
This is a rematch from February with Briggsdale getting the 19-point win. I don’t expect that big of a spread this time around as both teams will be coming into the matchup with momentum. Lone Star is the Cinderella team after upsetting Merino in the regional finals. Lone Star has proven they can upset top teams. Briggsdale will look to avoid the upset and must play their style to move into the semifinals. I am going with Briggsdale into the Final 4.
#5 Sangre De Cristo over #4 Fleming
My pick for best game of the Great 8 in 1A Girls. I have flipped back and forth on this pick and these two teams are very familiar with each other. Sangre De Cristo and Fleming meet last year in the Great 8 with Fleming getting the 7 point win. I expect another great game and both teams have the scorers and talent to push each other. This I think comes down to the wire and I am going with Sangre De Cristo over Fleming.
#3 McClave over #6 Dove Creek
Another great matchup in the Great 8. These two teams know each other from last season. Dove Creek was able to get the 20-point win over McClave in the sweet 16. These two teams have a few changes from last season, and this is on a neutral court this year. I think this game comes down to the wire and I could easily see Dove Creek pull the upset. Defense will be key in this game.
#2 Flatirons Academy over #7 Cheyenne Wells
Cheyenne Wells had a great season this year and reached the state tournament for the first time in a while. They will face off against the defending state champions right off the bat. Flatirons Academy will have the experience and I think that proves to be the difference in this game.
Final 4
#1 Briggsdale over #5 Sangre De Cristo
Briggsdale looks to get over the hump and reach the state championship. Either matchup with Sangre De Cristo or Fleming will prove to be difficult. Sangre De Cristo does have the weapons to matchup with Briggsdale but comes down to scoring if they face Briggsdale.
#2 Flatirons Academy over #3 McClave
This would be a great matchup, but I think Flatirons Academy experience yet again proves to be the difference. I also feel that Flatirons Academy offensively has the weapons to beat the stingy defense of McClave.
Consolation Semifinal
#4 Fleming over #8 Lone Star
This would be a great matchup regardless of where they meet. Both teams will be bouncing back and it comes down to who shows up and wants it more early in the AM.
#6 Dove Creek over #7 Cheyenne Wells
Both teams are fighting for a shot at bringing home hardware for their girls’ program. Expect this matchup again next year but Dove Creek has the experience and gets the win.
